Nuns always add that little something to a mystery.

An Unholy Death is another excellent early episode of Death in Paradise. As I watch these early episodes I'm struck by the sheer quality, yes there was humour, but the more serious side was darker, harder edged. It's definitely amusing, but they're not sending the show up at any point, this is very, very good drama. The story is great, it sees young Therese killed by leaving a cigarette lit in her bedroom, it's a great story line, with a surprising outcome. Fabulous performances from the British stalwarts, Gemma Jones and Kenneth Cranham lead the way, but the main players are great also. I had forgotten just how good Ben Miller was in them.

A great watch. 9/10

Caroline Langrishe, famous for her role in Judge John Deed, guest stars as Laura Masters, in this episode where DI Poole and the Scooby Gang investigate a murder in a convent. Anyway, by now Ben Miller pretty much chews the screen as DI Poole, and he does so with much understatement and also respects the local culture whilst pining for a drink in a London pub warming himself up in a fireplace. Anyway, Gemma Jones also guest stars. That's what I like about Death in Paradise, having been a fan since it debuted over a decade ago. I like the guest stars as well. I'd like to see Danny Dyer, Dani Dyer, any of the Spice Girls, Jennifer Aniston, Sharon Stone guest star.

I don't believe for one minute that a nun would be smoking in bed

Back to not great!

Warning: Spoilers
After being entertained by "Death on the Plantation", I was really looking forward to "An Unholy Death". The cast looked good enough and the premise seemed intriguing as well. Unfortunately, "An Unholy Death" is not even comparable to "Death on the Plantation". It is a decent episode, though could have been way above.

Let's start with good, shall we?

. The production values are great as usual. The direction's gorgeous and the music fits the scenery. The acting is fine too. Kenneth Cranham, Gemma Jones and Caroline Langrishe are perfectly enjoyable in their roles.

. There are some clever twists and turns in this episode. The humor mostly works and really liked the homages made to "The Count of Monte Cristo".

But...

. There could have been a lot more done with the murder mystery. At times, "An Unholy Death" was quite dull and it didn't keep me at the end of my seat like the previous one. I wish the subplot about a nun and Dwayne was given more time, because it looked like it was going somewhere. The identity of the killer (Mother Ann) was not the hardest one to figure out too.

Overall, decent, but should have been a better episode.

6/10 HK
