Dr. Ellingham's career hangs in the balance
tonygumbrell11 August 2023
In Port Wenn not a single day goes by with tribulations for one, or usually, more people. It seems unreal, but jibes with my experience of the real world. The Doctor is stoic in the best ancient traditions, and I don't know about you but this Aristophanes, and Euripides combined. I believe a tenth series will air, fortunately for this addict who found the combined pathos and irony of this 'last' episode gut wrenching. I can sleep soundly now knowing that this isn't end for the Doctor. I actually had a bad night this aired having watched the whole thing from season1, episode 1. There is still a glimmer of hope, I'm not religious in the least but I'm going to pray.

Could this be the final episode of the series?
planktonrules28 January 2020
Season Nine was just completed this fall and the DVDs just came out for the show. However, fans of the series are wondering....will there be a Season Ten? Well, at this point we don't know and in a recent interview, Martin Clunes seemed unsure of this as well. So, it's very possible that "License to Practice" is the final episode of the series. Who knows? But it's hopefully a very good one considering!

The first main theme in this episode is Al and Morwenna's wedding....and everything's going wrong. There's no one to officiate, the gown is locked in a closed dry cleaners and more...much more. To make it worse, her friend Janice is here to visit and instead of helping, she has her own issues that further distract Morwenna. The second theme is Doc's upcoming evaluation where he'll need to assist with a surgery...and it will surely try his ability to cope with his hemophobia. Minor subplots involve Penhale and his feelings for Janice, a woman in town losing her finger...and buddy finding it!

This episode features a guest star, Tom Conti. I was happy to see him as his career has been rather quiet in recent years. That and so many interesting and important plots make this one a must-see.

Hope for the Future

A lot happens. Martin's mentor comes to evaluate him and there is something going on with this guy. He tries his best to deal with his hemophobia taking it to the bitter end. When this is not the issue, the other thing that fills up the episode is the wedding of Al and Morwenna. I certainly hope this is not the last time we see these characters. I've loved this show even though I started it long after its beginnings.

Perfect

Sure there were some goofy moments but otherwise this was the perfect ending to the season and the series. We hear that season 10 is possibly filming early 2022. I love the show but it is okay if this were the final episode for good.

let's be perfectly clear

Warning: Spoilers
The reason this series refused to die, the reason viewers kept demanding it back year after year, is that it is the video equivalent of comfort food. Watching every episode of every year is both fun and even a guilty pleasure because chances are. wherever YOU live, is not as peaceful or idyllic as Port Wen. If it is not broken, don't fix it? This wacko plot arc ending in the doc leaving medicine is just plain stupid. A needless twist that no viewer ever asked for or needed. It is cringe-worthy.

Literally a review of the title

The 'Licence' in the title is a noun, so is spelled correctly but the 'Practice' in the title is a verb, so should be spelled 'Practise' in the UK, where the programme is based.
