Review of Doula

Doula (I) (2022)
3/10
Fine to have on in the background, but nothing special

Warning: Spoilers
I loved PLL when I was a teenager, so I figured it was worth a watch because I like Troian Bellisario. But I was disappointed. The plot was fine, but the dialogue was pretty cringey. I actually laughed out loud when Deb says 'ball is life.' Deb's whole character felt forced. I hated Silvio, which we are supposed to. But more of a, 'I want to fast-forward every time he's onscreen' rather than 'he's a believable antagonist.' And the weird alien music they'd play every time they'd do the belly perspective transitions between scenes drove me nuts. Humor fell flat on most occasions. I wouldn't watch it again. The only redeeming factors for me were that it featured some honest conversations about fear and the power struggle that many women face when they are pregnant, that some of them have very little agency because other people in their lives (partners, medical providers, family) think they have the right to pressure them into decisions they don't want to make.
