For the first episode of What If...?, this was pretty good. I got used to the animation & voice acting pretty quickly. The pacing is fast and awkward but that's what you can expect when you cram a two hour movie into 30 minutes. All of the twists were spoiled in the trailer so the element of surprise wasn't there for me. I hope the show will have more connections to other alternate universes in the next episodes and have an overarching storyline.

What If... Captain Carter Were the First Avenger?
Prismark1014 August 2021
The What If comic series has been running since 1977. This Marvel cartoon series takes a look at alternative history which can handily be slotted into the multiverse.
The first episode imagines Peggy Carter getting the super soldier serum after an incident that leaves Steve Rogers incapacitated.
In short Marvel/Disney can have fun playing around with the characters in the MCU.
This is a different take on Captain America: The First Avenger. It's actually Peggy Carter as Captain Britain who takes on the Nazis and Hydra.
The series benefits from most of the actors from the MCU reprising their roles. The action is fast paced, the animation takes a while to get used to. The animation needed to be better.
This is a show that kids will like and fire up their imagination.

A different but great perspective

The story is short and very fast paced, so for anyone in a hurry, watching this episode is a great option IF you are an MCU fan. And that's a big if since I believe the story would not be as effective if the audience was not already familiarized with the first Captain America movie. Without the established MCU, the episode is at best just good enough. But having watching the previous films makes it much more enjoyable with the references and how the story unfolds in a similar direction but with a different perspective. It stays true to the characters and I just enjoyed so much watching them again with a different setting. Definitely recommended to anyone who enjoys the Marvel characters.

Nice first episode, waiting for the second

Just watched the first episode, so chose to write the review while it's still fresh.
I liked it a lot, the animation is amazing and the voice acting is nice too. Josh Keaton's voice is incredibly resemblant to Chris Evans', I wouldn't have noticed the change if I didn't know about it before watching.
I liked to see the changes in the story of The First Avenger following the experiment with Peggy Carter, loved seeing skinny Steve Rogers again and hearing Sebastian Stan's voice for Bucky. The score is awesome too and I'm very excited to see how everything's going to connect.
Can't wait to watch episode 2, bring it on, Marvel!

Needed at least 15 more minutes to breathe and tell the story smoothly . Impressive animation and visuals. Surely things could only get better. Glad Marvel is taking constant risks first with the shows n now with this. Really looking forward to the future episodes.
Ok Episode

The season finale has just dropped, so I'm going to review each episode of season 1 of What If.
This episode was ok. Nothing special. Nothing deviated that hard, it's just that Peggy Carter is now Captain America, and Steve is piloting a version of the Iron Man Armor. The pacing was way to fast, and their were very few character moments. I liked the animation and the action, it was very fluid. Most of the voice actors were great, except for Sebastian Stan(you need to have a voice coach or something! Overall, it was okay.

Tbh when I heard about this episode i thought it was just the first avenger but gender flipped. Nope this episode has a new third act and its amazing introducing a great new villian. This episode is well acted and the acting is amazing. Captain Carter is a great character and i cant wait to see her come back in future seasons of the shows. Overall great start to the show and im excited to see where it goes next. Side note there is ab out 28 mins of story but it feels like a whole movie.
Ok

Warning: Spoilers
This series has a very weary atmosphere, the narration from the Watcher gives it a Twilight Zone vibe.
I get where they are going with this, but in my opinion the first episode was poorly executed. It has too many ideas, too many variations of one great story, that do not translate to another good story.
I'm not mad, just disappointed.

I am an animater myself, so I can probably say this looks fantastic, the voice acting was great.
But
It was a gushing paced episode, I do understand that they just crammed a 2 hr movie in 25 min but still.
Nlg I felt bad for Steve, when Peggy went away. When it should have been the opposite.

Weak episode, weak start. The only difference between captain america: the first avenger and this episode is that peggys the one who took the serum instead of steve. Otherwise is exactly the same story.
The animation wasn't that bad but certain scenes could've been better.
Some voice acting was terrible. Hayley atwell is difficult to understand sometimes and her tone was lacking emotion. Dominic cooper was good. Sebastian stan had his moments, but could've been better. I don't remember the name of steve's voice actor but he was good.

Average, but in a good and understandable way.

The first episode of Marvel's "What If...?" does an excellent job of laying out the premise of the entire series through a new interpretation of the First Avenger. However, if you're looking for something new and weird from the first episode, this doesn't have it. Besides Captain Carter, there are some small deviations, but this episode largely just recycles the First Avenger in terms of plot. This episode closely resembles the first phase of marvel. However, I still found the episode fun and entertaining as most of the phase one movies are and the lack of weird and new concepts is understandable given that this is the first episode. This episode is meant to draw you in for future installments. Even though this is meant to be an anthology, I'd love to see more of Captain Carter and her universe as there are so many new possibilities with changing marvel history through Captain Carter.
My favorite part of the episode though has to be the animation. Every frame looks like a hybrid 2D and 3D painting. It reminds me a lot of the artwork that inspired Star Wars Rebels, but here it looks way better.
Overall, good episode, great presentation, hopefully this is the start of something amazing!

The story, animation & dialogues were impressive! But felt that things were a bit rushed! This could have been a really good episode if it was around 60/70 minutes long. Hope that they would do Justice in other episodes. <3.
Cut Captain America Paste Captain Carter

I was hoping to see a completely different storyline like in Episode 2, not a storyline where characters were simply swapped. I understand there were few elements that were different from the movie like we saw 'Champion of HYDRA', but essentially story was same.
WOW!!!!!!

I went into this with low expectations...I'm and very glad that this episode exceeded my expectations. Amazing animation. Love how one small decision can change so much. And Jeffrey Wright is perfect in this role.
This one episode took everything good about the first Captain America movie and put an even bigger and better twist! The ending!!!!!! AHHHHHHH!!!!!!

The animation is not like the modern animated movies, it's kind of old movies of Disney like Tarzan & The Lion King. It was looking smooth and glowing.
It's fast paced. Many may not like it, but what I like is that the writers have included only the important and memorable parts from the movie. If they kept all of these then may be it would have been boring. Loved the way they concluded the story and connected it with The Avengers.
Available on Disney+ Hotstar.

This does not work...

The first episode of "What If..." set the bar very low. By doing a what if scenario about Peggy Carter becoming Captain Carter, the writers felt the need to condense the whole 2 hour + "Captain America: The First Avenger" movie into a 30 minute episode. This left the episode with the worst pacing I have scene in the MCU. Each scene would immediately cut to the next, with no character development or stakes, leaving the audience having no investment whatsoever for our main characters. Also, as it tried to follow each step of the first Captain America movie, the episode didn't feel like it was covering any new ground, other than giving us a different protagonist then before. I am still optimistic that the other episodes will be good, but this series has gotten off to a bad start.
What If... Captain Carter Were the First Avenger?

After all the announcements that were made regarding Marvel's television plans, the one that intrigued me most was "What If...?" This show was set to explore other realms in the multiverse where certain things happened differently than they were supposed to, and therefore changed certain key events in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Basically, this is a show with infinite possibilities and could have so many interesting stories to tell. We always knew that the first episode would be centered around Captain Carter and having now had a chance to see it, I think it was a solid way to start out this new interesting concept.
The first episode of the series was written by head writer A. C. Bradley, and while I admire the route she went with the episode, there's definitely too much happening too fast. It makes sense, as they are trying to cram a two-hour film into a half-hour episode, so I don't necessarily blame them for that, but I think that they could have tried to do something different instead of trying to follow the same beats of the first "Captain America" film. With all that said, I found the premise of the episode to be exciting and I loved to see Peggy Carter get this new boost and finally take center stage in a project of her own (that isn't "Agent Carter." Which I liked, by the way!) Hayley Atwell is good as always, although it seems like she's having a lot more fun in the character's outing this time around because of her larger role. I was also interested in seeing what the new voice of Steve Rogers would feel like, and as soon as Josh Keaton's voice appeared, I quickly eased into it and accepted him as this version of the character. I liked the unique nature of the animation, although it did come across as a little rough in certain action scenes. I'm also not sure where they'll take this particular storyline as they've said that they plan to bring back Captain Carter. I'm excited to see where they're going, but after this episode, I don't have a good sense of its direction.
"What If... Peggy Carter Were the First Avenger?" is a good and solid beginning to this new show. Despite a few writing issues and the fact that they seem a little unsure of how to handle these otherworld stories, the animation is beautiful enough and the storytelling seems to be going in the right direction.
