Somebody on twitter the other day said The Sweeney is the most overrated tv show ever. More people will bore you with how great it is,because, not despite of its political incorrectness and violence. I think the truth is between the 2 points of view. I watched every episode on dvd in the past 2 weeks. I have seen them all before but it does not often repay repeat viewings. The show is nearly all about armed robbers so the stories are often predictable. There is little story or character development. I wish there had been someone in the production company shaping the stories to an overall plan but there is not. But there are some good episodes and some good guest actors but I keep thinking you could describe it as a cockney dirty Harry. Compared to series of a similar vintage,Gangsters,The Professionals and Callan I find The Sweeney lacking in depth and variation. But people will go on and on about how The Sweeney was the best thing ever made. If people think The Sweeney is violent and un pc seek out the BBC series Gangsters which was better but less well known.

Victims is probably one of the best episodes of season 4 and is reminiscent of the hard hitting story lines that you got in the previous seasons of 1 and 2. On both sides of the law people are pushed or fall into doing things that they feel bad about and can't see an easy way out of.

I won't spoil it with a full run on the plot, you just have to watch it.

'Lynda La Plante' plays a good part in this as Jimmy Park's girlfriend and Sheila Reid, who plays Doreen Haskins, does very well in her role as well.

A psychological episode that is there to make up the fact that DCI Frank Haskins has not featured much in the final series of The Sweeney.

The victims here are both the police and the loved ones of the criminals left behind.

Jimmy Park is an informant on the run for shooting a policeman. Regan and Carter reckon that his girlfriend Eve Fisher knows of his whereabouts and pressure her.

Regan also finds himself looking for Haskins wife Doreen. She has been feeling fragile for a while and has disappeared.

It leaves Haskins to contemplate his own future on the force.

I think this would had been a stronger episode if we knew of Haskins personal life more. Instead it comes out of the blue. Not helped that Haskins has been seldom seen.

Also Haskins has been so traumatised, he has forgotten basic police work when it comes to missing persons. It is left to Regan to follow some obvious clues to find Doreen.

An okay episode. The presence of some character psychology makes it slightly different from the usual cops and robbers plots. It's not exactly gripping stuff but it does the job well enough if you're a fan.
