Friendship is everything Warning: Spoilers
"Egao" or "The Smile" is a short film by successful Japanese animated filmmaker Makoto Shinkai. it is about the friendship between a girl and her pet. I must say despite this one being so short (only 2 minutes) I think it managed to get memorable and put a smile on my face. The animation is cute, the characters are very likable and the song is nice too, fits nicely together with what we see. It's tough to say what is best about this one, I personally think it is just all these factors playing together so nicely. I would not say it is essential to understand the Japanese lyrics here as the tone and spirit of this film are still very obvious, but it is nonetheless recommendable. i think this little work of art is a success and you should see it. Thumbs up.

A cute music video about a girl and her hamster
Bdiah12 March 2006
There is nothing really substantive about this video, just a cute music video about a girl and her pet hamster. If you're looking for something of the caliber of his longer works, stick to Beyond the Clouds, Voices of a Distant Star, and She and Her Cat. That being said, the animation is still very crisp and vivid, the song is nice, and watching it is a very enjoyable experience.

Apparently, Makoto Shinkai got the idea for this video because one of his friends speculated on how far a hamster will travel in a hamster wheel in its lifetime. Also, people's relationships with pets seems to be a theme in some of his work (She and Her Cat). Overall, I enjoyed this.
