Review of Hi Nanna

Hi Nanna (2023)
3/10
A lot of convinient

This movie, being a "Nanna" movie, should not be immune to normal criticisms that other movies face. I want to judge this movie based on its cinematic quality and storytelling prowess, which disappointed me. The story is something we have seen multiple times (compare this movie to Chiranjeevi's 'Daddy'), but what bothered me most is the number of "convenient coincidences" this movie has, such as Mahi meeting Varsha just when she wanted to know about her mother, Varsha getting married right after meeting Mahi and hearing her story, Varsha asking her to imagine being her mother, and she is her actual mother, Varsha losing her memory just after she regretted her decision and only forgetting until before her marriage with Viraj, Varsha's fiancé being a "specialist" doctor, the hospital not having good equipment to treat Mahi (come on......), and so on. Apart from this, the story is a mix of these and heavy melodrama, which is not different from the melodrama that you have seen hundreds of times before. The melodrama itself is not a bad thing, but how it is told is very basic and clichéd.

When it comes to directing and cinematography, they are very uninspiring and rudimentary. The music itself might not be bad, but how it is used in the movie is very cheap. I don't want the music to tell me how to feel in any scene, it shows the lack of depth the writing has, and this movie is scored 90% of its length. Mrunal's choice of scripts and her acting skills differentiate her from her peers, but the movie let her down.
