There is a good film in here, but it ultimately gets lost in the overly long run time. But yes it is a fascinating oddity: An unconventional western dominated by the desires of women. worth watching. James Welch Henderson, Arkansas 3/16/2021

Unusual Civil War Take
twelve-house-books29 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is a Civil War film with an unusual take similar to The Keeping Room and the original Beguiled. And, if you just like looking at stunningly pretty girls, you won't go wrong here. But outside of being visually titillated with the pulchritudinous presences of the three sisters, the story isn't half bad either--and it even has weird men with their heads and faces covered in white whose motives are unknown except for the fact that they are chasing a French family from St. Charles, Missouri who are trying to escape the Civil War and go back to France. There is some silly witchcraft here as well, and it is presented as workable if the participants believe in it--therefore a turncoat is cursed by the girl who loves him and he dies in the same way that she tortures a voodoo doll. The run time of 2 hours was fine if the story had been more coherent, but the acting and photography are both superb nonetheless. Worth a watch if you're not expecting the typical 1860s fare.
Compelling But Confusing

Warning: Spoilers
Initially I enjoyed the movie because I never realized the French had this much trouble during this time period. But as the movie progressed, i couldn't figure out the location. Isn't St. Charles in Missouri? I never saw them cross a river (Missouri or Mississippi) and it's a long way from New Orleans. Also, one minute they're in a desert and mountains, the next they're in snow, then summer time. If I knew there were people following me, I would have been a little more anxious to speed up and not linger. And, the young girl keeps wandering off into the woods and getting into danger. They should have been more vigilant after they discovered the other group was following them.
Slow movie not worth your time

Confusing

St Charles is in Missouri, USA. In the movie they are going to New York. They certainly took the long way. Parts of the movie looked a little like the Rockies. Other parts looked like Utah and South Dakota. There are no bad lands between Missouri and New York. Still other parts were not at all on the possible trip, did not even look like North American. And what season was it? Fall to winter back to fall. It does not snow that much in the southern USA. What about the civil war? Nothing related to civil war on their trip. Just in the beginning. You would think they would come across an old battlefield. The acting was good! Scripts undeveloped. The editing and the planning of the sets were really bad. The film did not support the skills of the actors and just left me confused.
Little French Women

Warning: Spoilers
In 1983 a French family living in Missouri is caught in between the north and the south. The sympathize with the south, but are officially neutral. Wanting to get out of the country they turn to a grifter as their only way. And he has a woman and company hunting for him and the missing diamonds.
This is a historical near romance as Esther (Alice Isaaz) a twin daughter has feelings for the grifter (Kevin Janssens). The film is slow moving and I don't understand what route they took out of Missouri to get passage to Paris. Seems like a lot of woods with no towns or cities along the way. Withe the money they has they could have taken a train or coach to Chicago or east. Very slow and boring.
Guide: No swearing, sex or nudity.

This is not really a review, it should be taken more as a collection of impressions of the film.
From my point of view, a fairly underrated film that manages to entertain by proposing different dynamics of the classic Western in a very beautiful way. The film is a very classic journey across half of America where we don't know who will survive and after various deaths and vicissitudes our valiant heroes grow up as people. The film is therefore very simple but still entertaining and adventurous and thanks to its fast pace it manages not to get bored despite the very very classic plot (perhaps a little too classic).

French Western?
gkhege8 May 2023
John Wayne, Randolph Scott and Clint Eastwood are screaming, " Say what?"
A bunch of women that have grand illusions of being sexy and tough all at once. The dresses they wear in the western scenes are completely out of place. All of them appear to have perfect teeth, something that would have been impossible for the time period. The hair styles would have never been possible for the wilderness location they were traveling. This is just a slow boring movie. I have been watching westerns for over 65 years and this is about as bad as it gets. The scenery and cinematography are well done but the actors come across as rich folks traveling on a dude Ranch cattle drive.
It was watch-able

Pointless and pretentious? Seriously?

As a matter of fact, this film is quiet the exact opposit: a delicate and raw masterpiece genuinely directed/photographed by a very gifted french director. And the actors are just perfect. One of the best movies by far from 2020. Not for everybody, especially not for pointless and pretentious fake profiles.
I recommend it.

Cool french Western about the spirit of freedom.

It's good to see that France still has plenty to offer on the topics of Love, Lust, Betrayal and Horrific Tragedy...
However, this is also a great Western about women liberating themselves from the constraints of American patriarchal society in the 19th century - including corsets.
So we also have an emancipation and empowerment theme in this very fine feminine film about freedom - which is a good thing, I think. Because French women should be free, I think - like the Mustang in the Wild West :)
