Bramayugam (2024) : Brief Review -

Horror folklore stretched wide; Mamootty and Arjun Ashokan saved it from breaking off. One can actually argue over the point that Bramayugam is Malayalam cinema's attempt to modify the Bollywood masterpiece Tumbbad. Human greed plays a common part in both, while the rest of the things are totally different except for the theme of the mystical and horror worlds. Bramayugam differs in the source material, storytelling, and the main conflict. The main conflict here is the curse, a powerful character that keeps others in control. After his friend is killed by Yakshi, Thevan runs away and gets shelter in an abandoned mansion owned by Potti. Thevan is attracted by Potti's generosity, but little does he know that he is not what he looks like. There is a devil inside him, and this comfortable shelter is like a prison. Bramayuham is a long film. It feels stretched because it is stuck in one place and has only three characters. The screenplay could have been better, and the editor could have shortened those long scenes of walking, running, sightseeing, and others. It is presented in black-and-white format to add to its dark theme and colour, and it works too. The only problem is that the film lacks chilling, horrifying scenes. There is one or two that maybe scare the hell out of you, but not enough. This longer-than-expected mystery finds its key in the actors. To start with Mammootty, what a legendary actor! At his age, other actors hardly try to act and mostly think about retirement, but this man acts like he has just started. Another powerful performer is Arjun Ashokan, who has done a brilliant job. Imagine standing in front of Mammootty and giving a neck-to-neck performance. He must have been feeling so proud. The third main actor is Sidharth Bharathan, and he has also given a solid performance. Rahul Sadasivan's flick has some incredible scenes, but it isn't flawless, for sure. Nonetheless, a good watch.
