Heartbreaking, Expertly Crafted, and Strangely Comical
colinw-8434410 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This is the episode where I (alongside most other viewers) truly started to realize that the dreaded "eleventh episodes" would be the darker chapters of this series. This is a format that stays true even today.

Now, when I say "dreaded" I mean that in the most positive way. While this episode isn't as great as "Escape From L.A" in my opinion it's more close to reaching that bar than any other episode in the series as of yet. I love every episode of this show but for me these are the two episodes that may never be beat, and maybe that's just because of the mood I was in when I first watched them. I don't know.

"That's Too Much, Man!" has everything going for it. Sarah Lynn was one of my favorite supporting characters up until her demise this episode and having her last moments be in Bojacks arms is both depressing and oddly heartwarming. Not to mention the visuals inside the planetarium just look amazing. I'm SO glad she played a major role in this episode and wasn't jus shoehorned in.

We also see how hard it is for Bojack to function without Todd or PC in his life. Penny showing up again was a suprise, but a welcome one, especially if you interpret what she says to him as a product of what her parents probably fed her so she wouldn't feel guilty. That makes the most sense to me considering it really wasn't all that long ago since she tried to sleep with him. There's just no way she really matured that much over the course of 2 years.

All of this culminates into what I consider to be the most shocking scene in the course of the show. Which as previously mentioned is the death of Sarah Lynn. I audibly gasped the first time I watched that part, and it takes a lot to get me to do that. Overall I consider this to be one of the best episodes of the series, and even in animation as a whole. Episodes like this are why Bojack Horseman is without a doubt my favorite show.

Heart wrenching
skelebobinterdevil7 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is the most heart wrenching and deep episode of a series that I've seen in a long time. The amends part was depressing, and the planetarium scene broke my heart. The silence spoke volumes. Almost metaphorically that Sarah Lynn ODs on Bojack. Also breaks my heart knowing how well Sarah Lynn could have lived if Bojack didn't call her.

That's was... to much man.

Is it just me or the penultimate episode from each season of Bojack Horseman is the most beautifully tragic, deeply gut-wrenching and remarkably brilliant episodes they do. The ending was too much. This episode completely broke me. 😭💔🖤

Goddamn it. H O W ?!

Hauntingly Beautiful

This goes down as one of the most eloquent pieces of television to ever be created. Up with the high moments of Breaking Bad and Ozark. A commentary on our place in it all. No matter your own personal experience, you can relate to some portion of this show in your own unique. A beautiful display of human emotion.

This episode is really full of sadness! And yeah, that's too much man! The blackouts are realy interesting and smart that make this episode funny. Blackouts have been around for a long time. Bojak was on a long blackout when Sarah needed him. Sometimes it's gonna too late for make amends!

When you're drowning because of yourself, NEVER pull anyone else with you
eryknieeryk15 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The entire episode is BoJack at his worst and the series at its best. It's just unfathomable how such a haunting thing as plummeting down a pit of alcohol and drugs for more than a month and harming countless people in the process, including one of your longest-standing friends who does not deserve it at all and really looked up to you like no one else, could have so many hints of black and absurdist comedy in itself. Amazing how the concept actually came through, and the episode didn't come out in a wrong way. In every laugh there is an uncomfortable cringe (but proper cringe that goes well with the show) and with every other blackout, you just wish more BoJack would STOP. But he goes all the way in, which is unforgivable. It's astonishing how a series depicting such an out-of-touch and despicable character could be so well-written and just brilliant about its message and everything else. That's just too much, man.

The Best Since "Escape from L.A."
borowiecsminus28 July 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I want to be clear about this. I do not agree with IMDb that this is the best episode of the series. At the time of watching it, it was the second-best (behind "Escape from L.A.). But after watching the finale episode, it is now the third best. Just to be clear. The third-best episode, as of Season Three's release. With that being said...

This was fantastic.

This is true greatness in television. This is true greatness in animation. We haven't seen Sarah Lynn in over a season, we want her back before this one ends. Bojack goes on his biggest bender in the history of the show. Even bigger than the infamous "Downer Ending." Sarah Lynn is one of the most interesting characters in the show, and it was (SPOILERS) incredibly sad to see her go. But she got one hell of a send-off, didn't she?

It's a truly sad thing when someone misses receiving their own Oscar. Yes, I know, it happens all the time, but just think about it for a moment. The Oscars are the most watched non-sport event on television every single year for a very long time. They are the biggest awards in the world. The only trophy that's a bigger deal than an Oscar is a Super Bowl trophy. And you got one, and you weren't there. Those are the thoughts racing through Sarah Lynn's mind. Bojack's confession of his love for her doesn't feel romantic, it feels tragic. Because, even though you only see this at the end of the episode, you know nothing good can ever come out of Bojack and Sarah Lynn. And that makes his love for her even more tragic.

In short, if the next episode wasn't so good, this would be the best in Season Three.

It's fun and hilarious...
bevant-4313619 February 2022
Right up until it kicks you square in the balls. Seven times.

I'm in the middle of a rewatch right now and honestly I'm dreading getting up to this episode because while their lives are spiralling out of control, it's almost portrayed as fun and entertaining, but that's done so that when the end comes around, it hits you THAT much harder.

And that honestly makes me wanna cry just thinking about it.

It's such a well written episode though. I wouldn't change a thing.

Arguably the saddest episode of the whole show
ovexteam15 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
After 11 watches, this episode leaves me speechless each time. The writers of this show continue to amaze me. They somehow saw the masterpiece they made last season "escape from La" and thought "we can do better" which is exactly what they did. Bojack goes on a month long bender with Sarah Lynn, breaking her 9 months of sobriety, and drunkenly attempts to make amends with people he's wronged, even trying to reach out to Penny, the young girl he traumatised last season. The scene where Sarah Lynn wins an Oscar is so gut wrenching. She recognises how she was forced into this life and never got a chance to live as herself or even find out who she truly was. "Bojack, I don't like anything about me" that quote broke me the first time I saw it. And this scene still isn't even the most emotional in the episode. The scene right after takes that.

"Right Sarah Lynn? Sarah Lynn? Sarah Lynn?"

The episode that is the opus of series.
Ezknickels6 January 2023
Mesmerizingly beautiful & bleak at the same time. The 3rd reunion of Bojack & Sarah Lynn was done in such a witty, thoughtful, haunting, emotionally charged & engaging way you kindve feel yourself in this episode so Much as a third wheel for the most outlandish characters of the series's bender, that it gives you chills when they reach the epicenter of their trip.

Its a very heavy feat, accomplished by writers who definitely deserve the praise for their vision. To bring such deep and affecting life from one dimensional nihilistic characters who upon first glance appear only as extreme caricatures . But as we unravel the layers of their life stories and subsequent pain, and bare witness to to them being exposed by their impending bottom, we see them as mirrors to the rawest and existential human experiences. Ambition, purpose, & ultimately depression when those things dont bring us happiness. I weep for Sarah Lynne and Bojack, & every soul in need of something to helo the keep going, but never attains it. That is the essence of this episode "Thats too Much man". Life, sometimes is too much. And how sometimes when when we are drowning, the actual peril is reaching out. This episode hit all the feels. And is the saddest and most well done of the series. Bravo.

Some people.. you just cant save!
and_mikkelsen8 February 2024
This was the gut-punch i never expected! I feel sad and destroyed like my soul just got ripped apart.. piece by piece throughout the episode!

This was, along with Escape from L. A, the best and darkest episode thus far! This was JoJack at his lowest, trying to drown his sorrows and sins in drugs and alcohol... dragging Sarah Lynn into it!

I've always loved Sarah Lynn, she was only a victim of her environment.. amd it really seemed she was going somewhere!

Thats why the ending completely broke me! It took some time before i realized just how dark it was!

Now I can only think... what would have happened if BoJack didn't call her?

Amazing episode
tzzdsr27 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I've never written a review before, but upon rewatch, this is my favorite episode of TV ever. I've seen amazing shows and this is #1.

I like how they got rid of all the filler that most episodes of tv shows have and just boiled it down so they could fit this months long bender into one 30 minute episode. If this show had an hour long episode, this could've been it.

This episode is where everything changes for Bojack. Minutes before the ending, he has one of his last conversations with Sarah Lynn. They talk about how they have a real bond. Their relationship is unique and very strong. While it does creep me out that Bojack said he loved her because of their age difference, a character isn't great without flaws.

The episode poses the question, what would've happened if everything was ok after the bender? While it would make sense to think that Bojack and Sarah Lynn would have a better relationship and that the two would've learned a lot, it is more realistic to believe that they would've just drifted apart.

Still, the episode is phenomenal. This is where everything is lost in Bojack. He has reached rock bottom and the saddest part is that he never climbed back. This episode made me cry a lot.

Perfection
zxhrqjhw15 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
A representation of Bojack Horseman as a character is what this episode does best. It shows the nitty gritty of who he is and the things he's capable of. During this episode, Bojack displays his power over Sarah Lynn from the moment he first calls her on the phone, to the moment of her death. The entire time Bojack And Sarah Lynn are on this bender, Bojack so clearly has influence and power over Sarah Lynn. The way she drops everything for him and does what he says, it's really sad to watch. Going house to house and even to a different state just because Bojack says so. But each time Sarah Lynn would mention a place (like the Griffith observatory) Bojack would shut it down. This episode perfectly displays the truly awful selfish actions of Bojack Horseman. He never cared until it was too late for everything he's ever done wrong, and Sarah Lynn was the cherry on top.

beautifully sad
shwhwhtbbfxjis11 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is very sad but the animation is so beautiful, bojack goes on a bender after finding out he wasn't nominated, last time bojack and sarah lynn spoke she told him to call her when he's ready to party, she is now nine months sober, but is ready to relapse immediately when bojack is ready to take her up on her previous offer, we watch them try to apologize to people which isn't done successfully because they are both very high, however bojack later attempts this more successfully in season 6, they continue to spiral further until sarah lynn ends up dying in the planetarium.

Another very strong gonzo episode
snoozejonc29 March 2024
BoJack and Sarah Lynn binge alcohol and narcotics.

Too Much Man is a predictable but very well made episode that excels in black comedy and character development.

BoJack and Sarah go through a substance fuelled journey that is written cleverly from a specific perspective. It includes several moments of self-reflection by various characters that tie the plot and themes together very well.

The dialogue and visuals are consistently funny (mostly in a dark way) but as always in BoJack you feel a sense of dread about where events are heading. When the climax arrives it is not unexpected, but delivered perfectly.

For me it's an 8.5/10, but I round upwards.
