very clever, good episode
chipe20 June 2013
This is one of their better episodes. Besides being funny very often and showcasing Parson's (Sheldon) great acting abilities, I found the episode to be be very CLEVER about the tired old topic of nerdy, low self-esteem Leonard groveling for sex from pretty powerful Penny, but NO! Usually you NOT ONLY SEE this (Leonard's groveling), but you have to HEAR them all discussing all aspects of coitus -- wanting it, pursuing it, getting over it, etc, etc. Here, though, it was very cleverly well done. Since former lovers Leonard and Penny said they were on a friendship date, not the usual sex-romantic date, Leonard (and then Penny too) changed the usual routine and conversation -- like speaking his own mind, demanding his own choice of movie, hooking up with another girl while on the date. So, to repeat, I usually wince when I see Leonard and Penny speak openly and cloyingly about their love life, here it was rather fresh, different. Good job.

The second half of the episode was also nicely done -- about Sheldon trying to shoo a bluebird away from his apartment. The Leonard-Penny half was mostly clever with some comedy thrown in. The Sheldon-blue bird half was mostly Sheldon outraged at this comedy best.

Another one of Sheldon's quirks... Amy is jealous of a bird.
Doctor_vanNostrand1 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Our show kicks off when a bird perches himself on the ledge outside the living room window. I can understand Sheldon's fear of birds having gone to a university where the main campus was very often invaded by geese and when considering blue jays tend to hold grudges. This dilemma sets up Sheldon's humorous efforts to scare off the bird and one of the season's few "nerds playing with toys" moments when Howard and Raj's sonic generator fractures the window. Amy jealous of a bird and another one of Bernadette's Mrs. Wolowitz moments were the among the funniest moments. The episodes only failing is the Leonard and Penny subplot where they start out hanging out as friends but wind up trying to outdo each other in terms of courting other people, not one of Leonard's greatest moments.

See Leonard and Penny go out as friends in "The Ornithophobia Diffusion" ep of "The Big Bang Theory"
tavm24 November 2011
Penny asks Leonard to a movie but since they've broken up, it's only as friends. Leonard agrees since Sheldon is too busy trying to get rid of a bird he's afraid of. Since Leonard knows he's not going to have sex afterward, he picks the movie and makes Penny pay her share. Oh, and since Sheldon has failed to get rid of the bird, he enlists Amy and Bernadette to help him...This was another quite funny ep of "The Big Bang Theory" with some new behaviors on the Leonard and Penny front. It's interesting to see them trying to change personalities to impress new potential dates. And then there's the way Sheldon changes his attitude when it comes to a potential pet. All in all, "The Ornithophobia Diffustion" was another worthy episode of this still-funny enough series.

That's a Great Bird

Sheldon has a phobia about birds, so when on sits on a sill outside the apartment, he goes bananas. He uses every method he can think of to get rid of it, including a sonic blast that crystalizes all his windows. But there is a surprise coming.

Because they can't stand to be around Sheldon, Leonard and Penny go to a movie where they have a non-date. Secrets are shared and some are quite hurtful. They have a battle of words in front of a young woman and it's pretty funny.

The Ornithophobia Diffusion

Warning: Spoilers
This was a nice episode of the show and Series Five feels like it is kicking into gear now after a bumpy start.

Pitting Sheldon, smart as he is, against a bird was a lovely plot idea, and it helps when you have someone as gifted comedically as Jim Parsons to pull it off. His snap around to being devoted to his 'Lovey Dovey' was a nice twist too.

The writers are obviously toying with the idea of a Penny/Leonard recoupling, and this storyline again was played out well. The actors who play them have such nice chemistry that you do root for them to be together.

The best bit though, as others have said, was Amy being jealous of the bird.
