I would never have guessed that Dita was holding everything together all by herself. Once she's gone, Miguel and Emily both fall apart, Emily to drugs and Miguel into a second teenage persona, while Cristobal suffers the worst because both his parents fall apart completely. Felipe goes to bed and stays there for who knows how long and Coco turns junkie.
Of course, that's just the way it looks because the writers failed to present a coherent story. They had failed once before at the start of Season 2 by just pretending that viewers somehow just knew that there had been a catastrophic wildfire that took Miguel's house and nearly killed Dita. Whether the writers dropped the ball or the showrunners cut them off at the knees with terrible editing, this has happened with both change of season premier episodes.
The change to Season 3 also included a closure of the border (which has never happened in history since the Mexican Revolution except for the 12 hours that the border was closed after Kiki Camarena was abducted and murdered). The team calling the shots on this series just goes off into fantasy land in order to move their story along between seasons.
