Entertaining, yet just more of what we know
Drank229 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
American Horror Story really does know how to do flashbacks, it has always been one of the series strong suits.

However, this episode was missing something for me. We don't necessarily learn anything new of substance (a few minor explanations ie: coat choices, side effects of the pill), and the plot doesn't move forward as this episode is set entirely 3-5 years prior to the previous ones. The episode rather dives into more of what we already know.

Regardless, it is still an entertaining episode and it was fun to see how certain characters got to where they are now.

Frances Conroy really steals this episode, with the best scenes being the ones she is in. Even though Kathy Bates was originally set for her role, I'm glad Frances was able to take over as she does it wonderfully.

I feel like Evan Peters character (Austin Sommers) could have had more of a backstory, but perhaps it wasn't necessary as it would have probably gotten repetitive (another starving artist).

I'm hoping Billie Lourd's Lark has some more significance in the last two episodes as for now her talent does seem a bit wasted in this role.

I do agree that some of the acting was a bit off this episode, though not from anyone in the main cast. The singer who turns into the pale person, I'm pretty sure was hired for his ability to contort his body and behave like a 'pale person' as I think he's the guy in the audition tape that Ryan Murphy shared on social media a while back. Thus, his line delivery is a bit 'meh' at points, but overall was still believable.

I think the low 8s is a fair rating for this episode. Just wish it would have taught or shown us something new and exciting instead of showing us the pieces that most of us had already put together in by now.

FRANCES CONROY BETTER WIN AN EMMY
camilosantiagox11 September 2021
Frances conroy's acting skills are amazing, she gives what Jessica gives in the early seasons. She steals the season, without a doubt, double feature is the best season since hotel.

The Chills Keep Coming
JoshuaMercott11 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
All our favourite "AHS" stars were up to no good in this heart-racing episode. Things were truly turning colder, in the scary sense of the word, with Angelica Ross enjoying plenty of thrill-filled screen-space as The Chemist.

Revelations and sinister goings-on came to light. I can honestly say the writers - Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk - kept the chills coming in the captivating fourth episode of "American Horror Story" Season 10.

Titled "Blood Buffet", this instalment in the "AHS" S10 lineup was well-paced and gradually unfurled the 'root' arcs of various characters.

It was exceptional to watch Belle Noir's (played by Frances Conroy) plot-arc unfold in all its pitiable brilliance. How she was and what she became following The Chemist's 'help' was equally unsettling and crafty. Frances gave a wondrous and compelling performance.

Leslie "Lark" Feldman (played by Billie Lourd) carried no extra screen-presence in this episode compared to what she'd brought earlier. However, the moments that did feature Billie were capital. She gave a performance both casual and sharp.

And just when I thought this episode had given me all the 'bloody' juice it had left, Austin Sommers (played by Evan Peters) took me by complete surprise with his pre-pill 'origin story' arc. Evan did a great job, more so than in previous episodes (and he was quite good in those).

This episode ended with a neat 'wrap' of where everyone was before the mysterious pill, and a while into it. S10E04 "American Horror Story" on Disney+ Hotstar ended with the death of a drag queen, but this series (so far, and counting) has not dragged one bit.

A Great Flashback Episode
corinneppierson9 September 2021
American Horror Story is too often a hit or miss with their seasons. Some are too boring and drawn on, others have too many storylines to pay attention to one. Double Feature is different. With the right cast and stupendous writing and plot, this season deserves in my opinion as many Emmy nominations as early seasons.

Angelica Ross is gorgeous onscreen- with the Chemist being such a morally intriguing character, it's hard to not like her even if she is bringing doom to the entirety of Ptown.

Frances Conroy deserves millions and millions of applauds from every corner of the globe. She completely STUNS me with every appearance and I adore the very conflicted views Belle Noir's backstory brings me to have (similar to the chemist).

Evan Peters is always a marvel but Austin in drag- honestly one of my favorite AHS moments overall. The amount of ease Evan always puts into his roles will forever be a cemented foundation of the show.

I wish this episode was longer and we got to explore everyone more but I have a feeling the next couple weeks will c r u s h me and all other longtime fans.

FRANCES CONROY!!!!!
bspwkbg9 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
What more do we need to say about her? She's the star of this episode. Angelica Ross' hair is simply perfect and she's gorgeous in her dress style, Culkin is too cute wearing that hairstyle, Evan is , also a feast. Love this episode. Love Denis O'Hare and Billie Lourd, tho I do agree that their roles are a bit underused, and the mean people in this episode are too stereotypical and predictable. Still, the great outweighs the weak points. Next 2 episodes are very promising , so pumped for em! AHS always has the magic of making me want more, despite it's inconsistencies, but few are flawless, let's simply enjoy!

Little black pills
yzsnfcg9 September 2021
Very interesting take on the history of where these pills came from, seen through a variety of different people in town. Frances Conroy did very amazing this episode which I enjoyed throughly. Excited to see what the last episode of the first feature will have in store.

Good context in the form of a flashback episode
awessel-5811710 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
From a writing standpoint I liked where they placed the flashback episode to give more context to the story. Loved the backstory of how The Chemist, Austin, Belle, Lark, Karen, and Mickey came to know each other before the Gardner's came to town. The story of how Belle becomes successful and separates from her toxic husband is also very satisfying. Wasn't the best episode but I liked how it gave more backstory to how the pills became a thing in P-town.

Frances Conroy is the best
najwanimri15 September 2021
This is definitely my favorite episode of the season, I usually hate the flashback chapters in ahs, but here they passed. Frances Conroy's performance is splendid, and she deserves a dozen awards.

The backstory episode
jstew-6866111 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Basically every season of ahs has had an episode completely dedicated to backstory and adding more context to everything happening and this one was a standout thus far for season 10. The acting in this episode is so strong and it provides interesting context to some of the side characters we've seen throughout this season. Overall, a standout episode of season 10 up to this point. I'm very intrigued to see where this story finishes up in a few weeks and how/if the alien story connects.

Bored
dpoland-765899 September 2021
I hoped the season would've started offering something new or intriguing by now. The premise of drug / creativity / vampire is just not fun or interesting. At least I get a dose of Frances and Angelica; each delivering solid performances. Other than that, this season continues to underwhelm.

Important backstory here
katewalsh8310 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Ever since the days of Nip/Tuck, Ryan Murphy has always done incredible flashback episodes, and this is no exception. Here we get to see how The Chemist began her operation and how her first subjects fared upon taking the little black pills - one became a success and the other was patient zero for the pale people. Brilliant all around. Also, Evan Peters in drag - need I say more?

Terrible episode, Angelica Ross can't act!
hnt_dnl9 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Of course as soon as a Ryan Murphy led show goes past it's seasonal halfway point, the season loses steam. It happened with Seasons 5, 6, and 9 of AHS, Season 1 of Ratched, Season 4 of Glee, you get the picture. Now past the halfway mark, Season 10 of AHS produces it's first blemish with this episode BLOOD BUFFET. This flashback episode started out somewhat promising with a nice scene of Holden (once again, Denis O'Hare chewing scenery) showing the house to the newly arrived Chemist (played by Angelica Ross, more on her later), then there's more good stuff with the Chemist recruiting Mickey (Macaulay Culkin continuing to excel) to find test subjects for her black pills. Also there's Frances Conroy displaying good acting. That's it for the good stuff and thus my only reason giving this turd episode the extra star.

The rest of the episode is so cringe, boring, predictable, and terribly acted. What were the writers thinking with Belle's 1-dimensionally mean husband? His dialogue sounded like a middle schooler wrote it. It's like they made him 100% terrible almost so we'd sympathize with Belle in the present. There wasn't a drop of subtlety with this guy. The actor playing the first pale creature was weak, too. Then there was the embarrassing acting in that scene at the drag queen club. Not only were the minor actors bad, but Evan Peters was bad too! Everything about this episode screamed filler, reminiscent of that trash Valerie Solanas episode halfway through Cult. So the Chemist makes black pills, recruited Mickey to be her leg man, got Belle and Austin hooked on them, they become talented and turn homicidal. You know where I've seen this before? With Harry, Alma, and Mickey in the first 3 episodes! Absolutely nothing of relevance to the actual plot happened.

Now to Angelica Ross. She is simply not a good actress. And I first realized this in the 1984 season. Her "acting" consists of mannered speech with either unconvincing emotion or no emotion. I never feel like I'm watching a 3-dimensional character when I see her on screen. What's really sad is that the rest of the main cast has been great, but she's the only blemish and low-key is ruining what was on its way to being one of the best AHS seasons. The silver lining is that the final 2 Red Tide episodes will focus back on the actual main characters, so this filler flashback episode may end up being a bump in the road to what could still be a great season. Sadly, this incredibly weak episode will probably be the one keeping it from being perfect.

This is one of the best episode of this season so far. I loved that everything, well, almost everything, was explained from the beginning. Some acting scenes were not convincing but it's just a minor error which didn't stop me from enjoying.

Good, perhaps rushed
landerdevos10 September 2021
I really liked the backstory. The episode flew by. One could argue if we really learned something new. I still think this could lead to something. The episode should have been 10 minutes longer tho in my opinion. The ending was kind og rushed. However it's still really enjoyable and well written, acted and directed.

Best episode so far...
PizzaQueen071213 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Loved learning about how Belle came to be and how she embraced the unleashed creativity regardless of the "side effects". Austin was THE worst drag queen ever. It was so bad, it was hilarious to watch his performance on stage. And, now I know why the untalented wear those jackets with the weird shoulder pads. Also loved the part about how the Black pills came into existence. Don't F with the Chemist.

Oh a release from the boredom of the last episode.
zingara-7891611 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Finally I really care about the characters. I liked the first episode then I got angry and bored. Not just at the show but at myself. I wanted to have empathy for the child and her selfish father. But oh, I had none. I was angry because I wanted to feel something for that family being a mother... but I felt nothing because they were so arrogant and weak. Now this episode, ahh, the back stories made me feel something. This is the best episode of season 10. Love, love Evan in drag. EvanFrancis.

A first for me
wotcherscamp29 April 2022
This is the first season that that side characters are far more interesting than the main characters. I could have done with a lot more Belle, Austin, Karen, and Mickey than the Gardner family.

S10.E4 - The Past [9/10]
panagiotis199318 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
(S10. E4) My Live Reaction / Review for American Horror Story Season 10 Episode 4 ''Blood Buffet''. The previous episode was good and I gave it a rating of 9/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. The chemist seems like an interesting character. I like how in this episode we see how this whole pill thing started. Belle Noir was so innocent and sweet. The pill completely changed her character. Austin used to be a drag queen, lol I didn't expect that. I love how Belle Noir and Austin met each other. Usually I don't enjoy episodes that show the past but this episode did it pretty well. Overall this episode was good and I enjoyed it. My rating is 9/10.

A better look into the character of Belle
einoriuks16 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This was a great backstory episode! It's sad to see that no one in this season really is a villain since they're all tragic in some way. Loved the way Belle and Austin met as well and the episode pretty much answered all the questions about the pills.

Warning: Spoilers
This Episode begins with The Chemist, it is five years ago and she is looking for a house. Belle tries to sell her books, but it is not a big succes. Belle meets up with Mickey at The Muse. Belle killed Ray with a piece of broken glass. Belle got a entire new look, she bought it at Lark her shop. Austin and Belle drink a glass of alcohol together. Belle gave a black pill to Austin. Nice Episode of American Horror Story Season 10, a really good Episode about how Austin and Belle got friends. Many blood has been spilled this Episode, ready for more. This Season is all about the vampire story, really cruel!

Just not good
ic-4674310 September 2021
Was hoping for the best and this is the worst. I tried to come back to AHS after I stopped watching for a couple of seasons and alas it hasn't gotten any better since the first 2 seasons. Sorry. I give up. The only bright spot is "Candy" from Pose. That's it.
