Uh, no

Wade Allain-Marcus has directed the reboot of 1991's "Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead." It's unclear why he bothered.

In the update, Tanya (Simone Joy Jones - fresh from "Bel Air," another retread) is seventeen and the oldest of four siblings. After a meltdown at work, their mom is sent to a resort for some mandatory R&R. Sure. Happens all the time. The kids are left in the "care" of an elderly, pistol-wielding maniac who promptly passes away. Right. Rather than bothering their mom, the kids decide to dispose of the body and fend for themselves. Of course they do. With the help of her siblings, Tanya lies about her age, gins up a fake résumé and gets a job at a company specializing in fast fashion. Uh huh. Desultory observations about adulthood, responsibility and getting by financially dribble out after that.

In the original film, the lead role was played by Christina Applegate, an actual teenager, who was in the middle of an eleven-year run on "Married... With Children." Her interactions with Joanna Cassidy, who played the owner of the fashion company, were the most redemptive elements of a film that was panned by the critics. A high-water mark was a critic labelling the film "amusing fluff." (It got a 35 score on Metacritic.) Inexplicably, the reboot hews closely to this marginal original story. The only novel element in any of this is that the family at the center of the story is Black.

The casting here is uneven. Jones, who plays Tanya, is twenty-five years old. She struggles to be convincing as a seventeen-year-old. However, her charm and effervescence give the film what little energy it's able to generate. As the two youngest siblings, Ayaami Sledge and Carter Young are cute, cuddly, chatty and clever. On the other hand, portraying the role of the lead fashionista is Nicole Richie, who has made a career out of being the daughter of singer Lionel Richie and the sidekick of Paris Hilton. With practice, diligence and hard work, her acting could someday rise to abysmal. Today is not that day. She and some of the other cast members say their lines and then pause a beat, apparently hoping for a sitcom laugh track to bail them out. Help does not arrive.

This is a film with limited aspirations that are underachieved.

More of a girl movie than a guy movie
FeastMode12 April 2024
That headline isn't necessarily a criticism, but my reviews and ratings are subjective. And this movie leans towards a chick flick. There is still some guy humor, as well as jokes that are funny regardless of gender. I laughed a decent amount and there are a few hilarious parts.

But then it switches back to girl humor. Or a romance plot with EXTENSIVE scenes on dates. There are even life lessons. Again, these aren't necessarily bad things. They're just not why I watch comedy movies.

I found the lead to be the least funny. But the three younger siblings are hilarious and memorable characters. And the babysitter cracked me up.

I had an okay time watching this. But it's probably more enjoyable if you like chick flicks or are looking for a date movie.

Jordan Ward carried
bswbkdmwd12 April 2024
Film was shocking but Jordan Wards song boosted it from a 2/10 to a 5/10. Can't go wrong with a bit of Jordan Ward. In my opinion if Jordan Ward didn't make "Player Two" for this film it wouldn't even make it to theatres because of how appalling it was. Some parts were funny but most parts tried to hard to make the audience chuckle and just failed. Might just be me but Jordan ward should have got the main roll for this film based on how good his song was. All of his music as absolutely amazing and would suggest you listen to his music than watch this abomination. Go see it if you want but to be expecting a good film.

Absolute garbage
adamant-8986320 April 2024
Another pointless remake. Remember when Disney remade Adventures in Babysitting and ruined it? Yeah well this is even worse. Not only is this movie painfully unfunny- I literally did not laugh one time- it's the definition of "pointless"... Why did they remake this movie?!? They race swap the family for no reason (oh wait, it's a BET production, that's right....) just they can exploit all the black "humor" this movie is so hard to watch. They keep all the characters names (and get rid of one of the siblings) but for some reason they changed the lead characters name from Sue Ellen to Tanya. Why??? Avoid this garbage at all costs.

This was brutal...
paul_haakonsen22 May 2024
Right, when I stumbled upon the 2024 movie "Don't Tell Mom The Babysitters Dead", I didn't know that they had remade the 1991 movie from director Stephen Herek. And my first thought was "but why?". Yet, I opted to sit down and watch the movie with an open mind and give director Wade Allain-Marcus's 2024 movie a fair chance.

But not even five minutes into it, it was painstakingly clear that this was going to suck big time. Yup, I figured that this movie would be a pointless remade that was remade solely for the purpose of being potically correct and inclusive. And guess what, my intuition was right.

The narrative in the movie was similar to the 1991 movie where writers Neil Landau and Tara Ison put together an enjoyable and entertaining script and storyline. But this watered-down 2024 remake from writer Chuck Hayward just paled in comparison. Sure, there were some fair enough aspects to it, but it was overshadowed by the looming sense of how pointless the remake was and some insanely recially stereotypical characters that just did nothing to further the enjoyment of the movie.

And even upgrading the movie to today's sad state of society and the inclusiveness and political correctness just didn't fare well on the screen. It was too forced and desperate from writer Chuck Hayward.

The comedy in the movie fell flat and I actually weren't brought to laughter even once throughout the course of the 99 minutes that the movie ran for.

I actually wasn't familiar with a single actor or actress on the cast list. And that is actually usually something I do enjoy in movies, but it just didn't play out all that well here, because of the stereotypical character gallery, annoying music and general pointlessness of the entire movie.

Wow, the music in this abysmal remake of a movie was atrocious. I absolutely loathed the music that played throughout the course of the suffering that was the 99 minutes that the movie ran for.

If you've ever watched the 1991 movie from director Stephen Herek, then stick with that one, and just completely ignore and look past this 2024 remake, because it was a dumpster fire. However, if you haven't watched the 1991 movie, then you might actually find something watchable here, I guess. I just didn't enjoy this movie.

My rating of this utterly pointless remake lands on a generous two out of ten stars. Seriously? Why remake the 1991 movie?

WHY?
jared-2533123 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
After watching that atrocious trailer back in March for this remake, I decided to watch the original 1991 film and I waited for two months for this remake to come out, just so I could rip it to shreds. Just today, I've seen the remake and I'm just baffled by this movie. Just to warn you, I will be spoiling this movie with my negatives.

Positives for Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead (2024): The remake did give me the motivation to watch the original 1991 film and I really enjoyed it. Also, Simone Joy Jones as Tanya was decent, she was the only character that I cared about and she's the only one to have some form of maturity by the end of the movie. Finally, the main relationship between Tanya and Bryan was done very well and I was invested in their relationship. That's it for the positives for this movie and now it's time for the negatives and spoilers for this movie.

SPOILER WARNINING!!!!!

Negatives for Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead (2024): This movie's plot is literally the same as in the original, the only difference in this remake is the main characters are black. The jokes in this movie are some of the most tone-deaf and worst race-focused humor that I've seen in a movie. You have Ms. Sturak who dies after the first night of her job and the main characters dump her body in a lake, because they said if they called an ambulance for her the white cops were going to shoot them on site cause they're not going to believe they live in a house. Okay first of all, police brutality against black people is definitely a problem nowadays, but the fact that you used it as a pathetic excuse for dark comedy, Screw you! At the beginning of this movie, Ms. Sturak fires a starter pistol in the air and literally says, "I've watched Madea Movies, I know how to discipline you little N-Words.", and by the way she doesn't say the actual word. That's another issue with this movie, this movie was advertised as a new R-Rated Version of the original 1991 film and with the exception of using the N-Word at the end of this movie, there's nothing Rated-R about this movie. All of the memorable and icon lines of dialogue from the original are literally in this movie without any energy, personality or impact from the original. Also, Nicole Richie as Rose was unbearably bland and wooden throughout the entire movie. Finally, there are cameos by Danielle Harris and Joanna Cassidy in this movie and both of them are pointless.

Overall, I have no idea why they chose to remake Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead, because I don't even think there's a lot of people who even know about the original. Also, the fact it was Rated-R is for reasons I will never understand for the rest of my life. All I will say is go watch the original 1991 film, because that movie at least has heart and personality attach to it. This remake will definitely be remembered as one of the most pointless and worst remakes that I've ever seen in my life.

More Colorized Kowtowing
rebeltaz-1870522 May 2024
How much money does hollywood have to lose playing to the lowest common denominator before they get it - nobody wants this crap. They are literally out of original ideas, so they do one of two things - in the words of South Park, "put a chick in it and make her ..." -or- colorize an original movie and put it out as if it's brand new; stunning and brave.

Yeah... I know.. this wasn't made for me. Awesome. Except that when we - those for whom this isn't written - don't wholeheartedly support it, it's because we're Ray Cyst. We are sick of this attempt at erasure. We are sick of this attempt at rewriting the past.

Go watch the original 1991 movie with Christina Applegate and let hollywood know what you think of this trash.

Take a guess why I had to use the language I did? I'll give you a hint - George Orwell, Nineteen Eighty Four.

Worth a watch
sirgarrykay15 April 2024
It's really funny and written for this generation without overly trying to be. The script is good and so are the jokes. It's very much a remake with so many similar aspects of the original. I love that they filmed at the same house and even used the same music. It was so heartwarming and connects both movies so well.

My only cons really is that the original made you believe it was a huge fashion job and fashion show at the end, and in this movie, it falls more flat. The fashion isn't that good and the office just seemed like a set. They didn't have the walking around the factory workers scene so it didn't seem like a full on fashion warehouse. Just seems like the budget wasn't as big so they did the best they could.

It's a worthy remake for sure. The original is just such a classic. All I know is you'll be happy to hear "I'm right on top of that Rose" in theaters.

Sooo funny

Quirky humor and lots of nostalgia from my childhood and the original movie.

Great movie for Teens and Young adults. So happy to see Nicole Richie as an actress I think she did an outstanding job on the big screen.

Simone Joy did a phenomenal job leading the way for young actress's to follow. I'm actually Going to watch again because I'm sure I'll giggle with laughter 😂 . Loved that it showcases some of the beautiful sites around Los Angeles.

I agree with this that the nyc times said

Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's DeadNYT Critic's PickDirected by Wade Allain-MarcusComedyR1h 39m Don't tell helicopter parents, but the gleefully transgressive flicks that entertained a generation of latchkey wildlings are coming back in style. Wade Allain-Marcus's rollicking update of the 1991 cult favorite keeps the plot - a 17-year-old slacker named Tanya (Simone Joy Jones) is forced to support her even lazier younger siblings (Donielle Hansley Jr., Ayaamii Sledge and Carter Young) - and amps up the immoral humor. It's a snappy, gutsy comedy about how kids are spoiled and ignorant, and yet the adult workplace is only passingly more mature.
