Murder (#6.10)
ComedyFan201015 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
There is a reason to worry in the office and Michael keeps everyone distracted with a game.

The accents were pretty funny, especially Oscar. Michael making this game was also pretty sweet, as he said this was the hardest he has ever worked. The dating thing between Andy and Erin was also a good part of the episode. And loved the ending with Pam also being part of it.

Better Episode in a Dodgy Season
bkkaz5 October 2022
Season Six of The Office began to reveal how the writers were losing sight of the show's trajectory. Notice how Pam is treated -- toward the end of the previous season, she had come to admire and even been grateful toward Michael after his artful maneuvering to get their jobs back and promote her to salesperson.

Then the wedding happens, which though a long time coming, nonetheless rounded out much of her character arc. But in Season Six, she's suddenly on the warpath, having forgotten everything Michael has done. On some level, that makes sense because of his treatment of her mother, but the fact that she's not in the least conflicted shows the writer's basically tossed out anything in terms of continuity. She's also rather disdainful of both Andy and Erin earlier in this season, which makes her character less than flattering after year of build up.

But this episode returns to some degree of character development that makes sense, just with Michael. The point after that first season is not so much that he's an idiot but that has life has been filled with disappointments and mistreatments, only some of which is the result of his needy personality. Those wounds continue to take their toll, resulting in someone with, if not a personality disorder, some profound quirks.

But Michael isn't stupid. He tries too hard to punch above his weight and, of course, usually fails miserably. Ask yourself if his frat boy antics would be rejected so easily and so often if he was actually more of a frat goy.

In "Murder," he's childish because how could he not be. But there's method to his madness. The often-cruel joke played on Michael is not so much that he doesn't understand people but that people reject him and therefore nothing he really does is going to impress them. But Michael was Dunder Mifflin's best salesman and, even under his chaotic watch, runs its best branch. It makes no character sense that he's so clueless about people.

And in this episode he isn't. I won't spoil too much, but let's just say Michael shows he understands psychology a lot better than people who tend to look down on him.

And that says a lot.

Absolutely sublime

Warning: Spoilers
"Murder" has a great arc that sets the dynamic between the co-managers in a time of crisis and shapes the way they communicate with the others.

The density of jokes is really high, and as cherry on top: the awkward phone call with David's assistant is one of the better "Michael phone calls" this season.

There's Been A Phenomenal Episode

I don't understand the low ratings for this episode. Makes no sense. I'll say I think the southern accents were supposed to be terrible.

This episode is pure. It's unique for so many reasons. This episode covers so many storylines from Erin and Andy to the next turn Dunder Mifflin. And Michael uses something ridiculous to teach Jim about management. Lots of different themes of The Office packed into one episode. One of the best of the show.

This whole episode was just bad for me. I get what Michael was trying to do, just forget or we can even say run from problems as he usally does. But it wasn't vibing for me.

Game Distraction
vivianla6 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The office is worried about the state of the company and that they may lose their jobs. Kelly says what if they never see each other again.

Michael takes out a game and gets everyone to play in the conference room. We see everyone's acting skills in this episode.

Worst Episode of the Series
mike_george7611 December 2022
Over the top stupid. My wife and I stopped watching episodes live after this one originally aired. Watching it again on a rerun and it's just as dumb. I get it that it's a sitcom but just utterly implausible to play a "murder" game all day in the office. The accents that seem to have bothered many others didn't bother me because I realize they're supposed to be forced and amateurish.

Much like Homer Simpson over the years, Michael Scott became more and more of a dumbed-down caricature by this point and is probably a huge reason that Steve Carrell eventually decided to leave. Painful episode to get through.

Southern Accents Are The Worst
Pink_Floyd_Fan_959 September 2022
I'm a huge Office fan and own DVD's of all nine seasons. I consider it one of the greatest comedy series ever. For the most part, my episode ratings are in line with those given by the majority of other fans - with the exception of Murder.

I'm truly surprised this episode actually received an overall higher user rating than some of the most brilliant and funniest classics such as E-Mail Surveillance, Booze Cruise, Drug Testing, Phyllis' Wedding, New Boss, The Lover, Scott's Tots, The Delivery, #1 & #2, and many, many more. I just found this episode's premise unrealistic and those terrible southern accents so over the top and grating to the point it makes it unwatchable.

Love the show. Awful, awful episode.
matt-san-12 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I get that it's a sitcom. I get that there is at times implausible scenarios that play a part in comedy. Unfortunately, this is beyond the pale. There's a very real threat of you losing your job, so you immerse yourself in an insipid live action game to distract yourself? Nope. Comedy or not, It's not internally consistent given the often grave concerns they all have for losing their job. Much like the time Micheal wilfully drove his car into a lake...nope.

I gave it 3 stars for Kevin saying "This could be a good sign" twice, and Oscar at least attempting to add some sanity to the occasion.

Totally rotten
gordonjackson-5869417 December 2020
Wtf is this utter pile of rubbish. Worst episode of a sitcom I've seen in a long time. Michael finally finally is the worst character in any sitcom. Unlikeable. Stupid. Stubborn. Unfunny. Unfunny.

WOW!!!
annamp-891461 April 2021
My husband and I watched this show thinking it had a low rating.

We were shocked. Everytime I watch The Office, I wonder if Tim Allen from Last Man Standing, could do a better job than Steve Carell.

Oh yeah!!!! We thought this show was sooooo annoying!!!!!

Thank god for the Jim character on the show!!!!!!!
