You might have to move out of your swanky apartment and go back to working the streets
Mrpalli7727 January 2018
A well known lawyer was found dead tied on the bed of a fancy corporate apartment with a single gunshot at close range. He was involved in a company scandal and he was about to testify before Congress, there has been a case in which the CEO wiretapped phones to spy the executives . Detectives tried so hard to figure out who spent the night with him: actually he booked an uptown escort, but he canceled the date to hang out with another escort of Brazilian origin (Mercedes Renard), who used to ruin wealthy people's marriages and whose fingerprints were found at the crime scene. Later on, McCoy discovered the hooker had a lesbian relationship with the CEO, who owned the murder weapon. The victim asked her 10 million dollars for not talking before the Congress...

Susan Misner played a heartless character similar to the one played by Meryl Streep in "The Devil wears Prada": she used to fire employees (males) without distress, even those whose wife was succumbing to cancer. A real career woman.

Cornered

Anybody who has read any of my other reviews for for example individual episodes of the 'Law and Order' shows, am slowly working my way through writing reviews for all the episodes of 'Law and Order and 'Special Victims Unit' with some way to go still, will know already how much admiration there is from me for anything that tackles difficult and controversial themes and issues. Often done very well in the franchise. "Corner Office" is no exception to this.

"Corner Office" was a little disappointing after such a brilliant previous episode in "Deadlock", but it still manages to be good. Has a lot that is very well executed indeed (the best aspects even being brilliant). Do prefer episodes that have tougher topics explored more uncompromisingly and also the ones that are more complex than what is seen in "Corner Office". It is a good episode, just not a great one and it had potential to be with the idea it had.

Milena Govich to me is still very bland, and other than "Deadlock" this was one that was never really addressed. Her chemistry with Jesse L Msrtin (who is without issue) is lukewarm at best and a large part of the problrm is that he is infinitely more interesting than the other.

DId also find the ending unrealistic and the decision came over as too biased and prejudicial.

However, there is a lot in "Corner Office" that is good. T is a slickly made episode, the editing especially having come on quite a bit from when the show first started (never was it a problem but it got more fluid with each episode up to this stage). The music is sparingly used and never seemed melodramatic, the theme tune easy to remember as usual. The direction is sympathetic enough without being too low key on the whole.

The script is taut and intelligent, with everything intriguing. The story is not perfect, but it is never dull and doesn't feel simplistic or like there were not enough twists or surprises (plenty in fact). Most of it is not too complicated, apart from the final quarter. All the regulars are very good, with one of the best moments being with the typically great S Epatha Merkerson.

Overall, not great but good. 7/10.

Pretty woman's pretty woman

Warning: Spoilers
In the cut throat world of big business it gets dirty close to the top. Quite frankly the guy who is shot to death in the corporate apartments of a big company is no real loss to the world, he was blackmailing his female CEO to out her about her lesbian relationship.

Susan Misner is the Martha Stewart type CEO who has learned to play it rough. She even has her offices bugged the way Harry Cohn used to have Columbia Pictures wired for sound in order to catch subversive remarks against his person. It's what leads the police to Misner's arrest.

The woman she's in a relationship with is a high end call girl from Brazil, the kind to die for. Mercedes Renard is one statuesque beauty who if Misner didn't have she might have parlayed her assets into becoming Donald Trump's latest bimbo.

Other reviewers are right. There is no real evidence that Misner was in on the deed. But she trips herself up on the stand and allows Sam Waterston to go in for the kill.

Not the first or the last time juries convicted someone because they didn't like them.

Warning: Spoilers
PROS: 1) There's a plot twist I didn't see coming. 2) Lt. Van Buren has a nice scene where she gives Milena Govich's character the stink eye for being overly critical of a woman who is a demanding boss. 3) It's always a hoot when you get to see McCoy wearing mom jeans at the end.

CONS: 1) The plot twist isn't well executed--the writers and relevant actors didn't let themselves have any fun with it. 2) Milena Govich's acting is embarrassingly bad. And there is absolutely zero chemistry between her and Jesse L. Martin, who plays the other detective. This kind of wrecks the police investigation part of the story--I found myself greatly relieved when the district attorney's office took over to handle prosecuting the case.

RECOMMENDATION: If you like the theme of a woman in a position of authority who purports to be a cool- headed pragmatist but turns out to be otherwise, check out Navy Blues from season 8. Netflix has it. It's a much more compelling episode.

Cornor Office = Glass Ceiling

Warning: Spoilers
The police investigate a company who's female CEO is accused of spying on employees. When the whistle-blower is found dead in a company hotel room. An investigation leads the cops to the lead suspect's girlfriend. There is little to no evidence that she actually did it, but Jack uses her Martha Stewart like personality against her to get the conviction.

I thought this episode made Jack look like a prick, there was basically no evidence against the girl, but he thought she was too power hungry to be innocent. He put some guy on the stand that basically said she fired him when his wife had cancer, which had absolutely nothing to do with the case. After that the jury lost any sympathy for her and sent her away for life.
