It Takes a Nation of Romesh to Cheer Us Up
owen-watts15 June 2020
A curiously engaging and well-balanced show with a very hard to describe format. Essentially, it's a chat show, between Romesh, two celebrities/comedians and about twenty random members of the British public. Also his mum. Sort of like an inverse Gogglebox.

The discussions are usually topically and frequently mundane - but Romesh's bracingly open banter and the diverse quirks of his "hand-picked" nation help smoothe it into something genuinely very fun to watch. In the first series there was also a strangely placed celebrity "note taker" who sat amidst the crowd which didn't seem particularly necessary.

Forced due to circumstance to operate via multiple video calls for the second series onward the format got a strange new vitality and became weirdly comforting - like a weekly hang-out with friends. I've heard a few people referring to it like that and in increasingly fraught times there's something oddly cathartic about it all. I'm adamant that they need his actual gang in the title sequence though - not that bundle of actors. I want Pride of Wales jumping out of a helicopter and like... Wheeler Dealer doing flips.

To be fair after being turned off by most of the chat show format, this actually made me smile. Excellent wit and with a big heart. Well done, great stuff 👏

Diverse topics, unexpected turns and comments, also, most importantly, you get to see Romesh and his cool mum.

The Ranganation

Rubbish quite simply.

I don't see the appeal of the programme, or the comedy appeal of the host. 1.2 million viewers doesn't make it good.

Dire. Sorry.

Superb!!

Perfect comedy for all. Why the low ratings? I don't understand. So funny and witty. Better than Graham Norton (the version with social distancing). GN show is not well edited and doesn't feel well made.

This show is an example of how Romesh has monopolised this part of the TV comedy market and as a result the script is utterly lame and predictable

Weak sauce...

So funny with a great atmosphere!

I love the whole concept of the show, how they bring ordinary people to the spotlight. The way romesh and the guests each episode bounce off of the ranganation is so hilarious, it makes the ordinary people as funny as the even best comedians!! I love how it's a diverse selection of people who always have different opinions but this show brings people with different opinions together rather than splitting them apart!! I also love the reviews of the weekly news, Romesh's jokes are so brilliant, I find myself laughing out loud so much while watching.

Also, it's been a struggle for these comedy shows to have the same atmosphere with the covid restrictions, but even with everyone on the video call its still so funny and I forget that they used to be in the studio! Brilliant :)
