This is a compelling story which takes place in Britain, where a thalidomide child, of a black Jamaican - white Briton couple, is dumped into a home for unwanted children. A local couple tries to adopt him, which gets bureaucrats involved. We see people ignored, feel sorry for themselves, be impatient, deal with social prejudices, etc. Very well done. I wish it was available in VHS or DVD format.

Very moving ...

This was a very moving film. The star of the film is Terry Wiles, a thalidomide baby abandoned by his Mother and adopted by a very caring, older couple. It was inspiring to see Terry Wiles overcome such a difficult disability. It certainly makes you count your blessings.
Dame Judy Dench is such an amazing actress.
I would like to buy a copy of this film, but have been searching and it is apparently not available. I contacted the BBC in UK, but it is not (yet) available for purchase on their site.

One of the most moving films I've ever seen

This film (actually probably made for TV) is an inspiring story of a Thalidomide child. I saw it when it was originally broadcast on public television. It was shown at least twice but I have not seen it since the early 1980's.
I knew that the actual child played himself in the film. The woman who played his adopted mother did not come across as an actress, just an ordinary "Mum": It was the first time I ever saw Judi Dench!
The moral of the story is that there are a lot of ways to react to a terrible situation but isn't it wonderful to see some people make it into a positive experience. This is a 1 to 2 hankie film but most of the tears are for joy.

I have this film and it's excellent! I collect Judi Dench shows and this one is a must for all collectors. She is very good in this one. All comments welcomed.
The fact that the real Terry plays himself is great and realistic. Brian Pringle is also wonderful as Judi's husband. I heard that Judi stayed in touch with Terry(after he moved to Australia) for many years afterwords. I have almost all the rare shows of Judi Dench and she is very good in all of them. This ranks up there along with Love in a Cold Climate, Bafta Tribute, Amy's View and Comedy of Errors. Merry Wives of Winsor, and many others. She was even good in Z-Cars, an early British police show. Any comments just email.
