Alliances forged and fallen

Another episode of bonds being built then broken and some backstory on the OG ahole. Decent acting and an interesting storyline. Three seasons in and I wish Johnny and LaRusso would finally decide whether or not to be friends.

I don't know?

Something seems off this season. I feel like the writing has gotten a little lazy. The story is harder to follow. It's missing that Miyagi magical aspect...if that makes sense?

The Kreese story is dull and slow..

We shall see...

So far so great!

To see Johnny and Daniel fight together for a short moment is genuinely everything I wanted to see since i was a kid growing up with the original. Brought happy tears to my eyes.

They got every single thing right.

I just can't believe my eyes. Ralph Macchio aka Daniel LaRusso and William Zabka aka Johnny Lawrence fight are 59 and 55 yrs old and they still fight like Champs. It's amazing how they got storyline to fight to dialogues to every single scene perfect. Kudos to the writers for making this amazing Episode.

Kreese gets the Spotlight!
jester-405641 January 2021
After an ok opening episode to the season. This one kicks it out of the park.

We start off with a 1960s flashback to young Kreese and I absolutely loved it. There are more scattered throughout the ep, and I'm glad there was. Young Kreese is charismatic and a joy to watch (I really hope this isn't the last we see of Barrett Carnahan). Present day Kreese is getting Cobra Kai back in order & getting Tory back into the fold. ** Also, as an aside. It was good to see the ginger extra still at Cobra Kai. Hopefully he gets some lines soon.

The other half of the episode is all about buddy cop duo Daniel & Johnny. And it was just as great. Car chases, fight scenes & witty banter. What more could you want?

Heartbreaking
evansjoshyr2 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The moment miguel confronts Johnny about being the reason he was in a coma was heartbreaking. It was kinda true that Johnny is the reason he was injured and this scene was inevitable that miguel would blame him. Yet it is still heartbreaking because we know how much he already blames himself and his intentions were actually really righteous. Seeing an act mercy destroy miguel this much makes me feel bad for both miguel and johnny.

Sympathy for the Devil
Gislef3 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
So this episode we get more of Kreese's back story. And it's very sad. back in the 60s Kreese had a mother who went insane, and he got picked on by jocks at his school.. And in the present, he feed a gerbil to a snake to determine if his students are tough. You know, the usual sad-luck story.

The opening timejump plays with our perceptions, both by having Martin Kove's son Jesse play the young jock, and mouthing several of Kreese's mottos. Of course, the bus boy he's picking on turns out to be Kreese, and Kreese fights the jock and his friend and gets the girl, Betsy.

I'm not sure if we're supposed to have sympathy for the "humanized" Kreese or not. I still don't, mostly due to his modern-day speech about there only being strong and weak, no good or bad. And everyone thinks they're the hero. Yes, that's the usual rationale for "good" villains, but Kreeese has been a scum bucket throughout three movies and the first two seasons of the series. It's a little late to try and redeem/humanize him now. And it's hard to believe that Kreese still thinks that he's a hero, after all the happy crappy he's pulled on Miyagi, Daniel, Johnny, etc.

The bit where Kreese admits that he got Kory's address from her paperwork is better than all the "humanizing" background. Give him a little bit of self-honesty and humanity, we don't need the whole backstory.

We're already supposed to swallow Johnny as a mislead good guy who is trying to redeem himself. Tossing Kreese's "humanization" onto the pile is too much.

Xolo Manduena does good in his brief role as having to face that he's cripple. Even though *spoiler* he recovers his legs down the road. No, it's not reasonable that he blames Johnny for his injury. But it's the kind of thing a teenager does.

Besides Kreese, we get a bit more humanization of Tory. She has a sick mother and an abusive landlord. This attempt to "humanize" her works a little better, because she doesn't have Kreese's history.

The "partnership" between Johnny and Daniel as they hunt down Robby is good. They get to fight together, then fight each other. All while arguing. "They fight and bite and fight!" This is a bit more "realistic" then their finding common ground in previous episodes.

Mary Mouser as Sam gets the short end of the stick here, as Sam doesn't have much to do: the focus is on Johnny &Daniel, and Kreese, and Tory.

Overall, "Nature vs. Nuture" is slightly above-average episode. Mostly because of the Johnny/Daniel pairing. The background on Kreese, and the soap opera antics with Robby, Miguel, and Tory take away from what we're really tuning into see. But your mileage may vary.

But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. What do you think?

GOOD COP BAD COP
deanbeckton2 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A somewhat goofy episode where Daniel and Johnny join forces to try and track down Robby. It works for the most part, but I'm glad it was only the one episode where things get this silly. Of course, Cobra Kai is over the top and knows what it is, but this episode in particular kind of drifts (pun intended) off track with its fun. The good cop bad cop model is played for laughs, maybe it's just me, but I felt it was a tad too much, especially with the prison scene and car chase. The fight sequence in the garage is pretty excellent, it was nice to see the guys doing most of their own moves. Ralph Macchio in particular shined and pulled off some really cool techniques. This is the first episode to show the Kreese in Vietnam flashback stuff. Personally, I feel the show could have done without it. The mystery behind Kreese and his time in Vietnam was always part of what made his character interesting. Having it start being played out in front of me was a little underwhelming, and pretty generic. I really feel they should have used this time to flesh out the younger characters a little more instead. Tory is seen for the first time since the events of season 2. It was good to see her home life explored a bit. Kreese has an engaging interaction with her and we see (some of) the lengths he's willing to go in order to keep his strongest students. We also see Robby confronted by Daniel, and the police. It's a decent scene and really captures how alone Robby is feeling.

Not a bad episode.
mm-3912 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Nature vs. Nurture is not a bad episode. La Russo and Lawrence go a P I show looking for Lawrence son. A two opposites crime show. Meanwhile Lawrence star student is in the hospital which give Kobra Kia a soap opera feel. Kresse is in charge of the Dojo. We got here!; a steamy, brewing stew of deception, intrigue and action a good mix for drama. I show ten years form I will say did I actually watch this. But I will enjoy for the now.

Kreese Storyline Is A Mistake
chunkylefunga2 January 2021
We don't need to see a Kreese origin story.

Humanising him is going to ruin his character.

Can't we just have a character who is an complete arse for absolutely no reason. Now we're going to be made to feel sorry for him and it'll taint the franchise.

N A T U R E V S . N U R T U R E

After a great start in the third season of Cobra Kai this episode shows us some great teamwork between Daniel LaRusso and John Lawrence. I enjoyed it to see them both working on the same mission to find Robbie.

And of course it escalates and they split up in the end. But I have still hope they will team up and fight together against Kreese like they did it in the autoshop against a few gangsters.

Also seeing how Kreese goes in building his new Cobra Kai, preparing for an assault is incredible good written. You never know what he's planning, nobody is save in his presence.

What's with these hairdo's?
Steve_Holt_31 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
For some reason Robbie, Miguel, and Daniel all come into this season with the Flock-of-Seagulls coif made popular by Sam Jackson in Pulp Fiction. Somebody's gotta fix this, it's hard to look at.

Daniel and Johnny work together, which is great, but getting repetitive. It's fun to see them together and getting along, but the eventual argument/falling apart is getting too predictable. It's high time we start seeing some progress in the way they see each other.

Daniel is once again his high-and-mighty self. He does make some good acknowledgments, but he also still makes an ass of himself always condescending to Johnny. Even the way he treats Robbie. He says he's there to help, but he'd already called the cops before they'd even talked. Kinda hard to earn trust that way.

Thank goodness there was no Dimitri in this episode.

Season 1 was a 9 star Season 2 was an 8 star So far, season 3 is two 7 star episodes. I'm anticipating something to jump it up a bit.
