As everyone is preparing for a state dinner with the new president of Indonesia, the roof begins to cave in. There is a hurricane that threatens a fleet of ships, an FBI standoff at a house full of survivalists, Toby's efforts to get a friend out of prison, the call girl returns, and much more, including the first appearance by Stockard Channing as the First Lady. Things aren't resolved and the next episode should be well set up.

Bartlet tells joke to Indonesian President
jack-992968 February 2018
The funniest scene is when president Bartlet tells a joke to the Indonesian President, who reacts with his usual stone face. President tries to recover- hysterical. But I recently saw the episode again, and this time, that scene was missing. There were the other scenes between the 2, but not the joke scene. What happened?

THE WEST WING: SEASON 1, EPISODE 7: The State Dinner
Directed by: Thomas Schlamme
Written by: Aaron Sorkin & Paul Redford
Welcome to the stage First Lady Abbey Bartlet played by the legendary Stockard Channing. Channing indeed was spectacular in this role from the very beginning and like her on screen husband Abbey is introduced so wonderfully in the first episode she appears.
The one scene we get between Abbey and Josiah isn't the most explosive but it gives a look into their relationship. This is an interesting episode cause you have the prepping and attendance of a state dinner played opposite many world tragedies incoming.
When the dinner begins the drama increases as the White House staff must work to make the world better while also trying to look good while at the dinner. It is a great episode.

Abbie!

Warning: Spoilers
At a state dinner for the President of Indonesia, a fund raiser (David Rasche, SLEDGE HAMMER!) shows up with Sam's call girl friend as his date. Sam offers her $10,000 to not go home with him. And the debut of...Abbie Bartlet! Stockard Channing (GREASE, THE STOCKARD CHANNING SHOW) slides right in, and it's perfect. Danny openly flirts with CJ. Priceless. And the first of many quips at New Jersey's expense. Someone on the writing staff (perhaps New Yorker Sorkin himself) will take great delight over the coming seasons in Garden State roasting. At the end, the President talks to a bleeding sailor on a ship being battered by a hurricane.
