Tanner Hall (2009)

Lacking coming of age drama

Tanner Hall is a coming of age drama about four teenage girls. In an all-girl boarding school. Each of them has some issues to deal with (Fernanda falls for Gio, the husband of her mother's best friend, Kate sexually teases a professor, Mr. Middlewood, which is supposed to be a joke until it isn't, Lucasta is questioning her sexuality and finally Victoria, a deeply traumatised individual with a completely broken, almost irreparable psyche).

None of that sounds particularly original, but there was some potential and it could have become interesting. However, the characters are never developed to a level where the audience will care or root for them.

It's even worse with the side characters, not to mention that some parts of the plot are either stupid (for example Mr. Middlewood going to the bathroom to help Kate) or too convenient (for example Gio taking Fernanda out whenever he feels like without anyone noticing or suspecting anything).

The ending also leaves a lot to be desired. After introducing so many subplots, the movie rushes to the finishing line with many unanswered questions and no proper climax.

On the other hand, Tanner Hall's biggest asset lies in how good looking it is, in no small part thanks to the beautiful landscapes.
