A film filled with great actors, lovely cinematography and music etc. I think the main reason people are underscoring it is that they don't understand the myriad references to the play itself and the many meta moments within the film. The lines are witty and are easy to miss. Yes some of the plot points are slightly simplistic but the point is to entertain, not to reinvent the genre. I thought it was a nice addition to the play, so if you've had the luck of watching the original, I'm sure you'll enjoy this film. Of course it also stands by itself and can be enjoyed by all the family, as the peril is only mild!
