Something I may always find strange about the American Horror Story series is that they use and abuse Jessica Lange to the point where when it seems like her character's time is over, you are almost thankful. Not because she is horrible in any sense, hell she was one of the few good things about last season, but in Coven, I was at the point where when they pulled a "will she or won't she?" I felt at peace with letting Fiona go. But, with 5 episodes left, perhaps I was naïve to think they would really kill her off and let the rise of the next supreme happen so quickly.
Which is a topic of interest for the episode: Who will be the next supreme when Fiona does die? Currently, Myrtle has thrown her hat behind Misty since she has the powers of resurrection, which seemingly is a grander spell than many of the 7 wonders, which I still think haven't been detailed. But, while everyone stares at Misty, there is someone that seemingly is being ignored: Nan. As you have seen, the actress who plays Nan disappears off this show without a mention or even a shadow to the point she is almost as ghostly as the axe man. However, it should be noted that while our eyes are pointed at Misty, Nan's powers are developing. She uses telekinesis to open the door to Luke's home as he suffers at the hands of his mother, and there of course is the argument that whatever Madison did at Luke's home, maybe it was Nan's doing. Either way, I have a theory I'd like to share.
With Queenie on the side of Marie, and Nan still on the side of the coven, perhaps these two can be the ones who ultimately re-initiate peace between the two sides. In the beginning of the episode Zoe tries to get Queenie to return, but she isn't willing to. Madison, naturally, doesn't help the situation which only ends up pushing Queenie farther from the coven, and leaving them with a warning. However, based on previous episodes, Nan and Queenie had a decent relationship. Though not bosom buddies, if you compare how Queenie was with everyone else, at least the two could be in the same room and maybe have cordial conversation. After all, it feels almost like fate for Marie to fall and one thing which hasn't fully been spoken about when it comes to voodoo is sacrifice, and with Marie having done many powerful spells, and the announcement of Lance Reddick as a "voodoo Satan" it seems she maybe soon paying the piper.
Overall though, I must say that while the show's second act thus far is good, I want something truly major to happen. At the end of the episode they try to do this, but strangely it feels anti-climactic and not that satisfying. Still though, it is hard to deny this show as entertaining, it is just that even with Queenie's betrayal, Cordelia's plan being foiled and Fiona having a renewed interest in the coven, a serious jump- start is needed.
