The Flash - S04E03 Luck Be a Lady
j_forbesy25 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The Flash has been off to a fairly good start for me. I've really liked how they have set up The Thinker early and set up a lighter tone to what we have gotten the past couple of seasons.

This episode continued on from what we have been getting the first two episodes. We are into episode 3 and the team has already been able to identify that there are 12 metas they have to deal with. In the past, we would of only had sprinkles of the big bad but now everything we see the team do is working into the big bad story.

The tone and humour this episode was really up there for me. They had that light hearted banter and back and forth that we hadn't really gotten since Barry lost his memory last season.

Onto the villain of the episode, I really enjoyed the concept of Hazard. The fact that it is such an early episode in the season meant her presence allowed us to spend some time to see her negative effect on the luck of the team. While I know launching another Particle Accelerator did clear up the problem of how they would take her out a bit too neatly, I never really expected them to spend a large amount of time coming up with an ingenious plan to take her out.

I feel like as a season they are really trying to peel it back and get back to the core of what people enjoy about the Flash. They have made the light hearted tone, the villains of the week aren't just there as filler, they have taken Kid Flash out of the equation to give Barry some more space, going by this episode the Barry and Iris drama has been toned back and their relationship is more of a background story and they have brought back my favourite Wells, Earth 2 Harry.

Overall, Flash is in that weird place at of a series that people have forgotten how cheesy and campy the show was back in season 1. While season 1 set such this high bar that this show will never get back to, this season has setup a tone and story arc that could come anything close to what season 1 could. Yes there is more drama, but drama comes with a show being on so long. The Flash can no longer be about a speedster saving a city without drama the same as Arrow can't just be about a guy in a hood taking out bad people.

Hazard

Much like a good chunk of Flash episodes over the years, 'Luck Be a Lady' had great intentions and ideas, it just didn't execute them the way I would have hoped. It's almost become a trend at this point, but I really don't care for this year of Arrowverse shows. I understand it's only been a couple of weeks, but not a single episode of any show has seriously impressed me, not even Arrow itself.

But really tonight's episode of Flash is what I should be focusing on, considering there was a few 'important' things that happened. The Thinker has made another move on Team Flash, and the team continued to be near clueless on what is happening. Luckily, they realized that they were actually at fault with the new meta-humans who have been roaming Central City. That in itself was a neat thing that The Thinker managed to pull off, but I'm still not behind The Thinker as a villain to begin with. Everything about him just screams 90's Star Trek and that's not a good thing.

Tonight saw the return of the fan-favorite, Earth-2 Harry. I'm glad to see Tom Cavanagh no matter who he's playing, but Harry has been my favorite version of Wells. Of course, I'm sure we're getting a new version soon, but I'll enjoy Harry's presence while it lasts. Speaking of which, Harry brought a message for Wally, via break up cube, that had Jesse breaking up with him. This was completely out of nowhere, but more because we just don't hear or see that couple. Ever. This led to Wally eventually deciding to leave Central City and go to Blue Valley. As much as I don't like the Wally character, I actually felt bad for him when he brought up that nobody even realized he was gone in this episode. I'm sorry but that's exactly what all of the audience thinks every single episode. The character is rarely used, so why even have him?

The villain of the week was a meta named Becky Sharpe aka Hazard, who manages to give everyone bad luck who comes within a certain amount of feet from her. This even led her to a scene at the slot machines, tell me this didn't give other people some Dougie from Twin Peaks vibes? Again, a creative idea for a villain for this show, I just didn't care for the actresses' performance or the overall execution. It did make for some funny moments from the main cast when their luck was nonexistent.

Overall, it was another chess-piece moving episode for The Thinker (yes, they actually showed him moving chess pieces), but it was rarely an eventful one. Let's pick up the pace a bit, huh?

Shades of S1 and a surprising move

Warning: Spoilers
+++++++ Yes, still no opening monologue!!! And OTF having fun/hanging out! Hope they do a drunk bar-hop like the one in Chronicles of Cisco.

++ Slapsticky yes, still fun though: slipping on marbles, StarLab bros running into each other, funeral theme wedding/bridezilla Iris, cube hitting HR on the bounceback, bickering Cisco/HR.

+ Can't believe I'm happy HR is back: he's believable as de facto leader than Iris. And they actually wrote out Wally?! Not that I'm complaining. The team is too big, and 2 speedsters is 1 too many. Recurring is best as we still get Kid Flash but in a way that makes his appearances exciting, similar to RF on LoT last season. Now if only they'll do the same with Iris and the rest of the team.

+ S1 echos: Joe/Barry convo, OTF, Thinker channeling Eobard Wells' methodology from the journal entries to the inside StarLabs surveillance to the manipulation. Not too sure I like the last one though.

Wally and HR suffering from weird hair. Also, that was a s***ty way to break up with someone. But I did want to see that cube dispense a Kleenex...

+/- Soap opera melodrama was at an all time low but still running a persistent thread through the entire ep with Cecile and Iris alternating with calls to Joe and Barry about one thing or another. (Don't these ladies have a job? Oh wait...). Then we got the coda which dialed the soap opera melodrama up to 1000. Though how was Cecile's fall good for the little bun?!

+/- Hazard caused the PA to do what it did, so the answer to nullifying her is to let her luck run until it runs back on her? While I liked how letting the PA do its thing was the answer and also prop up why HR should stay, I didn't like they had everyone just flopping around the entire time, especially Flash in the middle of a freaking casino. Writers still can't write.

  • We-Iris strikes again: Joe can't run sketches through CCPD database without her help. Because if flash himself can't get through the day without her, how could poor regular Joe? Also, what's the point of a mask if you're just going to out yourself to E.V.E.R.Y.O.N.E. including the baddie?

Still, this ep is miles better than the last 2 and had a lot of humor.

Score: 8

here we go again

yay more inane banter/arguments. maybe this show should be cut down to 20 minutes because it's often clear that writers don't have ideas(or the budget) to fill an episode of this lengths, so majority of it ends up full of painful to watch filler. Whatever renewed enthusiasm I got from the first few episodes of the 4th season is dying fast.

Season threat?
hawkins_saints_rock25 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
So I'm actually quite conflicted about how to rate and review this weeks installment of The Flash. On the one hand, I felt like this week was the strongest episode of the young season. But on the other, I have some issues/concerns with the overall threat of this season. But anyways I'll get into it.

Loved the opening with The Thinker narrating about this weeks "villain", Hazard. Thinker definitely has a different feel about him to previous big bads (not just not being a speedster). What is his plan?

Once again we had a ton of great funny moments. Cisco once again being the star in particular with his "You have failed this city" line, and his arguments with Harry. Thank god Tom Cavanagh is back by the way. Easily my favourite actor/character on the show and it's no coincidence that they produce higher quality episodes with him in them. Harry's attempted breakup with Wally on Jessie's behalf was hysterical, but poor Wally.

So once again the "villain" of the week (can I even call her a villain?) wasn't much. In saying that her powers actually made for entertaining viewing, and seeing Team Flash trying to deal with all their bad luck was hilarious. The negative thing about this though, is that her powers didn't really leave much room for Barry to be The Flash, as her powers were all about luck. So we got a lack of Flash this week which wasn't great.

We learned how Hazard and the rest of the new metas obtained their powers. It wasn't through the speedforce storm as I initially thought, but through the portal they created when they brought Barry back. Interesting way to handle the creating new metas, but I like it. How Thinker planned for this though has me puzzled.

Another negative was once again we had a lack of Kid Flash, which resulted in Wally leaving. I've been really disappointed with the lack of Kid Flash this season. I was so excited to finally see Wally become a speedster last season and he has been drastically underused in his time as a hero. While I don't think this will be the last we see of Wally, that goodbye ending really felt like the end of Kid Flash. Hope I'm wrong.

OK, so about my conflicting thoughts. I liked this episode, and think it was the strongest so far. But this season we are lacking an overall threat to Team Flash. I know it's only episode 3, but last season we had the threat of Alchemy, season 2 we had the threat of the mystery that was Zoom, and season 1 we had the mission of Barry finding his mother's killer. This season, so far, has no threat. They slightly caught on to it and the end of the episode where Harry suggested out of the blue that the bus of people, the metas, and Barry coming back is too much of a coincidence to happen at the same time. But that wasn't enough for me. Next week has to have the beginning of a big threat to The Flash and Central City or this season will be in trouble.

Enjoyable episode, but overall season plot line and threat looking shaky which influences my rating this week. 8.2/10

Some laughs, and light hearted fun lol

Some laughs, and light hearted fun lol..

My 2 favorite parts are when some yells out...

"are those live lobsters?" lol

and when Barry trips and handcuffs himself in a highly unprobable circumstance. LOL.

It's kinda far fetched the episode making "luck" out to be a thing but hey, Deadpool did it in their movie and it worked out fine. LOL

The Flash starts out so well from season one onward... I hope it continues being awesome (I'm on season four now) but if the other CW shows are any indicator they will probably ruin this show in later seasons like they did with Supergirl.

I found this episode entertaining which is all I ask for in my shows. :)

Started nicely but still has a long way to go!
asb_deutsch28 October 2017
Finally, the series starts to looking forward. The Thinker definitely has a different type of spreading evil but he looks unconvincing so far. I don't feel threatened when he says "I'm smarter". What is his plan?

The side villain had a different role, like she was coming from the "extras" crew and looked like more of an excuse to justify luck. But this episode again makes you care about the other characters, especially when Barry Allen says "It matters most when people love you"

My ratings (based on what I marked on IMDb): Season 1: 200/23 = 8.69 Season 2: 193/23= 8.23; Season 3: 188/23= 8.17; and Season 4: 20.5/3 = 6.83

My significant score: 7/10. See you flash fans next week!

Disappointment

What happened to the male characters' hair? they look so bad! the scenery is really bad and it gets worse reasons for adding and removing characters extremely simple :) I want to follow the TV show but it becomes hard to tolerate screen writers need to study more about the development of characters. a journalist can not suddenly become a scientist ;)

Spinning the Wheel

Warning: Spoilers
First of, nice little detail of choosing episode 3 to be the episode where luck is the villain's power.

The episode itself was fairly okay. Fun but overall it mostly made baby steps on the season story as a whole. That is all fine when we still have twenty episodes left and no season of Flash really picked up within the first three.

I liked Hazard as a villain with the ridiculous thought that the Flash could trip on a marble or even cuff himself. They didn't hold back on the bad luck essentially letting every character, except for Caitlin, experience some bad luck. Barry and Iris tried to get married but couldn't do so, the old West home has seen better days, Cisco got his love-hate relationship with good ol' Harry back oh and Wally first got dumped and then decided to leave Central City. All that makes it sounds like a lot happened this episode but like I pointed out earlier the season is merely taking its first baby steps.

Whatever the Thinker's mission is it includes quite a lot of people which is good because it gives a convenient reason as to why he has hasn't made a greater move against Team Flash yet. At the same time it reveals that we won't be getting onto the main conflict for quite a while and waiting for things to happen was a lot of the issues of the previous season. Let's hope they don't make the same mistake with this season. For the Thinker's plan so far is only slightly interesting and could need something more than just waiting for single meta-humans to show up for another ten episodes.

For a second I thought Joe was having a heart attack there at the end. Another West sibling? I have no idea if I like this idea or not.

All in all it was an okay episode that had some fun with the luck/bad luck moments but ultimately may not be the most important episode of the Flash.

Goofy and Stupid...
lassegalsgaard-4528420 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
So, "The Flash" has always been a very goofy show, but it has always found a way to include some seriousness and heart in there, as well. The third season decided to go away from that and almost shed every last ounce of fun from its bones, which turned off some fans, including myself. I don't like when the show tries to do one thing, because it doesn't work for "The Flash." It will work shows like "Arrow" or "Legends of Tomorrow," because they were set up that way. However, this show has always been a good combination of both those elements. What the writers have done this time, is to complete remove the serious aspects from the the story, and just go ahead with a lot of stupid/useless plotlines and goofy characters that are not interesting to follow. This episode was a minor step up from last week, but it was still too much of the one thing and had almost nothing interesting to it.

I like this show, so it's common for me to find things about the episodes that I enjoyed, even though they were disappointing overall. I liked the development of multiple characters in this episode. Especially that of Wally West, who have always been a weak character for me. I don't think he has a real role to play in this show, and I think that the writers have had a hard time coming up with new stuff for him to do. So I liked the approach they took to him in this episode, and what ultimately ended up happening with his character was a great blow of fresh air. I like to see what will happen to him when he comes back and what his future on the show brings.

This episode also brought back one of my favorite bromances in the show. Cisco and Wells-2 had great chemistry as usual, and what they did in this episode and how they argued, felt true to their characters. Even though I think they have changed Wells-2's personality too much from how he was in the past seasons. He used to be a bit more edged, but this time he just seem clumsy and not able to really express himself, which I don't know if I really like that much. However, I am happy that he is staying around for a little bit, and I can't wait to see what he brings to the team.

I also liked the setup for future episodes. I have been questioning the Thinker's positions in this whole season, which is why I haven't brought him up until now. Clifford DeVoe is a great comicbook villain, and I have been excited to see how they were going to include him, and now I feel like I'm finally starting to understand what his purpose is and why he did everything he did so far. This episode actually made me appreciate episode one a little bit more, even though it was still not a great episode.

And this episode continues that trend, because this ain't a great episode either. It continued the goofy feeling that this entire season has had so far, especially last episode with the couples therapy thing. This episode throws that away and replaces it with a fake wedding scene instead where Barry and Iris are about to get "married." I hated that scene, because of its very goofy nature and it felt so unrealistic and just stupid.

And, I have mentioned this in every episode of the season so far, but the antagonist was horrendous. I don't like what the writers are doing with the villains so far, nor do I think the actors they choose to play them give convincing or great performances. But while Hazard wasn't as cartoonish as the Kilg%re was, she was still a waste of time, and another proof that this show needs to get back on track quickly.

Ranking/Reviewing every Flash episode: Luck Be A Lady
lbramson12 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
A bus meta with incredible luck named Becky Sharpe uses her powers to get what she wants. I mean...it's better than the Becky Sharpe episode in Season 9. This season is off to a very underwhelming start because Luck Be A Lady is an improvement on the last but still meh. This episode just cheesy filler and there's nothing to disquise that. Looking at it, it shouldn't be that bad. This is the episode where Cecile is pregnant and Wally leaves, but Barry is so incompetent! We are 4 years in and he still doesn't know basic common sense on how to be a superhero. Let's break an actual scene down. Barry is chasing Becky Sharpe down the road. He then sees a truck full of marbles that fall on the ground. He then, I kid you not, trips on the marble and just lays there because she "got away". The fastest man alive tripped on marbles and lost. 🤦🏻

5.5/10-Meh.😐
