The New Neighbour
Prismark1025 October 2022
From the creators of The Good Life. Richard Briers' character, Martin Bryce is a world away from Tom Good.

Martin Bryce is in middle management and in his suburban community, he is a nit picking busy body. Full of action plans, charts and leaflets for his neighbourhood action committee.

Martin finds himself under attack when new neighbour Paul Ryman (Peter Egan) moves in. He has a more relaxed, carefree attitude. His easy going charm is a hit on the neighbours such as Howard and Hilda. Even Martin's long suffering wife Ann (Penelope Wilton) finds it easy to mildly flirt with Paul.

The first episode explains why Martin sees Paul as a threat because of an incident at school. So Martin doubles down as a lorry bothers the peace and tranquility of the local area.

It is obvious that Martin has OCD, these days he might even be labelled to be somewhere in the autism spectrum.

At the time the series was shown. It was a contrast between two different men as Martin usually tries to upstage Paul, much to the chagrin of Ann. Here Martin sleeps out all night in the cold so the lorry cannot go past him.

Ever Decreasing Circles was an interesting concept. In some ways it was a forerunner to sitcoms like One Foot in the Grave.

Middle class, middle brow sitcoms set in suburbia but hinting at something darker. Frustration, anger, insecurity and maybe even mental illness.
