Beautiful Family Film
Colorscheme8 December 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I normally don't watch Hallmark films. Seeing this last night may have changed my outlook on them, though it was too bad it was broadcast after my daughter was in bed. I'd love for her to see it on DVD.

This is the true story of a young man, Brad Cohen, with Tourette syndrome who wants to become a teacher and get his master's degree. It's a very simple story made magical and engaging by the strength of its leading player, James Wolk. I hope to see more of him in other work soon. His ability to capture the helplessness of Tourette's while burning through it with his heart and charm is remarkable.

The story divides its time between Brad's struggles in everyday life with his disorder, attempting to get the teaching position, his relationships with his family, students, and new girlfriend. The script is a bit Hallmark-heavy-handed at times, but it comes with the brand. This *is* a greeting card company, after all.

The supporting cast is wonderful. Sarah Drew is every boy's crush as Brad's new girlfriend. Treat Williams is powerful and sympathetic as Brad's father. I highly recommend this film for great family viewing full of life lessons and love.

Informative, inspiring, insightful, and above all, touching
salmon_lox8 December 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Especially around the holidays, I often enjoy nothing better than curling up in a comfy chair and watching a cheesy, predictable, heartwarming Hallmark movie. However, I must say I was surprised at the quality and power of this simple made-for-TV movie. Based on the true story of Brad Cohen, "Front of the Class" follows Brad as he strives to become, if not the first, certainly one of the first and the few schoolteachers with Tourette's syndrome; throughout this narrative Brad recounts his childhood growing up with the disorder.

The movie is very insightful into living with such a difficult disorder. Most of Brad's experiences, particularly the childhood ones, are outright shocking, and rather startling to me personally, as I never realized how recently people (doctors and therapists included) have begun to understand Tourette's. Brad's teachers are ignorant of his condition and intolerant, believing him to be willfully disruptive, he faces constant ostracism in public and ridicule from his classmates, one of his mother's acquaintances even recommends exorcism. I admit I did not know enough about the disorder and learned a lot from the movie. Tourette's is so much more than just "those people who shout swear words". Brad is very upbeat, understanding people's discomfort and is eager to talk to them about his condition, letting them know that his tics are involuntary and only worsen when he is stressed (i.e. when people insist he stop making the noises or refuse to understand).

The really touching part comes when <*spoiler*> Brad is finally granted a teaching job and his second-grade students prove to be more understanding and accepting than most of their parents and teachers. Brad is a very good educator, and touches many students (one in particular, but I won't spoil any more).

I have a cousin with Tourette's, whose parents are struggling with fully understanding and living with the condition, so this movie hit fairly close to home for me. Though an tearjerker, it's never overly sappy and is rather well-acted. I was also pleased that it was a much more positive look at a disorder than Hallmark's previous effort, "Sweet Nothing in My Ear". I was frustrated at the apparent attitude of that movie that attempts to allow deaf persons (particularly, children) to hear were intolerant and insulting. Though this point is somewhat moot in "Front of the Class", as Tourette's sadly has no "cure", I think Brad's attitude was made clear when he walked out on a "Tourette's support group" full of people and their parents who have given in to their disorder and preferred to be separated from the rest of society. Instead, Brad chooses to conquer ignorance and not let his Tourette's control him. I definitely recommend it.

Interesting, Well Performed Film-However, Truth Needs to be Said.
MSaxe6 February 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Hallmark Hall of Fame movies are always interesting and heart-tugging. This one is no exception. It features fine performances by veterans Treat Williams and Patricia Heaton-they're always good. Williams makes an unsympathetic character, one easy to dislike-a human. He makes him human, you understand his feelings, his point of view. Its truth in acting-its a great performance. Heaton is inspiring and delightful. She takes the easy role of "Mom as Hero" and makes it so much more rich and in-depth.

However, the stand out performances in this are by Dominic Scott King and Jimmy Wolk as Young and Adult Brad Cohen. Both do a simply amazing job incorporating Cohens Tourettes tics into their acting. Considering the fact that this was Wolks first leading role out of college and Kings youth, its simply extraordinary. They're incredible.

The film is well written (although does it really need the dying kid?) with moments of humor, inspiration, and more. The ignorance of people is astounding, their casual cruelty towards Cohen and his syndrome shows how truly awful so-called "good people" can be when something seems strange or different to them. This is something this film does an excellent job in showing. You want to leap into the screen and pound the people who are unjustly cruel to Cohen. You want to stand by Heaton as his mother and the actor playing his brother Jeff when they stand up to people on his behalf. The film illustrates these uncomfortable and embarrassing moments for Cohen in an excellent way. It does an equally good job showing his worries when it comes to finding love in a relationship and Cohens own frustration at his syndrome. You truly feel sad for him when he tries so hard to control his tics and simply can't. Both Wolk and King do a fantastic job showing every side of Cohens efforts to handle his Tourettes and live his life to the fullest.

The film is well edited, and is directed well. I really have no complaints about any technical aspects of the film.

In case you're wondering about the title of my post-I knew Brad and Jeff growing up in St. Louis. We went to summer camp at Camp Sabra in the Lake of the Ozarks in MO. together, and were in BBYO together as well. Both of them are a few years older than me, so I never really got to know them well at all. However, I have observed Cohens Tourettes in person and its not always as extreme as it was in the film. I admit, as a young kid (9-10) I was sometimes scared and frustrated by his tics. However, when I learned that he couldn't control it-I was shocked and felt terrible. I learned to get used to it and expect it when I was in a place with him. For the most part, both he and Jeff were pretty cool guys. Though sometimes, they could be jerks. Especially Jeff-he was something of a bully with a chip on his shoulder as I remember. But as I have learned-that's just being human-and especially being a teenager. We're all jerks sometimes. I knew that they wouldn't show this in the movie, so its not like I'm crying "J'accuse!". I just wanted to put that out there. "The more you know" you know. Regardless of what I think about the "real" Brad and Jeff Cohen, its a fine TV movie.

What Cohen has done with his life is a great story-worthy of Hallmark Hall of Fame. I just wish as an actor, I could have been in this movie or at least auditioned for it. Its a major bummer because its a good film about people who I have actually met.

Considering that Wolk was practically just out of college, had never had such a large role in a film before, was working with two seasoned vets like Heaton and Williams, and is maybe a decade or so younger than the "real" Brad Cohen, I am even more impressed with his performance watching it again than I was before.

A nice family film, and a great true story.

with a person with tourettes, this movie moved me.
video_game_lover_1228 December 2008
one word to describe it. Wow.

Front of the class is about the true story of a kid with tourettes who's lifelong goal is to become a teacher but has to overcome his obstacles with tourettes. with a dad that never accepted him as a son, kids who don't know anything about the desease and all the things in between but what made this movie great was the determination to not only people with tourettes or a disability but people who dog you by saying your no good for this or you will never amount to anything. the movie has good acting and the determination that goes along with the movie and the cast is top notch. this movie has heart, and with a guy that has tourette syndrome, i could relate and it kept me keeping all hope going and pursue my dreams. defiantly worth a watch if your curious about tourettes, or just a great drama that sucks you in.

10/10. HIGHLY recommended.

Fantastic Movie, and even better person
jlclark4417 January 2009
Warning: Spoilers
We had the great honor and pleasure of meeting Brad at a weekend long retreat for families dealing with Tourette's that he hosted over Halloween weekend, our 6 yr old was diagnosed last spring. He is truly an inspiration, and the movie only scratches the surface of how wonderful a person he really is.

As for the question of if he makes the noises that often, from the 2 1/2 days we were around him, yes it is that often if not even more often.

In the auditorium scene if you look you will see a quick shot of a teacher in a white shirt and tie standing in the back, that is Brad. He was only able to stay for a minute so his ticks didn't interfere with the movie.

Very good, inspiring
vchimpanzee8 December 2008
In this fact-based story, Brad Cohen has Tourette's Syndrome. This means he makes noises involuntarily, even in places like school, where he would be expected to behave.

Early in the movie, with James Wolk narrating, we first see Brad as a child in St. Louis, played by Dominic Scott Kay. Brad is picked on by other children and told to behave by his teachers. Since he can't control himself, he is constantly being sent to the principal. His father Norman (Treat Williams) has divorced his mother and still believes Brad should work harder to control his actions. So mother Ellen (Patricia Heaton) must raise Brad and his brother Jeff (Charles Wyson) pretty much on her own. Ellen does research and finds out there is a name for Brad's condition, but no cure. The one thing Brad can do that pleases his father is play baseball, where rude noises are tolerated.

For the first part of the movie, the scenes of Brad's childhood alternate with those of the adult Brad, played by Wolk, who is living with a roommate Ron (not a real person, I found out, but a composite of several friends) and trying unsuccessfully to get a job as a second grade teacher in Atlanta, where his father runs a construction business. Norman wants Brad to work for him, but Brad is determined to prove he can make it as a teacher.

Young Brad finally finds a school that will accept him. The actions of Principal Myer inspire him not to give up, and he is determined to be a teacher unlike those who mistreated him.

But finding that job won't be easy. Though Brad demonstrates a great deal of confidence and determination and has a winning personality, and even though he succeeded as a student teacher. No one wants to take a chance on him. But Brad pushes harder, even as financial considerations force him to work for his father--doing the dirty work on job sites. Finally, Brad hears from Mountain View Elementary. They actually want him! Jim Ovbey (Joe Chrest) is the principal, and Hilarie Straka (Dianne Butler, who reminds me of Patricia Routledge in appearance) is the assistant principal who actually hired him. Susan Scott (Helen Ingebritsen) is his mentor.

But it still won't be easy to get through the first year. Some parents are uncomfortable with him. There are students with problems, but Brad has the ability to deal with those. After all, he too was a problem student, and he learned from his disability.

Will he succeed? Well, if he didn't, would you be watching this?

Oh, Brad also wants to have relationships with women. Can he do that too? What do you think?

I predict an Emmy nomination for James Wolk. It's not just that he effectively shows Brad's disability, or that he seamlessly integrates it into what seem he makes like normal conversation. He shows a very confident, very determined, easily likable man, in a way that would have made his performance a winner even if Brad had been like most of us. And he is an excellent teacher and loved by his students, who are also effectively portrayed.

Patricia Heaton does a very good job, partly because I didn't even know who he was. I know her mainly from "Back to You" and clips of "Everybody Loves Raymond".

Mike Pniewski has only a few lines, but as the principal who changed Brad's life, he is outstanding.

Sarah Drew does a very good job as Nancy, the girl who accepts Brad as he is and may go on to be more than just a girlfriend.

I only have one criticism. Does Brad really make those noises THAT often in real life? He says it's mainly when he's nervous, but I think the writers could have cut back a little when he wasn't.

This is definitely worthy of the name Hallmark Hall of Fame.

Very well done movie
rjwilson2-131 May 2009
I was looking for other movies that Dominic Scott Kay had done and stumbled on this one and I bought it and then I remembered seeing advertisement for its airing, but sadly never watched it.

This was the best movie I have ever seen and have never heard of Tourett's Syndrome. the acting was superb from everyone even to the little kids. Jimmy was great and really looks like an older Dominic. We loved Dominic in the Santa movies and on NCIS as the boy scout.

I will only support the Tourette cause, I hope the real Brad Cohen stays happy and is a true role model for anyone with disabilities.

I hope you will do a follow-up movie. I would like to see more from Jimmy and of course Dominic.

Superb hard-hitting drama!
carter101-120 July 2009
I came home from work today, switched on my TV and randomly put a film on, and it happened to be this, and i was instantly drawn to it! this genre of films usually doesn't get me interested but the main actor, was fantastic, the adult version of Brad Cohen was excellent in his role! and you instantly liked him,the film develops well and you get to know the characters quickly and efficiently. I also loved the relationship problem between brad and his dad, just to make you feel even more sympathetic towards brad. There are some sad scenes that can make you upset, but there are superb scenes which have you laughing! i would highly recommend this film! 10/10

It makes me moved
a-787381 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
What moved me most was his persistence and positive attitude towards life, which moved me a lot. I once imagined that if I were like him, I might not be able to stand the torture and hide at home for the rest of my life. But brad did not. He was always working hard for his dream. In fact, each of us can be the first, as long as you want.

Very Inspiring Story
jb_campo25 December 2015
My wife told me I had to watch this movie with her because of how good it was. She was right! Front of the Class tells the inspiring story of Brad Cohen, based on the real life person. Brad (played by TV actor James Wolk) grows up in a broken family after his mom and dad divorce. Since his youth, Brad started making uncontrollable odd noises at random, with no ability to control them.

His Mom, played wonderfully by Patricia Heaton (Raymond TV series), won't take the doctor's diagnosis of basically no explanation. She digs and digs and discovers Tourette's Syndrome, a neurological disease, with no cure. With unbelievable love and patience, much like Sally Fields in Forest Gump, she supports and encourages her son to pursue his dream of becoming a teacher.

Brad goes through a tough time that demonstrates the ignorance of supposedly educated human beings as he interviews over and over for jobs in the education field. He has all the credentials from his studies - he needs a break.

The film nicely weaves back and forth between the young Brad dealing with people not accepting him then, versus adults not accepting him as he's an adult. I can only imagine how frustrating this must have been.

The movie also weaves in a complicated father/son relationship, nicely delivered by Treat Williams, a very strong performance.

The ending will have you cheering, so yes, Hallmark movies are sappy. But this one will give you a nice warm heart. It's a perfect holiday movie to pick up your spirit and give you hope for a better world.

See Front of the Class - you will enjoy it!

Front of the Class is the inspirational story of Brad Cohen, a man who does not let life's challenges get in the way of his dreams.
walidmcluffy4 May 2014
Front of the Class is the inspirational story of Brad Cohen, a man who does not let life's challenges get in the way of his dreams. Brad Cohen has Tourette syndrome, a neurological disorder that makes him twitch and make noises constantly. As a young boy, he was made fun of and put down by his classmates and teachers but decided to grow from everything he had endured. Despite all the bullying he endured during his childhood and the trouble he went through with his father, Cohen was determined to live a normal life. He maintained a positive outlook. He decided that when he grew up he was going to be a teacher who would encourage all students and show them that you can do whatever you put your mind to. As an aspiring teacher, I found this movie to be extremely motivational. Brad Cohen found ways to learn and grow from every experience he had. He teaches life lessons to students when they don't even know they are learning the lessons and always finds a way to inspire. Brad shows students that no matter what difficulty they may have in life, they can always find a way to overcome it and be a better person because of it. As His unwavering determination and fiercely positive attitude conquered the difficulties he faced in school, in college, and while job hunting. Brad never stopped striving, and after twenty-four interviews, he landed his dream job: teaching grade school and nurturing all of his students as a positive, encouraging role model. Front of the Class is a very eye opening story. There are so many people in society who don't respect or accept others with disabilities or who are different, it is heart breaking. Brad's story made me realize how anyone can make the best out of any situation. He acknowledges that every person has their own problem or difficulty and tells everyone not to make excuses, to accept the challenges and to grow from the experiences. Never once does Brad blame anyone or anything for Tourette syndrome and is an incredibly strong human being because of it. He made me realize that everybody has obstacles in their life, but it is how a person responds to that obstacle that defines them. When I become a teacher, I want to make sure every student has the chance to learn, and be themselves. PS: if you are Ali A**r, i knew you would google it. you should reconsider trusting us

This movie hit a little too close to home for me
megz34868 December 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This movie hit a little too close to home for me. I don't have Turourtes Syndrome, I am however a Stutterer. I am currently going to school to become a high school English teacher, which scares me to death. Like the character in this movie, Brad Cohen, I am very open about my stutter, and i have felt a lot of the same emotions when dealing with ignorant people or people who tell me that i CAN'T do something because i am not "normal" (whatever that is). I thought this movie was excellent in capturing the emotional aspect of a neurological disorder and i feel as though in my case, as well as in Turourtes, there is not nearly enough knowledge for the public and if they continue to make movies like this one, then perhaps we can have a few less ignorant people in this world.

Even Better than King's Speech
princebansal198224 May 2011
Both "The King's Speech" and "Front of the Class" are centered around speech disabilities. The former around stammering and latter around tourette syndrome. I loved King's Speech. Especially in terms of acting, It is powerhouse but I loved this movie even more. It is much more realistic, and without the big obvious dramatic moments that are present in King's Speech.

Nothing is represented as a do or die situation and there is a strong undercurrent of humor throughout. While tourette has a big affect on anybody's life, the main protagonist Brad Cohen is an elementary school teacher which really complicates things.

A very inspiring story, in a lot of different ways. Whether it is the reason why he chose to teach, or his interviews for the job, or his interactions with his students, everything about the movie is humorous, touching and sublime all together at the same time. This movie remained with me for days.

P.S. I know that Hallmark has a reputation for making sappy films but I can assure you that this is not like that.

Loved this movie, but...
danhughes-111 August 2009
Warning: Spoilers
1. Frequently in films where the same character is shown as a child and an adult, the two actors bear little resemblance to each other. In this movie, the two actors who play Brad as a child and as an adult looked remarkably alike.

2. Young Brad seldom smiled, and often hung his head in sorrow/self-pity. The older Brad never quit smiling and laughing. The personality change was perhaps a bit too much?

3. Before I watched the movie, I said to myself, "A Hallmark Hall of Fame movie about an elementary teacher. Hmmm. Bet one of the cutest, most vivacious children turns out to have a fatal disease." Sure enough.

Goodness, folks, the film twanged our heartstrings aplenty without THAT.

A film that can make a dead man back to life
jithinkm-107 July 2016
I don't normally write reviews, I was not planning to write one for this. But after watching this a few days back, I couldn't help but write, this by far is one of the most inspirational movie you will see. I just loved the smiling face of our hero, whatever happens with him he has that smile and he has his companion. I would recommend everyone to watch this movie at least once, if possible more than once.

I am not going to dwell into the nitty gritty of acting or directing, because i found everything coming together in the movie. Best thing i felt was that it was all based on true story, it welled up my eyes and i was crying my hearts out all through out this movie

A young man overcomes the handicap of Tourette to become a teacher.
TxMike24 June 2009
Warning: Spoilers
This is a really good story and made nicely into this TV movie. It is based on a real person. We saw it on DVD from our public library.

Jimmy Wolk is grown up Brad Cohen, new college graduate, attempting to get a job as a teacher in Atlanta. He knows it will be difficult because most school administrators don't believe he can be effective in the classroom with his verbal ticks. But he doesn't give up easily and vows to apply at every school in the greater Atlanta area.

Also very effective is young Dominic Scott Kay as the Young Brad Cohen, perhaps 10 or 11. We see the difficulties he has at school and also within his family. For years the doctors missed the diagnosis, they just thought he was hyperactive and made noises for attention. Only Patricia Heaton as his mother, Ellen Cohen, believed her son. On her own she went to the library and read medical books until she came up with Tourette.

Brad's family was fractured, he grew up in St Louis while his father, Treat Williams as Norman Cohen, re-married and moved to Atlanta where he was in the construction business. Acceptance by his father was always an issue with Brad.

Dating was always a problem with Brad but when he met Sarah Drew as Nancy Lazarus things turned around. She accepted him for who he is, a very smart and generous person, and they were able to build a life together.

A very good movie, even though I was sleepy when I started to watch it I never became sleepy as the movie played.

SPOILERS: Brad eventually received a return interview and at a progressive school was hired as a 2nd grade teacher. He discussed Tourette openly when his students asked and allowed them to ask any question. Not only was he accepted and loved by the students, he also was able to reach a young troublemaker and turn him around. At the end of the school year he was chosen as the best rookie teacher in the state of Georgia.

Good movie
lti999 December 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This was a really good movie. Well acted, directed, and written. Although his condition is funny at first, you feel sorry for him. Inspiring movie. There were times when I wanted to shed a tear or two. It really makes you think that when you think you have problems, this man really had issues. Takes you into his mind and what it's like to have this condition. This guy even went out and got a degree in teaching. After he gets his degree, he goes out and looks a teaching job, which is not accepted because a lot of people think he is weird. He eventually tells them his condition and they relax and learn that he is a normal person. I'm surprised nobody else has commented on this movie.

Film that can teach us all
jgw32129 November 2009
The story of Brad Cohen's determination to be a school teacher in spite of his Tourette's Syndrome.

I always have a problem with actors playing the part of someone with a handicap, I find it harder to relate to them than I would to someone with a real handicap. After the initial recognition of a handicap in someone, it fades away into the background as you get to know the person. With an actor playing a part it is somehow always in the way, no matter how well they play the role. For me this always spoils the enjoyment in such films, no matter how well they are made.

This film is no exception, there are some cheesy bits, but there is a lot of good acting from the whole cast. I will only pick out one for mention, Sarah Drew playing the girl friend not a very major role, but very well acted. She came through as a thinking, caring young American; like the sort of original founding Americans, full of ideals, spirit and hope for the future that we saw in John Adams.

There are some very moving moments, but overall it is an upbeat film. It was worthy of an 8 were it not for the distraction of the ticks, ironic as Jimmy Wolk has in fact portrayed just what was required; he shows frustration and anger but always with hope and exuberance shining through. It is really my fault that I find his performance distracting, as that was the whole point. I just feel that I would have enjoyed it more had Brad Cohen played himself.

Best Handicapped Film Since The Miracle Worker - Front of the Class
arthur_tafero14 September 2023
Yes, the film is a bit corny and goody-goody, and yes, it does resemble a Disney production. But in the end, it will make you a better person for having seen and understanding it. Tourette's Syndrome is not a joke as it is portrayed insensitively by South Part and Cartman; it is an incurable, miserable, handicap that requires an extremely resilient personality to withstand. Brad Cohen was that type of person; one who fought "his companion" tooth and nail for his entire young life. If you can't get inspired by this film, then there is probably very little in life that will ever inspire you. Like the films The Miracle Worker and My Left Foot, it is a story about beating overwhelming odds to gain entry into that most common of all societies; the every-day person of the work world. It is amazing what we all take for granted. After seeing this film, you might appreciate what you have in life a little bit more.

How strong and persistent we are?
allanallansantos19 December 2020
I liked this movie and recommend it cause it shows that no obstacle can stop us to achieve our dreams. For Cohen, the dream is to become a teacher, and for me, it could be any other dream. This story teaches me to persist and never give up. It's a beautiful motivation story and at every step that Cohen walks, in his trials and (a lot of) failures we can reflect and question ourselves: How strong and persistent we are in the pursuits of our goals?
