Great ideas, but....
The_Professor_Scary7 December 2021
"Escape 2120" tells the tale of Dave, a young man who had lost his parents, and was looking to escape his life. He wins a competition with his prize of helping two scientists with their experiment in time travel.

The story has great ideas, in both who to travel through time, and what the world would be like in the distant future.

Unfortunately, the movie was very slow moving, with a number of the concepts, not very well explained.

Too much time was spent on dialogue, and not enough on exploring the world of the future.

I did like the Doc - who seemed to be a cross between Doc Brown (Back to the Future) and Max Headroom.

With a bigger budget, this movie would have had the potential to be very impressive and entertaining.

I did watch this movie till the end, but it was a struggle.

Oh my

I have three words for this movie: Terr-i-ble. It may have had a great story but I couldn't follow it. The acting; the acting. I normally would disregard bad acting if the story was intriguing. But I didn't pay great attention and wasn't worth it. Played in the background while I looked at stories on my phone 📱.

Could have been better
keshirley6 February 2021
Before watching this movie, I read the bad reviews, then read the books it was based on. For that reason, it was probably easier for me to follow than for others.

Obviously the movie is low budget. Bad acting was present, but the guy who played Samuel was almost unbearable to watch.

I feel this movie could be remade with more money, better actors, and perhaps more action scenes with better changes in musical score, and might then do a bit better.

Bad
africe10 November 2020
This movie is awful. Mostly because of bad acting. Not the young female actor but basically everyone else. I almost wish I would have read the book. The movie has great premise but needs most of the characters recast

what had potential ended up in a cheap mess
casablancavic22 October 2020
Like the rest of 2020, this has become a mess of gigantic proportions

it had potential, but lost track of where it was going - and with a cast that has little to no spark on screen, lousy effects, poor development, lost story, boring props and no sountrack to blend in to make this any more interesting...this just drags on far too long

if the timing was cut and it even had remotely interesting dialog and some thought given about advancements in the future, this could have been interesting - instead it was a bore which dragged on longer than it needed to be - and with the lack of budget to sustain anything that was needed, the basic design of the story made it a total drag to sit through

I wasn't looking for the next Star Trek or Star Wars, but when the poster is more impressive than the film, then there's a serious problem

hopefully your next effort is more entertaining, more thought put into it - and a bigger budget with stuff that makes it interesting

for a future world, this is less interesting than the stone age - and for all the advacements of travel, they have next to nothing for living - less than a jail cell

and that is where it all falls apart...more than the tiring story

They broke or failed to explain the rules
NolanSorrento12 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Acting was flat, lines really could use a punch up but worse of all the science of the movie lacked any explanation or consistent rules

Somehow it went from a time traveling to space traveling using the same logic then they decided that traveling back in time was acceptable though it seemed impossible at the start of the movie.

So many things wrong with this movie!

Not just bad, but shamefully, painfully bad...

How the actors who appear in this disaster don't cringe in embarrassment beggars belief. I want my 107 minutes back.

Truly Awful
ikcaj13 October 2020
Apparently this was based on a book that was probably a pretty decent story but unfortunately it was not transferred to the screen. The acting is horrendous. It is so bad at points it completely takes one out of the story. Given the gaping plot holes and things that are simply never explained I can only assume entire chapters must have been skipped. As it is, it makes no sense at all. Sad to see someone else's creative vision reduced to a bad high school play.

Not Perfect But Not Bad
StuOz24 May 2021
A young man travels into the future.

Despite a zero budget and bad acting from some of the supporting cast (not the leads), this is not too bad at all. Today, we get so many fast paced science fiction "epics" with endless action scenes and too many quick edits. This is the other side to all that. No action scenes and no quick edits - but that is good!

Perhaps some of the reviewers are young and just don't know that productions like Escape 2120 have been made for decades as far back as the 1950s. In fact, this could almost pass as something made in the 1990s.

In a nutshell, if you are after a lavish Hollywood production, you will not like this. However, if you want two interesting young people and some clever science fiction ideas - you will enjoy this retro flick.

A GOOD terrible movie.
mcemi15 December 2020
The lack of a budget can be seen clearly throughout the entire film. The acting is great, the concept and story is fantastic. The execution is... hmmm. As far as bad movies go, this is a great one. It's worth your time if you are into sci-fiction.

College play style
jskjj7329 November 2021
Seemed like a decent college play until villain David Affleck came along. He's a very poor actor. Despite that, it held my interest. I don't regret watching on a late night.

Are you serious?! Are YOU serious?!!!

I don't even know what to say because it is offensive to language to use words to describe this garbage. I can only think of all the good movie ideas that got passed on so THIS audio-visual diarrhea could be splattered on my screen.

Everything about this movie is awful.
ashleylexox30 January 2021
This movie had a little potential from the beginning, but it never brought anything together. I love sci-fi movies and wanted to check this one out, but everything was so cheaply done. The storyline was really cheesy. It was also very unbelievable that a "brotherhood" would get so upset and want to go after someone over fish hooks. Really? Come on! Even the villain in this movie was such a bad villain it was entirely unbelievable, almost to the point of laughable. The camera work was terrible as well. I almost didn't finish the movie because how bad it was but I had already wasted an hour. Why not finish it? But I was so uninterested that I still don't really know what happened at the end.

Terrible but worth watching
kothosj24 February 2023
This movie has a really interesting and thought-provoking story. ... That's it. Everything else about it was just terrible. The acting was horrible (except for some promise showed by Samantha Ipema) and the script was worse than that. It reminded me of low-budget flicks from the eighties, although you can give it some slack considering it's a no-budget indie production.

But, it did have a good story with an interesting and believable premise. The science gets muddled right at the end and it doesn't tie up with much satisfaction, but it's worth watching - just. Give it a go if you like believable science fiction and imagined future worlds.

What in thee entire hell did I just watch?
lvbhd3 September 2023
The fact that someone made this, edited this, previewed this and then as a collective group decided to move forward and release this mess into the universe... further let's me know how incredibly insane people actually are!

The budget had to be like $235, with no payroll and promises of royalties off the sale. Someone is definitely in debt over this mess!

I almost have to believe that crack or some other form of hard narcotics were involved in the decision to fund, produce and direct something of this low caliber.

Looks like it was shot in a high school and the woods behind the high school.

And it is my sincere opinion that the actors had to be utterly ashamed of themselves for even being involved.

All involved should almost certainly and immediately decided to have a career change, and never tell family or friends that they were ever apart of this...

Cringeworthy
mistermansfield22 December 2021
Oh dear. Somebody call Over-actors Anonymous. The script was appalling. The actors delivered their lines like they were doing a high school play. With a bigger budget, a script writer who can write, and actors who can act this actually might be a watchable movie. As it is, I sat there feeling embarrassed for the actors. David Afflick as the baddie was especially bad. Cringe-worthy, in fact. Not recommended under any circumstance. I'd rather read a bus timetable.

If you're not into thinking, give it a miss.
terryarnottau30 October 2020
OK, I'll start by saying the acting isn't great, or the props, or the cinematography. The male and female leads are pretty decent while the rest of the cast are admittedly, pretty bad. Clearly the props, what there are of them, are NOT where the budget went and consist mainly of a few very simple and identical costumes, some fruit and a bunch of tents. So why 6/10? Why not 1 if it's so bad? Well, because it's not actually THAT bad. In spite of all the complaints, if you make allowances for the fact it's an independent, no-budget, almost student-grade production, it's actually a pretty good, if simple, story. On one condition...... You have to be able to think. You don't get everything spelled out for you. Maybe the book had all the details and explanations, but the movie doesn't. You need to think it through, and when you do, you realise the premise is actually pretty well realised and you find yourself filling in the gaps with your own theories and ideas. This isn't a big-budget Hollywood SFX overloaded time travel movie, it is a simple rendering of a more logical concept of time travel. There are no flux-capacitors or warp-cores or killer robots. Just a simple box (or foil bag) that suspends the contents till the field is turned off. If you accept this movie for what it is, a representation of a different concept of time travel, and enjoy being given the freedom to fill in the blanks for yourself, then it's actually a really good way to spent an hour and a half.

I'm always ready to watch anything involving time travel. I got through this movie, but only to see how it would end. I hope the Mystery Science Theater guys do this movie. It's right up their alley, and just what this movie needs!

Samantha Ipema is by far the best thing about this movie
josephtoreno2 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Many people criticize the acting in this movie but while overall it wasn't great (with the exception of Samantha Ipema) it's unfair to compare everyone in the movie to her. Ms. Ipema reminds me of someone from the Golden Age of Hollywood with her perfect natural beauty as well as amazing acting talent, she will undoubtedly be a star in the near future. The movie has a great concept and I thought told the story very well with a few exceptions. Doc & Sally are apparently traveling through time looking for Dave but no explanation is given as to how they knew he had left 2020 or how they knew when and where he traveled to. I thought the technology shown 800 years in the future was great and very believable but the technology shown in the brief scene set 100 years in the future wasn't. Given where our technology is now it's almost certain there will be no flying cars in 100 years, I thought that scene should have been set maybe 200 or 300 years in the future. The concept of portals being used to travel through space is something being talked about now so it being perfected 800 years from now is believable.

The worst part about the movie was Sam, that character was too over the top and reminiscent of the villains in silent movies who would tie people to train tracks. I cannot reiterate enough how the magnificent performance turned in by Samantha Ipema was, she is the type of actress not scene in a long time. Most of Hollywood now is dominated either by women with incredibly good looks but little else to add to a movie or women who can carry a movie all by themselves with their amazing talent but with looks that are rather plain which would make them unbelievable as a femme fatale. Samantha Ipema on the other hand possesses the most amazing acting talent AND equally amazing physical beauty. See this movie if only for her.

Interesting story
emkay459727 November 2020
Early in the movie, it becomes apparent the movie could have benefitted from more money for some added technical expertise. The story was interesting and the cast did a commendable job of telling it. I'm sure this movie will be a cringe worthy stepping stone to great careers should they decide to keep at it.
