An Atwater episode on Chicago PD is always good. And this one is no exception. LayRoyce Hawkins has been sensational ever since he first opened his mouth on the show. His portrayal of Kevin Atwater, a black man working in a job with an unavoidable history of mistreatment of coloured people is top-notch. He brings dignity, strength and smarts to the role.
During the investigation of a violent carjacking, Atwater accidentally shoots dead a young man whose parents are movers and shakers in the Chicago political world. Hence, pressure is put on CPD and Atwater is in a fix. He and the squad must hunt down the only witness: a bad guy who recorded the entire preamble to the shooting, then took off.
Whilst I never completely believed that things wouldn't be sorted out by the end of the episode, this was still 42 gripping minutes of television. Great performance by Benjamin Levy Aguilar as Torres in one of the crucial scenes. That undercover work was brilliant.
Barely a mention of Upton (who was a minor player this episode, unlike the last) and Voight's pursuit of the chief's kid for child trafficking, but I doubt that situation will be too far away from being centre stage once agaon.
