Last week's episode had the feeling of a mid-season or even season finale with the ramifications of Savitar's return. And although tonight's episode continued the ominous tone for the most part, there were a few plot points that seemed to come a little too easy for Team Flash.
I really love the idea of Barry traveling into the Speed Force every once in a while. Just as a pure sci-fi storytelling device, it's about as interesting as this show has provided us. One of the coolest things it can do is provide a reason for certain actors to return to their beloved roles. Eddie & Ronnie were both criminally underused in season 1, and it was nice seeing them back. We also got surprise appearances from Captain Cold, Black Flash, and even Jay Garrick. Everyone besides Jay, was communicating through the Speed Force to Barry in attempt to prevent him from taking Wally's place.
It's unconventional, but I really enjoyed all of those conversations Barry has through different aspects of the Speed Force. Anything the show does to embrace the science fiction nature of the comics is fine by me. But I did find it a little convenient and too easy for Wally to be back after only one episode in the Speed Force. Doesn't it ruin the huge moment that was Wally taking Savitar's place last week? Jay taking Wally's place had an emotional weight on its own, but he's barely on the show so it isn't the same.
Jesse decided to take the Savitar problem into her own hands as the team found a way to track him via the piece of metal from his suit. I've always loved Violett Beane's performance and It's nice to finally see her out on her own, but again, her stabbing Savitar with a piece of his own suit felt too easy. I know it served the purpose of having the team "realize" there's a human underneath all that metal, but I don't think it should have felt that easy. You have to wonder what her fate on this show is after what Savitar told her. Perhaps covering for Jay on Earth-3 is exactly what she needs.
Last but not least, Barry and Iris decided to take a "break". Not exactly sure why Barry felt that doing this was going to save Iris, but I guess it's just another one of his unorthodox ways about fixing the future. So, there wasn't a Savitar reveal or a character death, but tonight featured many surprises and plenty of sci-fi awesomeness via the Speed Force. Some scenes didn't feel as earned as they should have, but there was enough of everything else to keep everything afloat.
+Love the Speed Force episodes
+Character returns
+Jay's sacrifice was bold
-But it also was a tad convenient
8.7/10
