The rom-com we've been waiting for!
23 December 2023
Anyone But You is the rom-com we've been waiting for! Mixing a modern retelling of Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing" with solid laughs and some undeniable chemistry between Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney, this movie has just about everything you could want from a great rom-com! Yeah, sure, we've seen it all before, but I thoroughly enjoyed this movie! It's just comfortable in a way. Yes, I knew what was going to happen and how the story would play out, but I was just so happy to be getting a rom-com on the big screen again! Feels like a miracle that a movie like this is even allowed to exist theatrically in this day and age. They don't make 'em like this anymore! Honestly, we could use more theatrical calibre comedies of this variety: ones that understand their low stakes, play into the strengths of their charismatic leads, and, perhaps most importantly, remember to have fun. It truly feels like a warm and witty love letter to the silly studio rom-coms of the 2000s (and that is not a bad thing), and it's cleverly directed by Will Gluck who made the fantastic movies Easy A and Friends With Benefits. Frankly, I just loved it and had such a good time watching it. What sets this apart is its witty dialogue, clever humor, and the charming performances of its lead actors. Sweeney and Powell navigate their roles with ease, bringing a modern sensibility to the age-old tale of love and misunderstanding. The film successfully blends humour and romance, creating a delightful journey that resonates with both fans of classic literature and those seeking a contemporary love story. For those who have longed for a standout American rom-com, Anyone But You is a satisfying treat that proves the genre can evolve and captivate audiences anew. This film marks a triumphant return to the heartwarming and entertaining spirit of romantic comedies, making it a must-watch for anyone seeking a delightful cinematic experience. Yes, it is cheesy and predictable, but goddamn is it charming, with laughs a minute and tremendously watchable stars! (It really is Powell and Sweeney's natural chemistry and banter that made this so engaging and charming.) It's just fun and utterly enjoyable - the more I think about it, the more I like it!
