Such disparate elements
bkoganbing4 March 2016
I have to give credit to the writers of this particular CI episode. They pulled a lot of disparate elements including a mobster's parole, a mistaken hit, the murder of said hit-man for making the blunder and the tragedy of 9/11 all got rolled into one story.

Before Vincent D'Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe pull it all together and make coherent sense of it Courtney B. Vance whose departure from CI was one I truly missed said he didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

At the center of all this is the disappearance and probably the demise of an accountant. Also at the center are husband and wife Terry Serpico and Alicia Coppola the in-laws of the missing woman.

There's also one nice coda at the end of this story when the arrest is made. It shows sometimes people can get away with things and the law doesn't cover every situation.

Nicely written and well acted by the ensemble cast.

Vengeance

An accountant disappears and the detectives find out she was looking into her deceased brother's finances. This episode was really great and much better than the episode before this. The plot is really unique and the events that happen add suspense especially with what occurs much later in the episode. I do like how the characters are developed, especially one that is a key character in the plot. I also liked how they got someone else to confess to their actions instead of the actual perpetrator of the crime as well. Acting is good as usual and Alicia Coppola plays her character very well in my opinion.

Overall, this was a really great episode due to its unique and suspenseful plot and the well-developed characters. I did like the unique confession as well.

"I don't know whether to laugh or cry"

Really like 'Law and Order: Criminal Intent' on the whole, if more the earlier seasons than the later ones. "But Not Forgotten" struck me as a great episode on my first watch when getting into the show, despite a couple of parts needing more clarity on that viewing. The premise was a fascinating one and the title sounds very poetic and bittersweet on its own. Also liked the previous three episodes of a generally solid Season 3, "Undaunted Mettle" faring best.

"But Not Forgotten" got better with each subsequent watch, a further three times over-time, and still is a great one. It is not quite perfect, but "But Not Forgotten" is to me one of the better episodes of the season's first half, one of the better episodes of the season and the first outstanding Season 3 episode. After the first two being very good and a good if slightly bland previous one, so definitely a step or two in the right direction.

There is so much good here, but a big advantage is the great acting from all the leads. Cannot fault Vincent D'Onofrio, always a big part of the show's appeal and its heart basically and he is delightful. Courtney B. Vance also shines, shining the most he has in a while, especially when very aptly describing the case as operatic.

Moreover, there is lovely witty interaction between all the characters, nothing static here. The whole coversation regarding coffee and dogs is priceless. The story is very eventful and is very clever and twisty, complicated but mostly not too difficult to comprehend.

Production values are slick and appropriately gritty, like the original 'Law and Order' and 'Special Victims Unit' the editing had become smoother and tighter by this point. The music fitted quite well, both in tone and how it was placed. The ending is surprising and beautifully done. Goren always fascinates.

Did at times find the story slightly muddled in the middle. The accent is also distractingly horrible.

Overall, outstanding, the first episode of the season to be. One of the best episodes of Season 3. 9/10

Lots of twists & turns, but something really interesting with the Wife

Warning: Spoilers
I have only seen Alicia Coppola on the Law Enforcement side. In this she is married to both sides of the Law & Crime. Until I saw this I remembered her on NCIS as LCDR on JAG & NCIS (Original) 2003-2005ish, But then she is a FBI agent on LA NCIS in 2010.

But her acting on this Episode of L&O:CI, portrayed a Blind Sided Wife, but in the End she Knew Everything, and still doesn't break any laws. For some reason this Actress for some reason I have had a Crush, and also for some reason scared of her at the same time of each show she has been on.
