From the point of view of someone raised in the Deep South who grew up in an era of racial unrest, and who also has firsthand knowledge of both factory assembly line work and seemingly useless college degrees, this particular episode could not be better. The two actresses portraying Verdie and her daughter both gave such stellar performances I could hardly believe it. The story reveals tough struggles of gender and racial inequality, education bias, parental hopes and dreams, all in a setting of a life altering world war affecting everyone. The symbolic simplicity of two tiny babies, one black and one white, riding together in a wooden wagon at the end was a heartwarming note at the end. The Waltons was a beloved favourite of mine when it first aired, and this episode ranks near the top tier.
