The Haunted Garden

Warning: Spoilers
I'm currently working my way through as many old British TV programmes from the 70's and 80's as I can find on youtube. I happened to watch a couple of horror-themed ones recently, what with it being Halloween and all, and have found them to be very enjoyable, hence searching for more.

Worlds Apart: The Haunted Garden is an unusual programme/episode. I can't imagine anything like this being on TV now. It's odd, twee and very low budget.

The story is about young terminally ill woman who, while resting in the garden of her parent's country home one day, hears the sound of plane crashing, though there is no visual evidence of the event. Shortly after, she bumps into an American pilot and he starts to regularly visit her. They fall in love and plan to marry. The odd thing is that no one else has ever seen him but the parents of the woman and other people from the village have seen her talking to someone who is not there.

The parents and doctor assume it is a mental thing and when the wedding day comes they think that the fact the pilot will not turn up (because he is not real) will put an end to the woman's delusions.

However, at the end, he does turn up to the wedding and miraculously everyone can see him. During a conversation with the vicar, the pilot reveals the woman is going to die but he will take care of her. In other words, he is some kind of guardian angel that has come to lead her to the other side.

It's a strange story, full of plot holes and unexplainable character actions (the fact that a wedding day got arranged between a woman and a non-existent man is far fetched beyond belief). However, despite this, there was something incredibly sad, sentimental and magical about this programme that kept me watching. The music, while in some ways primitive and silly, was actually very effective at evoking a feeling of sadness.

At the end, as they married couple are driving off, the man disappears again so no one else can see him but the woman is seen talking and gesticulating as if he is still there. I found it incredibly sad.

There are more things in Heaven and Earth ...

Terminally ill, young Englishwoman Jennifer Cranley meets dashing American Pilot, Lieutenant Benjamin Blake, whilst convalescing at her parent's house, the pair discuss marriage, the problem is, nobody else can see Benjamin.

I thoroughly enjoyed this episode, is this going to be the show's standout episode, I wonder.. it's certainly the best episode I've seen so far.

Let's be honest, it's not a horror, it's a love story with a very unusual twist. The question, is Jennifer psychic, is the illness affecting her, or is she somehow being influenced by heavy medication.

It's incredibly moving and heartfelt at times, almost profoundly so, there are a few scenes that actually gave me chills. Was Ben an actual angel?

Jennifer's relationship with Benjamin is quirky enough, but the one with her parents is even more bizarre, one of those dads who'll do anything, and a mother who's pretty terrifying.

There's a bit of a twist, and a bit of a mystery, the main question of course, is he going to turn up.

A perfectly suitable cast, Moray Watson and Rosemary Leach are perfect as the parents, Judi Bowker is perfect as delicate English Rose Jennifer, and son of Wilfrid Hyde-White, Alex is perfect, pretty striking, again perfect for the part.

8/10.
