Great, but not like the books
GwydionMW26 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The scriptwriters have mixed elements from the books, but changed quite a lot.

Which makes for some surprises. People dying sooner than expected.

It didn't spoil my enjoyment.

Hot damn
Calicodreamin15 November 2021
What a way to start of season four, I mean hot damn. Kind of funny for Uhtred to finally be setting his eyes back to his homeland now after all this time, but I'll go along.

Sexist White Males rape, loot, hump & pillage.

True to the spirit of Bernard Cornwall's wonderful Historical Fiction, but with it's own plot, this story is in keeping with human history for all bar the last 30 years. The story is wonderful. The soundtrack is probably the most annoying I have ever heard; the phony Danish accents only slightly less so. The simple solution is to watch it with the sound muted, English subtitles turned on, and Wagner playing at maximum volume on your stereo.

Great

Warning: Spoilers
The point in tv adaptations is that they offer something different from the book. So what if they go to few more places or there is less significance placed in a particular location. The idea I believe is to allow uttred the time he needs to form a bond with his estranged son. Where books have the opportunity to describe and analyse a relationship such depth would make a show made for tv boring. This series is great and offers an authenticity that was lost with Vikings.

Amazing!
skan-5889426 April 2020
As a young producer, I gave a lot of attention for details and I'm amazed about how the show is improving. Maybe the only negative point I have is that from the book to the show Uthred doesn't get old, I mean the Uthred who saved Edouard as a baby is the same as the Uthred standing alongside him in battles. But honestly, I can't see another actor playing the role of Uthred. Now about season 4 as again the other seasons, never let you time to get bored or even to turn your head from your screen to light a cigarette, every detail as every conversation have it purpose. Now the saddest part is that we will have to wait minimum a year to see the season 5 and I guess during this year or 2, the show will become the main show of Netflix and I guess the audience will grow bigger day by day! Anyway, Destiny is all :*

TV at its finest
happycouple-880462 May 2020
As a TV series, this is excellence across the board. Multi-layered, strong characters, quality casting and acting,a lead who inspires loyalty, humor, scenery, adventure. emotional intensity. It is quite literally the only show I watch. After discovering The Last Kingdom, it made every other show pale in comparison.

Fans books relax and enjoy
claudia_rp27 April 2020
Excellent episode !! and for those who are fans of the books remember this story is not an adaptation of these !!!!!!! So enjoy this tvshow with its own story, although based on the books it has its own plot.

Only the children age in The Last Kingdom
Fitzwill-Jane10 June 2020
This is one of my favorite shows, but the first episode was disappointing. One thing that bothers me is that many years have passed since the events at the end of Season 3, yet everyone looks the same. Brida now has braids in her hair and is wearing make up, but she doesn't look any older. Uhtred looks exactly the same. They could have at least changed his hair style. That's easy. Lady Aelswith actually looks younger than Aethelflaed now. For me, it's distracting. If they didn't want to make the characters look older, they should have made less time pass between the events of Season 3 and 4.

I agree with others that the music is way too loud.

Good start but disappointing in one aspect
grantss17 September 2023
Edward is King and Uhtred is no longer persona non grata in Wessex (and certainly is non-non grata to Aethelfraed...). Uhtred receives word that his estate in Northumbria, Bebbanburg, taken over by his uncle Aelfric, is under attack by Scots. Moreover, due to these attacks Aelfric's forces are dwindling. Uhtred sees a chance to reclaim what is rightfully his, ideally with help from King Edward. Meanwhile, an uneasy standoff exists between the Saxons and the Danes in Wessex, Mercia and East Anglia but the Danes have a scheme afoot.

After the brilliant Season 3 I was wondering where the series would go next. For three seasons now I've been wondering when Uhtred will pursue his claim to Bebbanburg. This aspect of his life didn't feature at all in Season 3, making me half-think that he's given up on his claim and revenge on his uncle.

Well, now we have the answer and it sets the plot for the season. He certainly hasn't forgotten about Bebbanburg and his uncle and fully intends to reclaim his title. This sets things up for an intriguing plot loop that is more than three seasons in the making.

In addition we have the usual Saxon-Dane friction down south plus the internal political machinations with (as always) Aethelred and newcomer Aethelhelm to the fore.

So a great setup for what should be another excellent season.

However, on a negative note, there are two large plot implausibilities / inconsistencies. Why do the Saxons continue to trust Haesten when it is very clear that his loyalties lie with the Danes? He's betrayed the Saxons on numerous occasions now, to the point of literally fighting against them.

Similarly, why is Aldhelm still working for Aethelred? You'd think after sometime stabs you and leaves you to die you wouldn't go back to them...

I can see why these dynamics exist, as they help this season's arc, but these do make for a weakness and lack of continuity in the season-on-season plot.

So Disappointed
ibimac-570-37426528 April 2020
I love this series but this season is awful, the music is so over bearing you can't hear the characters speak. They have made it too slick noone has a hair out of place or dirt on their face anymore, where the previous seasons had an edge to them. The dialogue has become slack and so has the story line. The story has become like a soap opera and I'm so disappointed in it.

Netflix please stop putting crappy music scores over good programmes it totally ruins it and adds absolutely nothing. Music to set a scene is fine but for every converdstion it's just off putting.

The only saving grace is Utred, he's still hot.

Constant Loud Background Music
johndoemofo13 May 2020
There must of been a total of 90 seconds that didn't have background music. Only shows that are garbage need to use background music to hypnotize. Stop with the annoying music, if I wanted music i'd listen to a CD, not watch a show.

You can tell that the directors aren't adapting the novels this season.
stevenirvin9 June 2020
Disappointing, cliche, predictable, boring, lazy, and most of all not worth the watch at all! Seasons 1 through 3 were so intense, deep, and exciting, they brought amazing characters along with amazing character arcs. Alfred and Uhtred shared such a complex relationship it boggled me. Season 4 lowered the bar not only on budget but on everything else, some directors should just stick to adapting. The same thing could be said for Game of Thrones, once the directors ran out of books to adapt, it went downhill, fast, just as this show will if it hasn't already.

Show has now become rubbish!
computerchase20 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I love this series but this season 4 is absolutely awful, the music is too loud.

The story is so poor and all the episodes are just fillers! Filler after filler. Boring , sense less family fueds.

I'll stop watching this , waste of time.

Uhtred, your lord of mercia, finally! Then , he goes and relinquishes it like its toilet paper! 3 seasons we have been waiting and grinding to see Uhtred to get rewarded, then he throws it away like toilet paper. Unrealistic bs story, yet again driven by feminism.

I stopped watching S4 E8

1 star is generous, the show is dead.

Not Cornwells novels
morn196026 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
From the first episode of season 4 ut is quite apparent that the writers have a abandoned the novels except for character names, locations and major events. Those major events seem to have little to do with the novels, as always in this series, just a general familiarness. Disappointed yet again
