A cracking mystery.
Sleepin_Dragon28 January 2021
Neville lands up in hospital, a murder happens, and he doesn't see anything.

I thoroughly enjoyed this, a very original, entertaining and amusing episode. This had a cracking start, very good development, and one of the smartest conclusions I've seen on the show for some time.

There was a real streak of cleverness here, some very strong characters, and I'd suggest a very strong episode for Neville, once again.

This one definitely got the better of me, I certainly didn't guess the outcome, it will keep you guessing until the end. The dance scene was very uplifting.

It's nice to see the commissioner and Catherine, both gettting lots of screen time, unbelievably it feels as if both long serving characters are still growing.

Overall, I loved it, 9/10.

TV's so much better not in black and white

Warning: Spoilers
I must admit I was dubious about Death In Paradise being renewed for a 10th series. Series 9 had been a steady downhill slide of plotting and characterisation - or total lack of it in Madeleine's case. Then conversely and even worse we were subjected to a mass of hideously annoying neuroses and quirks in Neville.

The first episode seemed to confirm my worst fears with being more of a proving Neville right about whodunit and recycling two plot devices done to death. However, since then the programme seems to have had a new lease of life.

Neville is much improved and at last the dry comic genius of Don Warrington is being used to its full, brilliant effect. Although Marlon threatened to be an OTT irritant a la Ruby in his debut episode, he's actually quite funny and Tahj Miles already very assured in the part.

Yet the comedy value has increased in line with and not to the detriment of drama value. For the second week in a row it's not been a black and white case of bad killer, good victim.

Of course you can't go around playing God like Lulu did, especially when there are other options to save your life. But certainly I could identify and sympathise with her desperation to free Taylor from what was essentially an abusive relationship. Well done to the writers for showing women can be the aggressors in one, too and every bit as much controlling bullies as male equivalents!

Another good episode

Thankfully after a sluggish end to Series 9 (not helped by the phobias of Neville and the wooden nature of Madeline) Series 10 has, after a bad start, regained its form again.

Neville has been toned down, Florence being back is great, and the mysteries have been engaging.

I thought this was another very strong episode, with the teaser for next week looking like it will continue this run.

Clever mystery

Warning: Spoilers
I've said before that I pretty much judge these episodes on the strength of the mysteries, and by that standard this one was quite strong. The behaviour and motivations of not only the murderer but the other parties involved was entirely believable, and the way the murder was committed was mostly plausible (although the suicide note was a bit of a stretch). Once THAT moment arrived - you know, where the DI makes a mundane observation that suddenly gives him the epiphany that solves the case - I was immediately able to piece the whole thing together based on all the clues presented earlier, which had previously seemed incomprehensible. Very solid all round.

A fun episode

The murder case and its conclusion is not so much the main reason why this episode us so enjoyable. It's the balance in the current team. Excellent, great acting, good directing. Just a tiny hour of fun!

Episode 10.4

One of the reasons I think the tenth series of Death in Paradise has not soared so far. There has been a restricted guest cast. This might be due to Covid restrictions.

So there have been episodes where it might be just a couple of suspects who could realistically be the murderer.

This episode is no different. However it features a clever locked room mystery.

DI Neville Parker gets bitten by a bug while getting to play beach volleyball and has a severe reaction. He is rushed to hospital.

The nurse looking after him is found dead. It looks like a suicide but Parker is not convinced.

For a start she had made preparations for her ward round. She was also looking to move away from the island.

However the nurse was in her room and the door was locked.

Underneath it was a tale of greed and a clever switcheroo between the victim and the murderer.

A very good episode!

Warning: Spoilers
"Death in Paradise" has been one of my favorites series for quite a while now. The tenth season of this show is quite good so far with only the premiere of the season being average at best. This episode is easily the best episode of the 10th season (so far) and easily one of the better entries of "Death in Paradise" in a while. It's not amazing, but manages to be very strong indeed.

Let's start with the good aspects, shall we?

. The production values are great as usual. The direction is beautiful and the music fits the scenery as usual. The acting is good too. Tobi Bakare, Josephine Jobert always give heartwarming performances. Tahj Miles is very likeable as the new police officer and it's nice to see Ralph Little settling down in his role of Neville Parker without being whiny or annoying. The guest stars are pretty good too.

. The mystery is one of the most complex in the recent years. There are some really clever red herrings, twists and turns. The humor mostly works. Seeing JP and Marlon singing was tons of fun. The solution to the mystery (Lola is the killer) was very satisfying as well.

But....

. Not all the characters are very well fleshed out. Joshua being the one, whose storyline did not bring something of merit and felt in the sidelines.

Overall, a pretty strong episode.

8,5/10 HK.

"Come on Freddy it may not be a murder case, but do you mind helping me track down that frog?"
ygwerin118 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
DI Neville Parker's innumerable ailments not to mention his quirks and idiosyncrasies, may have abated somewhat.

But they are not the end of his troubles, as island pursuits go beach volleyball should be way down the risk list.

But not for our hapless Mancunian DI, if anything is going to happen to anyone, then he seems to have his name on it.

He even managed to end up in the local infirmary in a bad way, such that it was the worst case the doctor had ever seen of the sort.

DI Parker can't even get a break from work in hospital and anyone superstitious may even have imagined, that he actually attracted Murder almost like some form of magnet.

Parker had barely managed to get himself admitted to the hospital when, Nurse Dena Johnson dies from circumstances suggesting suicide.

Commissioner Selwyn Patterson is determined to ensure, that DI Neville Parker follows the doctors orders to the letter.

Of course he should have known better than to expect anything of the sort, especially from the accident prone DI.

But even the enigmatic Commissioner could, scarcely be expected to foresee Parker's every move.

Very clever ending
safenoe2 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A very clever ending that had me wondering to the very end. DI Parker managed to redeem himself at the end with his incredible problem solving instincts.

I sometimes think about Aude Legastelois-Bidé, who played Madeleine Dumas not long ago. Was she unceremoniously dumped from the series?

Steve Edge plays patient Freddie Archer, who unwittingly helps DI Parker solve the case. For some strange reason, Freddie looks like one of the Simpsons characters but I'm not sure which one.

Worst Series Since Kris Marshall Era
jamiecmay24 February 2021
Tried several episodes of this series ; but keep giving up. I believe new producers and writers? But stories are threadbare, chief inspector increasingly sidelined and plodding Unimaginative plots. So disappointing- looks like it has run its course.
