Admittedly, season 5 had a slow start (at least by this show's past standards) but it finally seems to be finding it's footing and returning to form. This episode exploring the tragedy and hope of Nicky not only is one of this season's best, but it sits amongst the strongest in the series.

I love Nicky

Some of the best episodes of this show are the ones about smaller side characters. It is so interesting to see these characters get the attention and dimension that they deserve. The actors who play Nicky are both wonderfully vulnerable and heartfelt without over-doing it. Just really, really well done. P.S. When the snow globes broke, so did my heart, and I've yet to pull myself back together.
The best episode! You two are my moon

Talk about a whirlwind of emotions this is by far the best episode of the season. Nicky tortured past and divide of being the good son and staying for his family to wanting his brother to forgive him. A beautiful story.
A wonderful tiny work of art...

One of the best episodes of the season. I loved it. The scenario is incredible. Touching and endearing. The production is still beautiful and the songs were wonderful. Incredible scenes of poignant and thoughtful dialogue. Wow! This series is simply amazing from A to Z.

I have said it before, and I'll say it again - Uncle Nicky is my favorite character! He is a deep and complex character and that's what makes his storyline so captivating. I love it, I love him. And the actors that play him are wonderful!

As someone who suffers from anxiety, depression and tends to seclude myself.. man. I was wrecked after watching this episode. I think this episode may be the winner for what "This is Us" episode made me cry the most. Phenomenal, beautiful and heartbreaking.. in the best way.
What a great episode

Nicky is one of my favorite characters . I can relate to him so much esp with all the heartbreak he's been thru and how stuck in place he feels. But, sometimes decisions have to be made to take one small step forward like he finally did this ep. Learning more about him as his story unfolds is good. TiU is def one of the best tv programs on right now because of how careful the writers are crating these stories that the audience cares about & the lessons they learn throughout the ep too. 10/10.
An episode all about Uncle Nicky....and it was beautiful.

A life less lived

Love to the Nicky's out there. Viewed as weak, imperfect, insecure, self beat up. Maybe Jack's one imperfection- the hurt you endured made you tough and resilient, but have empathy for the ones who just didn't have it in them to pull themselves up by the proverbial bootstraps. A lonely life for the one that survived.
One of my favorite episodes of the series

Some of the episodes this season I didn't like that much, but this episode completely blew me away. Uncle nickys experience of loneliness and heartbreak is something I think so many of us can relate to, especially during a pandemic. The end of the episode had me in tears thinking about how fragile life is and those moments with people we can never get back - truly amazing writing.

Best Episode of Season 5

After the first couple of times we meet Nicky as an adult, he quickly became my favorite Pearson. In this episode, you see and feel the spirit of the US in 1969 and the uncertainty of it in the Covid madness of 2021. If you love the character of Uncle Nicky, his flashback story surrounding the first moon landing and meeting his first love, and Nicky pre-Vietnam lifts you up and breaks your heart as you see part of what led him to be the isolated, alcoholic in the old trailer. But your heart is also lifted as you see the recovering alcoholic in his new trailer overcoming so many of the challenges he's battled since Vietnam. Doing things he hasn't done since the days of the first moon landing. Overall, it is one of the most heartwarming episodes this show has produced, especially in terms of Nicky's story. The present day and flashback sequences also correlate beautifully surrounding the birth of the twins, and it's got a great soundtrack.
Great ep - but one little annoyance

The Uncle Nicky arc is terrific. We wonder if Randall now also has long lost uncle somewhere in Louisiana.
This was a great episode - but - we would have liked to see even a single reference that UN also has two other grandchildren in the same city - including another newborn. Maybe in the next episode.

Nickie's Episode
Hitchcoc16 May 2024
This episode is so sad and so charming. Madison answers the door and there is Nickie. When he found out that one of Kevin's children had been named after him, he did all the uncomfortable things necessary to visit. He even creates a gift which has a tragic end. We flash back to 1969 at the time of the moon landing. Nicki has great interest as he hangs out with his dysfunctional family. He is working at a vet clinic and meets a young woman and falls in love. Unfortunately, due to his lack of self, he throws the relationship away. He also hopes to see Jack, but loses courage there as well. We know his war history. The scene with the new twins is priceless. His entrance into the family hasn't been smooth. He meets Miguel and they are at great odds because of Nickie's preconceptions. Don't miss this episode.

Great episode. Very relatable. SPOILER ALERT * nicky's story always breaks my heart because he spent so much time trying to redeem himself and I wish Jack would have given him a chance to do so, at least to explain himself and what happened at the war. I think it would have been good for both of them and the children. The speech he gives to the babies at the end is very moving. One of the best characters and well interpreted. It always makes me think of how old people may be lonely and small gestures may make their days. It was cute that he made presents for the babies himself. I hope he finds happiness.
