In my opinion this episode was pretty decent. It wasnt great but it wasnt bad and with everyone saying theres no flash you have to give grant gustin a break he works like 15 hours a day so lets have this one episode without him.

Brand New Year, Same Old Flash
demigodshmurda10 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Writers, I'm going to ask you a question, and I want you to answer honestly. Do you think I enjoy writing negative reviews of this show? Because honestly, I really, really don't. This show used to be so good, but looking at it now... I don't think I really realized how far the show's fallen until I watched this episode, because we live in a world where an episode like *this* can be considered "good".

Also, no bingo this week. If I remember my record correctly, I'm 2 and 4 right now. I'd add "Bad Writing" to my bingo card, but that would make it too easy, and I'd get essentially two free spaces.

Let's start with my biggest confusion of the episode. That temporal wave from the beginning of the episode was from Barry setting the timeline back to normal at the end of "Armageddon, Part 4", right? That means that Barry made it so the timeline no longer had any anomalies in it. If that's the case, why are there suddenly anomalies in the timeline? Some of these, to me at least, don't feel like anomalies. Jay being alive, and being married to someone else in this timeline, yeah, I can see that. But Joe was alive in "Armageddon, Part 5" after Barry fixed everything, right? So then Joe being dead in this altered timeline in this episode (which seems to be a running gag so far this season) is an anomaly. Okay, so what caused it? It wasn't Thawne, since Barry erased all anomalies in the timeline, and depowered him at the end of "Armageddon, Part 5". But it couldn't have been Bart and Nora, since they only went back in time to 2021, not 2013. The episode tries to act like Bart and Nora caused this big change in the timeline, but that simply can't be the case according to how all time travel logically *should* work. But I guess after the absolute trainwreck that was "Armageddon, Part 4"'s time travel logic, this show's time travel is permanently just whatever the writers want it to be, whenever it's convenient for them to change it. This leads me to the conclusion that this show just shouldn't do time travel anymore. I know I'm not the first person to say it, and that's not exactly a hot take, but if the writers are just gonna keep making up rules for it, then we have to draw the line somewhere. Why not here?

My next major point of contention this week was the introduction of Avery Ho. I don't think we ever get her last name said on screen, but this is pretty clearly some adaptation of Avery Ho from the Godspeed storyline. First off, I'd like to ask the writers to refrain from introducing any other characters from that storyline after what they did to Godspeed. And secondly, I have one major issue with this character. Where the gosh darn heck (I'm censoring myself because IMDB's been really draconian about certain words being used in their reviews in the past) has this girl been? If she's researching time travel, why hasn't she been a bigger deal! Maybe Avery's research wasn't a big deal in 2013, but this is a post-crisis world now! The Legends of Tomorrow are out in public and the fact that they time travel is common knowledge! And yeah, maybe they dispelled some of those theories in season 5's "Meet the Legends", but in "Crisis on Infinite Earths: Part 5", Marv Wolfman says that Flash and Supergirl constantly team up with the Legends of Tomorrow! Avery's research would be a *massive* deal in our current 2021 timeline! So where has this character been this whole time? I'll tell you where, she was at the Flash writers' favorite place to hang out, Retcons-R-Us!

If we had to introduce a character that needed to help our time traveling speedsters, let's introduce a young Tracy Brand, since she was instrumental in stopping Savitar during BOTH of season 3's major timelines. Or maybe the kids just go ask someone who actually knows how to handle time travel related problems like, oh I don't know, any speedster with half a brain! Go talk to your father, or uncle Jay, or uncle Wally (assuming Keiynan Lonsdale's "I could quit the Flash if I wanted to" lyric in his Rainbow Dragon song didn't prevent any future appearances), or Jesse Quick (assuming she's alive on Earth-Prime since her suit was in the Flash museum). None of them are options? Okay, well how about we go talk to the imprisoned Reverse Flash that doesn't have his powers anymore in 2049, or at Argus in 2021? Sure, he's an evil psychopath, and we did already go down this road in season 5, but he knows more about time travel than anybody else on this show. Maybe we go outside the realm of speedsters and go talk to Booster Gold, or Sara Lance, or really any member of the Legends of Tomorrow. Go talk to Mick Rory, he's not as stupid as people think he is. I'd go on, but I'm sure you get my point. There's plenty of people the twins could go ask for help, so they didn't need to retcon in some new character that makes the timeline of this show all messy again.

Also, Bart moving at super speed isn't picked up by a camera in this episode, which further confirms that these writers aren't the same people that were working on the show in season 1. I already pointed out in my review of "Armageddon, Part 4" that Speedsters have always been able to be seen by cameras, so yeah, I guess this episode confirmed that that's not a thing anymore.

As for Bart and Nora traveling back in time to cause the Royal Flush Gang to get together, that's a time screwup that actually makes sense. Definitely explains how the RFG got together when Barry was still in his Coma. The RFG isn't as fun here as they were in "Armageddon, Part 1", but it is explained. Honestly, this episode gets some of its time travel stuff right, and some of it very, very wrong, and it seems like the writers can never decide if they wanna do a time travel story well or not. For example, we see Iris and Eddie meet for the first time in this episode, I went back want watched the Flash's Pilot episode, and yeah, everything checks out there. It's weird to see, but it actually makes sense with what happens in the show's earlier episodes. The logic of time travel on this show is completely inconsistent, and further evidence that the writers should probably move away from it.

On the topic of Eddie Thawne though, what a complete waste of the character this was. I only have one question, and it's for the show's PR team. Why even bother hyping up Eddie Thawne's return if you had absolutely nothing new for him to do? Make him Cobalt Blue, you cowards.

For those of you that don't know, in the comics, Cobalt Blue is Barry's twin brother Malcolm Thawne. They were switched at birth, and Malcolm believes that Barry stole the life he was supposed to live. Now let's take Eddie. Eddie and Barry aren't related, but Eddie is a member of the Thawne bloodline, and if you really think about it, Barry is living Eddie's life. Eddie was engaged to Iris, now Barry and Iris are married. Eddie's sacrifice went completely unknown by the CCPD, but Barry got awarded a medal of honor. Whether Barry intended to or not, he *stole* Eddie's life! I'm just saying that the origins are clearly there! I don't care about complete comic accuracy (unless the adaptation of the character is in name and name only, like Godspeed), but when the parallels and setup are so clearly there, there is no reason that the writers shouldn't at least *attempt* to capitalize on them! Come on! It's right there! Do it! Make him Cobalt Blue, you cowards!

And then we finally get to Bart and Nora. And oh my god, Bart Allen is just the worst! Jordan Fisher is a really likeable actor, and was genuinely pretty great casting, but he just plays an objectively horrible, detestable character! Yeah, we get it, he's impulsive, it's in the superhero name, but the writers take that to the extreme and make him seem like he has no common sense! And the result is that NORA comes off as the RATIONAL one, because while she's certainly got her own problems, she at least takes the time to assess the situation and figure out what the best course of action is! If these two get a spinoff, I will complain on the internet.

Also, I don't know if the crew intended it or not, but when Bart leans up against a pillar in this episode, the goggles on Bart's suit move up slightly. It makes the suit look really, really cheap. Maybe something to look out for in the future.

Oh yeah, and there's a retcon to Joe and Cecile's origin as a couple here. Neither of them had any interest in one another until season 3 at the earliest, but now it starts here because the episode didn't reach 40 minutes without it, so we need something to fill time. Also, Cecile basically screams "All men are jerks", and let me remind everyone that this episode aired the day after International Women's day. Wow, CW, I don't think you could've been more subtle if you tried!

Overall, this episode was bad. Should I be surprised? No. Am I surprised? Kinda, yeah. I thought that Armageddon was a step in the right direction, even though the event itself couldn't decide if it wanted the episodes to be good or not, so I figured this episode would follow suit and... It just didn't. And with Superman and Lois and Naomi both going on break for the next two weeks, meaning the only show I'll be watching will be this crap, I think I need to make some adjustments to my bingo card, and beg Disney to release Multiverse of Madness early. This episode really does go to show you that nothing ever changes for the better on this show. Brand new year, same old Flash.

5 / 10.

Where is the flash We want Flash's original stories, and the related ones.

If you go back in time, what's new about that?

Repetition of similar events.

Ranking every Flash episode: Impulsive Excessive Disorder
lbramson21 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I don't get the insane hate for this episode. It's not great, but it's decently fun enough. I understand that we waiting 3 months of a filler episode that has nothing to do with anything and barely features the MAIN CHARACTER. I get it. But I thought the episode was just...fun. Bart and Nora are a lot of fun to hang out with for an episode even if it's completely inconsequential. I thought the ending was good and the part when Bart saves Joe was cool as well (despite this being the second time Joe does THIS SEASON). The little timeline changes and Eddie Thawne's return are fun to see, even if they don't mean anything in the grand scheme of the season. The Royal Flush gang still suck as villains though. As far as filler episodes go, we've seen much worse.

It's alright, not amazing. But Eric Wallace has to step down for this show to be great again.
prometheus1987010 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I know how other reviews have put 1 stars because there is no flash, but i thought everyone pretty much knew that 3 months ago.

About the episode, it's decent. Bart and Nora keep screwing the timeline more and more. We see origins of the Royal Flush Gang, but the dialogues are horribly written for them.

The Avery storyline.... I'm interested to see where it goes and how it impacts later in season. Avery is some sort of genius who is researching about time travel and all that. Bart and Nora take her help to keep the timeline correct. Interactions between Nora and Bart is pretty good.

Now the inconsistency I find here is that WHY do these speedsters from the future need help from Avery. Nora and Bart know more about time travel than anyone in that period of time(2013).

Even if they wanted help, they could have gone to thawne. I know that probably could have made things worse, but we know that thawne is careful with the timeline and knows how to operate it, plus he isn't a crazy maniac in 2013-14 like what we saw in Armageddon.

So that option was there but the writers decided that illogical plot armor was the solution. Overall: 7.5/10, can be rounded of to 8. I'm still hyped about rest of the season, although I'm pretty sure I'm gonna be let down a bit like with this episode.

Also, the CW has to make Eric Wallace and the current writers to step down after this season.

They have these brilliant ideas which absolutely hypes everyone up, but let us down with its execution. Creativity and Execution are needed by the showrunner, but Eric Wallace lacks the execution. What even happened to the darker storylines of the flash(season 1-3)?? They NEED DARKER STORYLINES, not some random fun stuff. How hard can it be to introduce a darker storyline?

I hope after this season, they do step down and a new fresh showrunner and writers are introduced. If season 9 is gonna be the last season, at least make that amazing with a new writers and showrunner that way we could have a proper closure!

Boring ...
maria_gr-5614411 April 2022
If you think people like Flash's kids so much, then do a spin off.... Armageddon was more than ok and now we're back to the show being almost impossible to watch. And how many times will they have to say "no messing with the timeline" to actually end up doing exactly that, so they have to go back and change what they ruined?

I don't get why there is so many low ratings
Kenjislamberry18 March 2022
Going into this episode I thought it would be not be good and hit or miss like the previous seasons interlude episodes . I ended up enjoying it . There is a lot of references to season 1. This episode redeems Nora . She is nothing like the pre-crisis Nora. I like the sibling dynamic between Nora And Bart. Jay also appears in this episode . He has a great dynamic with the kids. This episode marks the return of the real Eddie Thawne. Rick Cosnett previously appeared as the speed force taking on his form in season 3 episode 16 "Into The Speed Force" . Overall I enjoyed this episode its a huge improvement over the previous interlude episodes . If you loved the earlier seasons you will love this episode . It also setups Eddie's return for the later half of the season . 8/10 great episode.

It's time to be cancelled
doubl_d200510 March 2022
If the show continues this way it might be better to cancel it. Why every tv show this days tends to become a soap opera? So much drama, so much bad lines, so much bad ideas. What happened to all the good writers? All the shows have the same direction.

Childish writing and no flash
gangan-3977511 March 2022
This was a good way to start off the season but also a very boring, childish episode. I loved Edie, joe, and jay in this episode. I still don't like Jordan fisher as Bart, why does he have nail painting?? The writing was also very childish and not enjoyable. Absolutely no flash in this episode even though the show is called the flash. Is it bad to say I only care for grant gustin. I will never understand the inconsistency of time travel in this show but whatever. Again this episode was a fine start up but could've been way better.

Fun but illogical
pauli_gomez20 March 2022
I liked this episode. It was fun, full of easter eggs and references to the show's beginnings. And with appearances of characters I like, But time-travelling speaking, it makes no sense. They did a lot of changes in the timeline, like villains beginning their run before their time, and they did not seem to care for it at all.

I wish this show just forgot that time travel exists. It only complicates things.

What was that??
jp757012 March 2022
After several months on hiatus, the Flash comes back not with a bang, but with what look like a "backdoor pilot" for a YA spin-off. In a show based on comic book characters, this episode was the single most cartoonish one yet, looking like something for the kids section of HBO Max. For a series with declining ratings, this is not an encouraging sign.

definedrdcg10 March 2022
This was boring and Flash free! Why are the producers continuing to ruin this show? It's such a soap opera and PC! This is just the worst writing and producing you could think of. Just end this now if you're going to continue to ruin The Flash's name!

Decent episode to kick off the rest of season 8
b_yocum10 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It was nice to have the Flash show back after 3 1/2 months, and it was a decent episode to come back to. Despite not having the Flash in it, I did enjoy seeing some returning characters, especially Eddie Thawne! I feel the main downside to this episode was it felt a little childish and cringey at times. I did love the relationship and interaction between Nora and Bart, and seeing Nora being the mentor now is some great character growth. In terms of action it was fairly lack luster as the main highlight of the episode was Nora throwing away the bombs, which did look very cool btw. Overall this episode definitely had some dialogue flaws but was a good start to whats hopefully a good rest of the season!

And I waited 3 months for this...?
mahir-9686312 March 2022
This was just overall boring. If you didn't had the time to watch this episode, don't bother. I mean I love the character from Nora and the actress plays her quite well, but Bart is just soooooo boring and the actor is sooooo not funny or good. The plot was kept very simple and boring and there was zero to nothing action or drama in it. I'm here to watch the flash and not a wanna be flash who's name is after his fathers name. Normally I would have gave a 4 or 5, but after 3 months I expected something and I didn't get anything but a boring 39 minutes with a tiny tiny 2 minutes frame of some good tv, when grant Gustin and the rest of the original cast were on air.

Why the bad reviews?
jacksonflash12 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Quick Recap Bart and Nora come back to the future after the Godspeed war from Season 7, they realize they screw up the timeline by Jay Garrick coming back to life and not dating Joan Garrick but Rose Garrick, So Bart and Nora run back to the December 31, 2013 and they meet Eddie Thawne, and by doing that they screw up more by interacting with people from their family's history. Bart saves Joe West from getting shot, and the queen notices it so she has the idea to start the royal flush gang sooner than later. So the royal flush gang start a casino heist, Bart and Nora ask Someone they met from the coffee line(Avery) how to stop the royal flush gang, they destroy the bombs and save everyone at the casino heist and they go back to 2049, turns out Jay is still alive and won't die as of now.

Review: This episode was amazing, it focuses on the siblings of The Flash and it takes a break from Team Flash and the present (2022). Jordan Fisher and Jessica Parker Kennedy's acting ( Bart and Nora) was so good. They gave emotion, they gave story. It was honestly awesome to see all of it play out, I feel like this episode will also play in future episodes because Iris's hairbrush at the end went away, foreshadowing that there are gonna be big changes to the timeline which I'm really excited for. I feel like the reason this episode has sort of a low rating is because it doesn't focus on The Flash, but that isn't a problem in my eyes, I see it as potential for future episodes, we don't even know but we may see characters from the show's past, (we may not) but it's very exciting and I'm so excited for the future of season 8 of The Flash. This episode had so much potential and in my book it was amazing to see that potential play out because it was amazing In my eyes. There are a little flaws to it like maybe some of the script but all of the positive aspects of this episode out way that little piece of negative aspect so 10/10, very magnificent episode.

What a shame

For a very long time i wait for flash

And then what i saw was disaster

This show disappeared for more than 4 months ! And it returned with a deadly weakest episode !

Such a shame ! You ppl with these scenarios have completely ruined this tv show !

I suggest you this season 8 must be last season !

If they renew it for season 9 it doesn't worth to watch it !

Even now doesn't worth to watch !

Excellent episode - what a Flash filler should be like
theshade-91110 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The writers realized that timeline changes after travelling in time isn't exclusive to main characters. This episode features Bart and Nora where 7x18 left off, after which they find out that they accidentally created their own "flashpoint". The couple isn't able to fix the timeline but learn to live with it which parallels with Barry's and Jay's backstory. The pep talks are kept at a minimum and we get to see Eddie Thawne again. There might be a couple small issues there and there but the episode has a build-up for the storyline and characters develop as the story goes on. Most people just assume that the episode will be bad because it doesn't revolve around the flash, while I do agree that there are some episodes, which didn't include the flash, that should have included him but this isn't one of them. Afterall, the two main protagonists are the flash's children and speedsters.
