Enjoyable Romp

Warning: Spoilers
I was fortunate to see the new Dungeons and Dragons film the other week as part of a secret screening.

Sure it was incredibly cheesy (bordering on childish at times) but so what?

It is very much a light hearted adventure, with a few laugh out loud moments, in particular the bit with the bard distraction. Sometimes it tried a bit too hard to be funny.

The characters were somewhat flat, with Chris Pine's Edgin and Michelle Rodriguez's Holga being the only ones with a bit of depth. I guess probably because their backstory drove the whole film, but it did make it difficult to care about some of the other characters. With the exception of Forge who was played superbly by Hugh Grant.

Look, the film was never going to be an Oscar worthy masterpiece, with plot twists and intrigue at every corner. What it is, what it could only ever have been, is a 2 hour long jaunt through the fantasy genre. That's all I expected from it, and it duly delivered.

A solid 7/10 for me.
