Review of Get Real

Get Real (1999–2000)
4/10
Hated it then, still hate it now.

It had everything for me to love. It was a late 90s drama, with up and coming actors, and two supporting roles from Friends. And if it wasn't for the annoying theme song (why the gospel choir?...), a great song selection, on each episodes. But the characters were so painfully stereotypical, I still can't believe how the network green lit a series order, after that mediocre and self indulgent pilot episode. Not only did they fail at not being this and that. But it was so cheap, if felt like they just settled for the unaired version, without improving the bad camerawork. Like I said, the characters were obnoxious and cliché. The « aging » father in a midlife crisis, obviously. The neurotic mother, and « modern » grandmother. And their kids, including the irritating and self absorbed youngster. Played by Jesse Eisenberg... The dumb jock, portrayed by an actor I never liked, Eric Christian Olsen. And a Julia Salinger clone, played by a young Anne Hathaway, channeling her inner Joey Potter. Which is ironic, because her character, Meghan, was making fun of Dawson's Creek, during her introduction in the pilot episode. Just like any other shows of that time, it has a bundle of future stars in tiny roles, including January Jones, Peter Hermann, Aaron Paul, Ellen Pompeo and Taryn Manning... All in all, I'm giving « Get Real » the benefit of the doubt, for some of the cast members, episodes and music. But I've always hated this expression (« get real! » ugh...) and the show itself was trying too hard to be witty. When it was just the same, as any other like-minded « self aware » family drama. And was canceled when things were finally going somewhere.
