It's Comedy Bang-Bang for 2024.
jc12018 May 2024
If you like John Mulaney and you enjoyed Comedy Bang Bang this will be catnip for you.

Oh I guess 500 characters are required. OK. So it's setup like a talk show but the guests to show up randomly and don't really seem to understand why they are there or what's happening. The live show is cut with digital shorts that are frequently hilarious and sometimes just bizarre (Richard Kind tries to score acid? What?). John takes random calls on a big old fashioned phone that fits right in with the bizarre 70's porno set they're working with. These calls are just random people completely unscripted that are treated with deadly seriousness. Why they would do this is unclear.

It's hard to look away and hard not to laugh.

Love the live format! This can give birth to our generation's new thing!
muratmihcioglu4 May 2024
I hope John Mulaney totally saves himself from addiction and goes on with this for many years to come. As someone who's been having several issues with Netflix's recent choice of comedy, this one at the very least signaled freshness in framing humor.

The opening act was great, what with the map, trivia and all... The way it was constructed reminded me of another Netflix show, a special named Red States, Blue States. It always helps to mix fact with not-so-facts to get that mockumentary taste while still establishing the grounds for what we will be experiencing.

Yeah, this show is about LA after all - the unstable nature of the format helps underline the chaotic nature of the city as well. Mulaney being laid back and not too jumpy allows the guests to roam free, which helps each in different ways. That joke by Stavros vs Seinfeld's good boy humor. Etc.

Seeing Will Ferrell in character is always great and maybe that was what elevated my score from a 7 to an 8.

Now, was it really too funny? No, not really. But what matters at this point in streaming is the mood you offer. And they did offer an original mood that brought with enough laughs.

Let's see if other episodes will be even better.

A show for people who enjoy the moment.
GliveCo10 May 2024
All the negative or confused reviewers are looking for something that they're not supposed to find: a consistent format.

The show is live, it's meant to be random, fun and slightly imperfect - almost like humans used to be. The phone calls and discussion leave so much room for improv - that's where the fun is, that's where the thrill is. We're all experiencing the show together, it's intimate, it's real, it's not overly polished or saturated like a pre-recorded nightly talk-show that has 5 hours to edit their episode before it airs.

This is a show for the people who go to a concert but leave their cellphone in their pocket and enjoy the moment.

Its perfect for a one week show
michael10008 May 2024
This show is a bit crazy, but I think that is why I like it. It's perfect for a one week show, and I love that it is live, because the craziness makes a lot more sense. I am not a huge fan of Mullaney stand up but I like this show. John has good guests and pretty good segments. It seems like they do this for the Netflix is a Joke week so they have a lot of comedians at the ready. The topic of the show works out very well. I love the live phone calls and that John always asks what type of car they drive. It's all dumb but that is usually what good comedy is. I hope they continue to do these shows annually because it's just enough.

Hilarious and well made!
rjt-8625110 May 2024
What a refreshing show! In my opinion the talkshow format has sadly been played out for a while. Modern talk shows lack the spontaneity and natural feel of what made people like Letterman so great back in the day. John has revived that spirit in his show and it is a joy to watch! Art meets comedy meets absurdism meets genuinely interesting conversation. I hope the show is rebooted, and I would love to see him take it nationwide. As a biased Chicago resident, it would be amazing to see John do a Chicago run!!

Kudos to Netflix for putting this on and kudos to the producers and writers who contributed to this amazingly quirky piece of work!

It's not for everyone. Warning: Spoilers
This is an inside view of the mind of John Mulaney. It's awkward, sometimes off putting, and absolutely brilliant. You have to be the type of person that puts a lot of value in uncomfortable comedy. These are real moments of off the top comments and opinions and it's chaos. But it's perfect for people that live in chaos and find humor in strange places.

And the musical guest are all insanely good. At the top for me is Joyce Manor. I had never heard of them until I saw them on the third episode, Helicopter's.

Don't go into this expecting anything other than weird, and you'll love it. A robot even falls off stage. Think David Lynch, but even he turned down directing because he didn't understand it.

satire, chaotic and fits the vibe of what life feels like right now
huntergqr10 May 2024
This show feels like a nyquil fueled dream that you barely remember and leaves you with feelings of longing, giddiness and slight overwhelm, and you can't exactly pinpoint why. The combination of strong satirical bits, awkwardness, nonsensical/seemingly unconnected interviews with L. A. natives, set dressing and randomly assorted celebrities (that vary in popularity depending on the decade) all come together to make something that feels very chaotic yet very charming and funny.

I personally would love to hear what the goal of this show was when it was being thought up, so that I could get a better understanding of the overall vision. But in spite of a lot of confusion, I absolutely adore this limited time live show. In my opinion, this show captures the unspecific, not talked about, awkward parts of life that everyone is influenced by.

It very well could be that I'm reading deeper meaning within something that is just nonsense and funny for no specific reason. Regardless, I've been laughing much more than I usually do at online entertainment and for some reason the chaos, craziness and nonsense of the show make sense to me and (in a peculiar way) make me feel seen.

It's an odd ball, but I honestly love it in a way that an owner loves their weird mannered and weird looking dog.

Definitely worth a watch.

What is this?
Jaffa557 May 2024
What the hell is this? Tried episode 2, but couldn't get to the end. I get it's a live show with guests and some 'funny' prerecorded segments, so there will be a few hits and misses but I was struggling to identify any of the 'hits'. One of the reasons shows are prerecorded (and live shows avoided) is all the dross can be edited out, but I feel in this case that wouldn't leave much left.

I like John Mulaney as a stand up, but this was clearly just a quick cash in, post drug rehabilitation, requiring very little effort and some favours from showbiz 'pals'.

Maybe it will get better as it progresses but I don't have the strength to give this another go unfortunately.

Unusual late night talk show... that just works
jackblandin5 May 2024
I'm a fan of John Mulaney. I'm a fan of (some) late night comedy shows. This was definitely a different format than anything I've ever seen on any late night show - but it worked. The pace is just right: switching contexts every 5-10 minutes between John Mulaney monologue, guest banter, correspondent bits, and calls from guests with funny stories.

I'm honestly shocked the ratings aren't a lot higher. I usually have a much higher bar for comedy shows than others and this was entertaining start to finish IMO. If you're expecting a more politically charged show like John Oliver's Last Week Tonight, then this show won't be for you. If you're expecting an intellectual discussion, this show isn't for you. If you want to be entertained and you like John Mulaney's humor, this show's for you.

High concept pseudo-comedy?
spmeerschaert7 May 2024
What...what was this? This show starts off with a funny monolog, then I can't even for sure tell you what happened. Was this a series of really dry comedy bits that fell flat, or a series of esoteric parody bits that succeeded in making uncomfortable comedy moments? I'm not sure and I'm not certain John Mulaney knows. He's a phenomenal stand-up comedian, and as a result, I can't believe this was an accident. So that leaves me with the unfortunate belief that this was a deliberately unpolished mash-up of bizarre concepts that have definitely not been tested before a life audience. It kind of feels like if David Lynch made a talk show.

John Mulaney is such a creative, funny fellow. Just my sense of humor.
garydeaver5 May 2024
Great first episode trying a totally different approach to a comedy show. Jerry Seinfeld is a bit of a jerk. Would have been better without him. Seinfeld couldn't stand not being the center of attention and was disruptive. Other guests were obviously intimidated by the big star comedian and didn't get their opportunity to shine. John will adjust and I expect every show to improve. Still the show moved along nicely. The prerecorded segments were the best and John's introductory monologue shined. The call ins had their moments but the general public isn't always great story tellers. Can't wait for more. My style of humor for sure.

It's just the right thing we needed
hmpmakeup13 May 2024
FINALLY! Someone understands it's OKAY to not have everything scripted, it's actually even more entertaining because you don't know what's going to happen. I honestly have laughed so hard I was holding my ribs. And then sometimes I am just like WAIT WHATS HAPPENING. Total brain bliss. I love the music, the way it feels like I'm watching something from the 80s but also futuristic. The odd phone calls are even funnier because you have no clue what someone is going to say. Finally someone who has a cool and unique show. I want 10 seasons. I am obsessed and the live audience just makes it even better.

I love John Mulaney and this is so much fun! It's over and I want more!
mkmaclennan26913 May 2024
This is a fabulous cluster f@!k! I love every chaotic moment of this show. There seemed to be a definite plan that we were aspiring to and what we received was nothing like what was intended and I am totally okay with that. A showcase of the most wonderful ADHD squirreling that still managed to stay on topic and on schedule. There are so many great guests that were bewilderingly and meanderingly fun. The call ins were derailing in the best way possible. I loved the topics and the the experts that they were able to gather. The video clips were well crafted. Absolutely delightful and crammed packed with activities! I want more!!

I'm in Dallas, TX and I drive a 2016 Ford C-Max Hybrid SEL.

Fun, new idea that should continue on in other cities!
allstarnikkip-6101512 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Okay, this was a really fun idea that mostly worked out. It was fresh, and the live element (if you watched the episodes live, made it all the more exiting, as we didn't know exactly who was going to appear). The show loses a star for not having names and businesses (with the location on the screen in words) so if someone wanted to visit the business they would know exactly where to go (for example, the bike shop). We would have to do the research ourselves from just looking up the name shown on the video. The review that lost the other star in my rating was the useless Tina and Amy sketch which didn't result in seeing Tina or Amy (nothing to do with L. A.). Also, it neglected to show the long term Venice Beach vagabonds and business people who thrive on Venice tourism. I'm a big fan of the German In Venice (look him up on YouTube), and was hoping to see him, Daisy, or some of the other locals, or even a shot of Muscle Beach. They didn't even show Santa Monica Pier. I do have to say that Mulaney is a talk show natural, and a fantastic Comic, and I'd like to see him continue with sober success for himself, Olivia and son Malcom. Richard Kind was a hilarious delight, and I'd like to see them go to the next comedy festival in another town and explore that. I hope Wang Chung's To Live And Die In L. A. song gets back on the charts and hits number 1! It was a delight to see the car digital clock hit 7 pm and the song starting up. It was great! Overall, it was a great show, and I hope it gets nominated for an Emmy! Oh, and Saymo was so cute! Best parts, were with Will Farrell as a character, Andy Samberg, Luenell (making the most of her time on the show), Letterman, and Patton Oswalt! The set was great, and too bad Schweppes didn't like their ginger ale being shown on the show!

Much ado about nothing
elluk4 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Today's first episode is not entertaining (except Jerry Seinfeld's jokes, LA map jokes and musicians in the end) none it is in any kind of informative. Looks like bunch of junkies gathered and talk about nothing. Structure of the show is also not properly organized. No offense to the host, he is handsome and accurate, but still so much to work on. Definitely won't see another episode, need to choose quality stuff to spend time of life on and there are so many other good quality Netflix products, which I would prefer instead. Netflix could produce something more talented, funny and intelligent for this budget, next time, hopefully, they will spend money on really talented professionals, who has something smart and funny to say and don't do any cheap flat jokes.

Best talkshow ever with the kind of musical guests you actually WANT to see!
qaffp19 May 2024
A truly nostalgic and heartfelt talkshow with the types of musical guests one doesn't simply get to see on any tv show (Weezer, Warren G, Beck). The host, John Mulaney, is a mixture of boyish charm, spontaneous giggles and talent at steering the conversation. One of the guests compared the show to a fever dream which i must say in an adequate analogy. Really hoping to see more seasons from this show though i might not be in luck since according to Mulaney it's a one-timer.. Special mention to whoever made those nostalgic interludes and the opening theme+video. Kudos! Wish you guys slay at the Emmys!

Is this the next gen of talk shows?
buildk7 May 2024
Skits in the episode... horrible... theme of the first episode.. coyote? Wtf? Taking peoples calls thats not interesting.. all they were doing is waste your time with nonsense. Why are the guests even there? Will Ferell was probably the only good bit. The monologue? It was good. John as a talk show host, not so good... it is live, you need someone who has done this a million times to make this a goot show. A standup comedian who only talks to the audience, now ends up talking to the guest, you need more practice. I can see him constantly thinking about things to say or giving up on things. Long pauses, hesitation.. not great... even the lowest quality that SNL has done in the past is better than these skits they put together.

Something new, funny, and very LA
prberg220 May 2024
Everybody in LA was pretty amazing. It had me hooked for every episode... I wanted to come back to see what John had next for us. The vibe was cool, and it did feel pretty LA. Which maybe won't be for everyone.. but I thought it was great. Sure... not everything worked or was funny... but when it did work, it was so great. I'll take the highs even if there are a few lower points. It was new and fresh and had me cracking up many times. I do feel that it captured the vibe of LA and was a pretty interesting look at the city. Some of the inside jokes were great.. but people out of LA might not get them. I'm sorry... but the Heat/Waingro standup was so amazing. If you haven't seen Heat.. then it won't mean as much. But a great reason to see the movie if you haven't yet.

Really enjoyed this show... Great job John!

Want to be bored and save your laughter
lrp6205 May 2024
If this is a satirical parody...it works. If not the worst thing I have watched in years. It is not creative. Similar format to all the late night shows, and Mulaney comes nowhere close to the late night guys in any way. The canned laughter seems to laugh on cue with an enhanced audience when something actually might be funny...it wasn't. In the audience...Lou Adler, what an ass, and Richard Kind who tries to make his appearance worthwhile...it wasn't. Jerry Seinfeld gets in a word of humor now and then...suggest he stays with Pop Tarts. I do not recognize any of the other strange guests but wonder if they were stoned.

So many comedians...
NullUnit19 May 2024
.. so little humor.....

The things is.. each episode is roughly 1hr long... in that hour there's a lot of exceptionally strained attempts to be funny... unfortunately, there's MAYBE 5 minutes of actual humor in each episode. Usually any humor comes in the form of some passing comment from someone on the couch, not from Mulhaney at all. Overall, Richard Kind is CLEARLY better at comedy.

I didn't find ANY of the packaged comedy bits funny in any way. Nor was Mulhaney really funny himself.

The reality is any humor comes from the unplanned, unexpected, gaffs in every episode. Or perhaps that hairpiece on the hypnotist.

I mean an entire episode with everyone wearing sunglasses?? That seemed like a good idea???

I really wonder.. do people in LA really think anyone else in the rest of the country honestly care about LA?? It's just so solipsistic and narrow in focus. It's not about comedians or "everyone" - meaning a lot of comedians - "being in LA" it's just about LA.

It's REALLY not worth an hour of your time, let alone 6. Pass on this.

OK so not 'merican so the big sellers in ep 1 don't work for me
RastaVari18 May 2024
I'm not a yank so Seinfled and Ferrell (his dubya was ok) are not a big draw for me and I'm not gonna just laugh at them thoughlessly. I mean Ray J was the most interesting and best guest... which is, um, unusual, but then he had to sit there on his own not with the other guests (is there some beef, or were they filmed in chunks coz obvs not live surely, or is it a 'culture' thing?) and the younger comic who was in the extremely unfunny skit portion was allowed one line on the couch.

I like John M and he deserves some good luck and could obvs pull in some favours so I'll try another episode but not convinced it'll do much more for me.

The editing and production are quite fun, the theme music is and announcer are great, the monologue was acceptable if a little self indulgant and the musical guests are alright, but by an large this doens't hit the mark.

Its not weird enough to be cool weird, not parodical enough to be satire and not considered enough in general.
