Mediocre and Disappointing

Sean Bean was awesome in this episode.

The pacing was poor, the action was really bad, the character development was done really poor and the editing was terrible and the story and characters (apart from Sean Bean) were bland and boring, I didn't care about any of the characters nor their goals and the way the episode was told was so odd. Pretty poor start.

Slow starter, but a hint of potential.

Warning: Spoilers
Ok, so the set up is, in the near future zombies hang around at night and the UK is in a bad way anyway. To escape this and get to "The Island" (does it exist or doesn't it) people must take part in illegal street races. This first episode starts to lay down the back story and we don't actually see any "racing" except the moment they're about to start. This itself leads me to believe the second episode should be more race action filled which is what the trailer seems to promise most. I do hope the effects improve though as the chase scene with the McLaren, especially the crash, were awful for this day and age. Episode 2 is really going to decide for me if I watch anymore of this, so far....average, series.

Warning: Spoilers
Near future Britain. There's a curfew. But an ambulance driver breaks that, heading off to the start of a very special race.

Then it's twelve hours earlier. Agh! That overused story device again! But it follows said driver and other characters into how they got into said race in the first place.

Which is a way to get out of this nightmare Britain and to a place where you can live happily ever after.

In addition to said ambulance driver, a decent woman having a bad day, there's a also a family. Whose dad is a decent man driven to do desperate things but not quite able to shake his decency. A few other characters all of whom tie with this lot. And Sean Bean. Playing Sean B and seemingly enjoying doing it.

This takes itself rather seriously, all takes place at night and thus is figuratively and literally dark. It is in a strange way quite refreshing to see something that doesn't pull its punches in depicting the effect of being shot. There is strong language on a couple of occasions.

It does seem rather too determined to be realistic, when perhaps a more grindhouse approach might work better.

But then you find why they have the curfew. Which really is a grindhouse moment. Not played as such.

And yet, it rather had me from then on.. Even with flashbacks in the middle of one long flashback. But the episode ends having done all the set up required, so next week should have car races.

Not great art. Don't expect it to be such. But watchable enough to make me want to see what happens next.

Episode 1.1

It took 60 minutes for the race to start!

The set up seems to be like Death Race 2000 but this lacks the mad fun of the SyFy series Blood Drive. I thought the opening episode was confusing and lacked focus. It was just too po-faced.

Set in some Alternative Britain in the near future. There is an Authoritarian government with a huge para military police force. Shoot to kill is the order of the day.

There is a strict curfew. In the opening episode it starts at 7.00 pm in London. I told you it has to be an alternative Britain, where else would the North Circular Road would be clear enough for anyone to get home in time.

What I could gather was that some people want to take part in some top secret race, they need a special box to enter which costs lots of money.

The winner gets to go into the promised land, an island where people are free from a virus.

The reason for the curfew? Britain has become infected with some zombie like virus which turns people into savage killers at night.

I think this could be a parody of Brexit Britain. At least the zombie killers moved fast unlike this episode.
