Uhtred is still split, not knowing if he fits into Viking or Saxon life, he's seen as traitor by both. He and Brida remained locked up as the battle between Saxons and Danes was won, by Saxons, but at a price, the King is dead. The rightful heir Alfred, faces threat from Aethelwold who believes himself to be the natural successor to the throne of Wessex, he is sent away. Alfred is installed as King and places a huge faith in Uhtred, he's agreed a year's service, to help train the warriors, and he's at Alfred's side when he meets with the Danes and attempts a peace. With peace restored for the short term, tactician Alfred demands the building of ships, and the fighting methods of the Vikings be taught, all the while Uhtred's intention is land and peace. Brida miscarries and Ragnar returns, believing his 'brother' Uhtred he vows to kill Kjartan, he departs across the water together with Brida.
This series for me started out as something I half wanted to watch, that has turned into THE essential show of the week, I am totally hooked.
It's a fascinating moment in history, one not frequently looked at in TV dramas, it boasts superb production values, wonderfully pacing, and a fantastic calibre of acting, David Dawson once again is proving to be outstanding as Alfred, he's incredibly watchable, Alexander Dreymon shone particularly well too.
Best moment for me had to be Alfred's meeting with Guthrum and Ubba to thrash out a peace treaty, all shone in the scene it was a wonderful moment, you kept waiting for something to happen.
9/10 not much to fault at all!
