On Death Row: Conversations with Joseph Garcia and George Rivas (2012)

*** 1/2 (out of 4)

The third episode in Werner Herzog's four-part series interviews Joseph Garcia and George Rivas, two men on death row who were a part of the infamous "Texas Seven." This group grabbed headlines when they managed to break out of a prison and stay gone for quite a while and while they were out they murdered a cop. Even though Garcia wasn't around when the cop was shot, he too was given a life sentence. It's clear that Herzog is against the death penalty and so far each of the three films have given a reason as to why the people should be spared. The point here is that Garcia didn't pull the trigger so he should only serve a life sentence. I'm not sure about others but it seems pretty clear that if you're the drive away person to a stick up and the guy with the gun kills the clerk, you're just as guilty for just being there. As for this episode, it's certainly a step up from the second one as both Garcia and Rivas tell some fairly interesting stories and especially when it comes time to discuss how they manages to escape and the various plans that they had. It's funny but Rivas explains that he only asked people to escape prison if he knew they wouldn't do harm on the outside. Then he ends up murdering a cop on Christmas Eve.
