You, me and Christmas trees
TheLittleSongbird26 October 2022
Having been watching more Christmas films for a while now, since 2019 but becoming more regular each year. Namely those from Hallmark and Lifetime, with very variable success, with some UPTV and ION films too. Only got into the newly formed GAC Family films fairly recently, and like Hallmark, Lifetime etc. There are good films, some bad ones and some in between. Have liked Maggie Lawson and Christopher Russell in other things, though their work in acting and filmography are hit and miss.

'A Lot Like Christmas' is one of the in between efforts for GAC, and while it is a good representation of Russell Lawson has been a lot better in other films of hers. 'A Lot Like Christmas' was more or less what was expected. It didn't exceed expectations, but it is a long way from a waste of potential. Instead it sounded like potentially it would be a pleasant enough diversion with a number of good things and a few big drawbacks, and 'A Lot Like Christmas' turned out to be pretty much exactly that.

Russell gives a very sincere and charming performance in his role, and his character up to a point comes over as very amiable. Lawson has moments of perky charm. The supporting cast do well, despite their characters being stock and ones seen many times in similar films.

It looks good, lovely scenery and slickly shot. The music is pleasant and fits tonally enough, the placement also not getting too much.

For my tastes, Lawson on the whole tries too hard and her character goes overboard on the too eager to please side. Her chemistry with Russell isn't really there, pretty lacklustre, especially later on when the conflict kicks in and when Lawson's acting becomes particularly overdone. Also lost a lot of respect for Clay when his secret came out, a secret that was handled in a contrived and predictable way and a very mean spirited one. Which is a big reason as to why the ending didn't ring true. The conflict that it causes felt very forced.

The dialogue tends to be flat and stilted and also rather soapy in the final act. The story is one of those doing nothing new with familiar ground ones, so the predictability is excessive and nothing here feels fleshed out enough. The pacing tends to drag and the charm, light hearted-ness and heart are missing, especially later on. It is easy to predict what the ending is, but part of me really didn't want it to happen and that it would do something different but it went down the too easily resolved route.

Watchable but nothing special. 5/10.

It's a Lot
rebekahrox10 December 2021
Christopher Russell plays against his usual type as a big city corporate big wig. He usually plays rugged back to nature types. He has come to Maggie Lawson's small town to open a big box store, which threatens to put the local Mom and Pops out of business. Most especially Maggie's Christmas Tree lot. They meet and are immediately attracted to each other without knowing whom the other is. Disaster looms.

Christopher Russell is excellent in this: funny and sincere. Maggie was OK, although her character comes across as trying too hard with the hot new man in town. But really, who can blame her? He is gorgeous and nice. If not handled well however, this enthusiasm can come across as desperation. Unfortunately the story was dull with nothing on the horizon that could remotely be of interest. When she learns his true identity, she turns on him and will do anything to beat him at his own game. She commences to cut off her nose to spite her face. Christopher remains good-hearted and easygoing, which makes her antics all the more unattractive. When her little brother explains to this genius that she has bankrupted the business with all of her expenses outstripping their sales, it finally comes the inevitable sad end. Did she just blame Christopher for her own stupidity?

But wait! Thanks to her sudden inspiration of turning her farm into an event venue, the farm is miraculously saved. Like the next day. When very clueless (but still lovable) Christopher learns that the corporation he works for is based on lies, he decides the small town life is more his speed, and the romance is saved as well.

Do you like Christmas a lot?
gfrasmd9 December 2021
Should you look for originality, you may take a negative view of this film. Big business crushing "mom and pop" enterprises, business competitors attracted to one another are themes that abound in shows. This time, though, they are developed with the appropriate tones. Love and hate situations, resentments among friends, hopes and dismays are rendered soberly, therefore credibly. Maggie Lawson and Christopher Russell are a good match and make their story appealing. Good will and kindness prevail, as expected in a Christmas movie. The result is not a home run, but a solid Holiday movie, one that it may be worth watching. GAC seems to have found the thread lost by Hallmark in many of its recent productions.

Big city store come to small community.
TxMike18 December 2022
This is not a Hallmark movie but is made just like one, with the same type of story arc. Two 40-ish people are attracted to each other, a big issue gets in the way to make them leery about the other, and it all gets resolved before the end. It even has what my wife and I call the "Hallmark kiss" during the last minute of the movie.

My biggest detraction is Maggie Lawson who plays Jessica Roberts, the Christmas tree farm owner (with her brother). She isn't a particularly good actress but she has a really annoying voice, sort of a gravelly quality to it that both my wife and I found off-putting. Maybe that is why she is making TV Christmas movies.

Anyway, their little community farm, established in 1947, is struggling but the holiday season is usually a good one for them. This season a Manhattan based company has opened a big multi sales store that threatens to close down the smaller community owned businesses. But their marketing manager is a handsome, single man that takes to Jessica right away, and she to him.

The story has a good message, sometimes being where you want to be is more important than business success at all costs. We enjoyed it as light entertainment after dinner at home streaming on Amazon Prime.

There are so many cool things about this movie!
lymullen7 March 2024
I thought this was going to be yet another big-bad-executive-comes-to-the-small-town-to-ruin -it holiday movie. But in A Lot Like Christmas, the Big Bad executive is Clay Moore, who is one of those guys who everybody likes. He comes into town from Manhattan looking for a Starbucks. He asks these two elderly men that are sitting on a bench and they tell him that of course there is no Starbucks in that small little town, but there is a local diner. After getting the directions, Clay asked them if they wanted anything. They give him a big order which Clay remembers! Clay is just a nice guy who can talk to anybody about anything, buys random strangers breakfast, and helps older women with their groceries, etc ect etc

There were so many cool things about this movie. I loved the fake falling snow. The mayor was an African American woman. There was thankfully just two small town traditions. Too many can ruin a movie.

Jessica and Clay meet when she hits him with a tree she is cutting down on her family's farm. Oh and one of the things I look for in all of these Hallmarkish romances is a dance scene btw hero and heroine. After Jessica declares Clay her enemy, they have this we're-not-dancing-together dance to Jingle Bells, which was sooooo cute!!!!

And did I mention how much I loved Clay--with his lilac shirts and purple suits!

Typical small town opposes big business
MickyG33330 December 2023
6.2 stars.

Clay, a regional marketing director of a garden supply store (sorta like Home Depot or Lowe's supply center) is sent to utilize his skills in Hudson Springs, a town that doesn't necessarily respond to that sort of big business. The town is full of people who enjoy small town ideals and good old fashioned Christmas spirit. Jessica and her brother run the Roberts Farm, a Christmas tree farm in this town and they are now dealing with this rival big store that competes with their sales of trees, plants, and gardening supplies. Jessica likes Clay but is unaware he represents the superstore. He does his best to be cryptic and keep that information from her, because they are attracted to each other, and he knows it will ruin their chances at something more. When the truth is revealed it's a very big explosion of anger and seething disdain.

Her hatred for him is laughable if I'm being honest. I don't think this is a realistic response and do people do this in the real world? The whole first half of the film is the two of them barely getting acquainted and the second half comprises the war she wages on him and his company. The last two minutes is nice, otherwise this is a bland movie with a very limited plot. I had a difficult time getting through this movie and it didn't feel 'A Lot Like Christmas'. The title, is clever. They own a Christmas tree lot, ha ha. They wasted some good actors, cinematography, and music on a dead end plot.

Tidbit of trivia: the Roberts farm has an old red pickup truck used in another movie by the same actor, but in the other movie it was his delivery truck for his bakery business. About every 5 Hallmark movies, I see a house, building, street, vehicle, costume, or other object that is reused. I suppose Hallmark could do worse.

Lacks credibility
fbianco-9986222 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is supposed to be a small town so why would the residents not know a superstore had already opened and was taking business away from them, they act so surprised? Also a reporter from a TV station with the call letters that start with "K" would be on the West Coast, yet 1 minute earlier they mentioned this small town is in New York state. So that TV station wouldn't exist there.

Just didn't like this one!
hamilton_and_me20 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Spoiler Alert..........

This movie just hits too close to home on how many small businesses have gone out of business because of GIANT retailers.

I didn't like how friendly Jessica was with Clay after she knew he was there to make it successful for HGS which would mean taking customers away from her small family business. I couldn't be friendly much less get romantically involved with someone that was taking customers away from a small business I had/have that would end up closing my business.

While Jessica was keeping up with her good relationship with Clay she didn't even seem to realize (until near the end of the movie) that Clay was driving them out of business, causing her to spend more of her own money to try to get her business to survive when that didn't even help.

Clay did the right thing in the end leaving the business but it was too late to stop HGS from taking over Jessica's customers. I would had liked to had seen a TV interview near the end of the movie where Clay admitted he found out it was a lie what he told them about HGS starting out as a small family business. I would have had better feelings about the movie if he had.

I know we are all different on what we like to watch so I understand if others don't agree with me but it's just my feelings about this movie.

And yes, there are other ways for some small companies to survive and I like that was brought out and how close most of the community was with each other is why I gave it two stars.

This is the only GAC movie I've seen that I really didn't like.

Hard to watch.

He is adorable but she ruins it. I finally had to stop watching it over half way through. Casting makes a huge difference and Maggie Lawson was terrible in this part!

Can't accept this
Jackbv12311 December 2021
I am a fan of Maggie Lawson and her energy and upbeat personality. I was very pleased to see that Clay didn't march in oozing with arrogance and privilege. The character needs to be confident, almost to the point of overconfidence, but Russell didn't overdo it. Clay is actually a pretty nice guy and there is no mean and antagonistic confrontation with Jessica like so many rom/coms seem to think are necessary.

Unless the story has a special sentimental draw, I want upbeat in my Christmas movies. Tension is necessary, but this movie spends a great deal of screen time showing how small businesses and small towns are being ruined by big corporate ones. It's a fact of life. It's not an unusual story angle especially in Christmas movies, but there was too much of it in this case.

This movie diverts from the formula by having Clay's secret revealed around the half way point. This makes it possible to take an unusual tack through the rest of the movie, but unfortunately it was annoying. "It's not personal, it's business" immediately disqualifies Clay as any kind of romantic interest given Jessica's circumstances. Perhaps the appropriate response to him is "It's not business, it's my entire life". Clay has no clue. The ruined the rest of the movie for me and despite it was the only way to end this type of movie, I couldn't believe what happened.

How many times can they say holiday?
travisf-9938416 July 2022
When watching GAC Christmas movies I expect to hear the word Christmas, but this movie went overboard with the use of holiday instead of Christmas and I can't support that. Turned it off half way through. Do better GAC. These are Christmas movies. It's Christmas, not holiday.

Pretty Awful
untilnow9916 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
After minute 14 I had to call it quits. Whoever was in charge of the music should be made to do community service ---- it is that criminal. Deep ee doop doop doop ee deep. Probably the worst, silliest background music EVER. Unbearably cutesy wutesy lame.

And the acting . . . You would think, at least, that the woman from "Psyche" could do better than this. No way she was like this in Psyche. I think the writing and directing must be to blame. Nearly everyone seems like they're deliberately being hammy.

Plus ---- a big box store exec on the job drops into a hick town wearing PURPLE? Not just purple, but purple jacket and purple pants. And first thing he does is walk into a diner and tries to order Sumatran coffee? Is this guy so entirely clueless? Apparently so. Gimme a break.

Bad writing, bad acting and the music is beyond deplorably bad.

precious "firefighters"
Kirpianuscus18 November 2023
At the first sight, it deserves a lot of critics. Not only for predactibility or for huge unrealism but for waste of good parts, especially the explanations of Scott to his sister about the need to sell the farm and the good image of the clash between paseism and pragmatic present.

But the film is saved, in some measure, off course, by same , so familiar "firefighters"- Frances Flanagan,Dolores Drake and Christopher Rusell , the last in same armor of the kind guy from big city with precise mission but , in same measure, with so many virtues, making him new version of Prince Charming ( his look helps in significant measure ).

So, what you expect, step by step. And nothing more else.
