Look what the Woke have wakened
Goingbegging23 April 2021
Any man who calls himself an actor is meant to be out there pulling down statues or daubing them with crude slogans, along with Vanessa, Julie and Emma. What can be wrong with this fellow Laurence Fox, making common-sense appeals to the boring bourgeois? Just not one of us...

It all started on the BBC's usually relaxed and informal late-night show Question Time. But a Woke heckler (later found to be a plant) declared that Fox was not entitled to an opinion about race, on account of being white and privileged. The result was anything but relaxed or informal - Fox was stung into launching a new political party to 'reclaim' freedom of speech in the British tradition.

For the American market, the excellent Peter Robinson devotes his incisive Uncommon Knowledge programme to Fox and his campaign to topple Sadiq Khan as Mayor of London. Robinson apparently believes that the Woke agenda is a passing fad that would soon blow over without Fox's intervention. But a quote from Khan suggests otherwise, with Orwellian echoes that could hardly be more disturbing. For Khan has declared a new category of non-criminal offence that can be logged on your record for life - any sign of a tendency towards so-called 'hate crime' mentality, as revealed in your Twitter or Facebook dialogue, however casual.

Along the way, Robinson very sensibly questions what is meant by 'working class' in modern England, traditionally the less-educated, now a catch-all rallying device for minorities or misfits led by students and professors (the over-educated). We are also shown how Meghan Markle has bullied the Queen into seriously considering the appointment of a Diversity Czar at the palace over her claims of royal racism that have only had the effect of rendering that word virtually meaningless - which suits Meghan fine. Because Meghan is firmly in the religion business, up there in the pulpit, with the congregation sitting properly and not questioning the gospel. (She wouldn't last two minutes in Parliament.) That chimes with Fox's claim to have been not just ostracised but 'excommunicated' from media circles. Next stop the Spanish Inquisition...

Well, Laurence, I'm sure that many of us are wishing you luck in the forthcoming election. But if you do still call yourself an actor, could you try to remember those breathing lessons you must have been trained in, and (please) find a way round that particular lip-smack effect that is so off-putting to spectators - and voters?
