To heck with the plot. The performances are where it's at.

As sci-fi goes, this is far more fiction than science. The two main characters, Mike (Stockwell) and Vince (Stevens) play ride-or-die friends whose personalities balance each other out in the Kirk and Spock sense, where one is way over the top and the other mostly reserved. Stevens' near caricature of a performance never gets old for me, being the standout of the film. His pop culture references as a high school kid who clearly watches too much TV, and creative slang used to substitute for foul language ("It's god-funking-zilla") is a treat. Hopper is crazy as ever, in the best of ways. The supporting roles are well filled, especially by Raphael Sbarge as the mega-nerd. The film also comes complete with characters you love to hate. Don't watch it for the plot, but for the nuttiness, absurd situations and again, performances.
