A milestone movie
gkb7616 July 2007
Movies may come and movies may go but this one will stay on forever in the hearts of all those that have had a chance to see it. An absolute tearjerker, it brings out the best from thespians "Sivaji" Ganesan and Savitri, the two best actors to have ever graced the Tamil movie screens. Even though the script is a bit too over-dramatic, the movie is certainly poignant and is bound to leave the viewers emotionally overwhelmed as the curtains come down.

The movie's other credits include a good cast highlighted by the other Ganesan, "Gemini", Thangavelu and M N Rajam with each one playing their part subtly yet powerfully. The music, combined with Kannadasan's elegant and poetic lyrics, is another reason why this movie still rings in the hearts of all those that grew up in the 50s and 60s. The fact that you don't feel bored even for a minute during this three-and-half-hour epic is a tribute to the director's screenplay as he wonderfully weaves together several pragmatic and plausible sub-plots into the idealistic main theme of sibling love between a brother and a sister. An absolute classic of Tamil cinema, its a must-see for any Tamil movie connoisseur.

Get yourself a few towels before the movie begins. You're in for a marathon tearjerker that will strain the tear ducts as no other film can. Don't know what it is about Tamils that they love to pay and cry (now they are all crying before the small screen). Sivaji and Savitri both deliver extraordinary performances, and there are a dozen great songs in the film.
