I Like Movies (2022)
7/10
Underrated but understandable why.

Warning: Spoilers
I like movies crafts an unlikeable character who ultimately learns that he is not the main character of some great big movie like he projects, it's a journey to finding humility.

That may be hard for audiences to digest because for almost all of the movie the main character is blatantly unlikeable.

He's narcissistic, arrogant, abusive, and not very talented.

But then it's revealed his father committed suicide and then his attitude starts to make a bit of sense, but doesn't really justify it, though at the same time, i don't think the movie ever admits it's justified.

The final student film perfectly represents his arc though, as what he's left with is viewing a movie that's not about him at all and discovering that everything isn't always about him all the time.

He doesn't get the girl, he doesn't make the great movie at the end, he doesn't get into the school of his dreams, but he also doesn't deserve any of these things and it's almost strangely satisfying to see him be rejected and get a much needed reality check, as if he was accepted into NYU, his personal problems and narcissism would only grow.

If you're/we're a young film maker, there's still a lot points you can find yourself in and connect on.

Strangely I found myself pitching Happiness to my partner only a few days ago so it was quite surreal to see him verbatim describing it.

I also experienced the woes of Shrek's overpowering popularity.

And we've probably all made one cringe teen video in our lives.

The irony to the movie, 'I Like Movies' is it kind of left me feeling a dislike for those memories. To me they had many positive and fun times. But the film seems to only wallow in the negative, lonely and self-absorbed aspects of it. It can be frustrating at times to following a character that's pretty unredeemable, but I feel I understand the intent of the film's message.

It's not a film I ever see myself coming back to or recommending. But I would like to see more come from this director, as this is a promising first project that I believe will find a niche where some people deeply connect to it.
