The British feature "Vampyres" is a soft-core porn classic from 4 decades back, and Stills & Mills' new "Vampires" could also achieve that status in the hardcore genre. I'm reviewing the recent Girlfriends Films DVD release of the 216-minute version, split up into five sections in IMDb's recent stress on internet porn and the "scene" as pre-eminent.
But this is an integral story, split into segments for commercial reasons, as fans currently support an all-sex approach rather than the feature film bias that I carry over from the Golden Age ('70s into '80s) of theatrical release porn. On screen it's introduced specifically as "a Girlsway original feature", not a chopped-up miniseries.
Abigail Mac and blind step-sister Shyla Jennings are the central protagonists, with Shyla getting top billing in the opening credits. Her career peak came with Girlfriends Films' top release "Poor Little Shyla" in which she made a hit with fans as the oft-abused crippled girl in a very dark Black Comedy, and here is handicapped with blindness instead.
Principal villainess is a strong player ever since her Penthouse days Jelena Jensen, with purple hairdo that she also sports in Stills & Mills' Mommy's Girl label release "My Mom's Tits", plus normal hair color in another of that DVD's vignettes. Alan's script (instead of his usual reliance on improvised dialog) is a familiar battle for leadership of a coven (made up of vampires rather than traditional witches), given a twist by his (and producer Bree's) emphasis on incest, though as usual they water it down with an underlined speech by Abigail to Shyla on how they're not blood sisters after all but have same dad/different moms, prior to one of their incestuous humping scenes. Shyla's character Ella is one year younger than Abigail's Lucy, though in real-life Ms. Jennings is 3 years older.
Livening up the proceedings is today's #1 by a wide margin Adult star Angela White as an ancient vampire lady resurrected by Jelena to help turn Abigail, leading to a very strong three-way sex scene in Part 4 of the show, prior to the final battle between Jelena and Shyla for domination. My favorite member of the Stills & Mills lesbian acting troupe Selena Blair is fun as a vampire hunter with trusty silver-tipped bullets, while Carter Cruise and Georgia Jones, familiar lesbian icons, are nearly unrecognizable with heavy stylization as other vamps, along with Melissa Moore cast as usual in the Riley Reid role (her far more famous lookalike) of the most important "daughter" in Jensen's coven. After 3 and a half hours, the show ends with a brief nude cameo by Moore, reappearing suddenly in order to set up a potential sequel.
Special effects are good for a porno, and while the sex action adheres to the team's "over the top" approach of exaggeration, the sincere acting performances are far better than usual for a Girlsway offering. For me it marks signs of definite improvement by the busy team whose output has up till now been generally mediocre.
Mindi Mink, star of many a Girlfriends Film release, has a small but credited NonSex Role in Part 4 as the sisters' mom, literally phoning in her part.
Alan's take on vampire lore is generally fun, though the issue of sunlight preventing vamps from strolling around in the daytime is poorly fudged, as Mac wears a big floppy hat, shades and gloves -hardly enough to permit her frequent traipsing.
