Love plot ruins an otherwise good movie
24 July 2022
If it wasn't for the love story sub plot, which was not only unnecessary but also just....not good, then I think this would be a solid 7. The acting was top notch and the writing was really good too, it just needed to focus on what the movie was about instead of a subplot that no one cares about and doesn't even end with a satisfying conclusion.

Taken and John Wick have a child
23 July 2022
I saw the 6.6 IMDb rating before I saw this movie and so I entered with tempered expectations, but by the end of the movie I couldn't believe how low that rating was. But at the same time I get it. The movie seems to be trying to walk a tightrope between the seriousness of Bourne but the extravagance of Wick, but by the end it's basically all Wick style action. So I get why people would be turned off by the absurdity of some of the action sequences.

That being said, guess what, I watch movies for entertainment and it had that in spades. If you're going into this expecting Bourne, you'll be disappointed. So that is me message and warning: expect Taken and John Wick, sit back and enjoy it. Is it relatively cliche? ...I guess so? It's a freaking action movie and it delivers. Just for comparison, I enjoyed Red Notice, but this is way better imo.

Ana DeArmas was amazing and I could easily see this pushing her into her own lead action role. The bad guys were genuinely bad, and they really were pissing me off, I can't remember the last movie that did that.

Disappointing
10 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I just finished the series. I'm still trying to figure out how I feel about it. Where did the magic in Star Wars go? At first I thought maybe I'm just getting old and the things about SW that made me fall in love as a kid were just because I was a kid. But the more I think about it, I really think it just comes down to poor writing. As an adult I admit I think about things that I probably wouldn't have as a kid. For instance, why does Vader just let Kenobi go when literally moments before we was racking him across the coals? Does the force not work through fire? Reva is trying to kill Vader... But she's killing innocent people in her pursuit? Then she decides to go kill Luke? Why?! (Never mind how in the world she survived or even got there) Why is Obi just letting himself get bossed around by a 10 year old with no life experience when he's the one who's supposed to be protecting her? Why did the writers put all these "climatic" moments where major characters "might be dead" when it's not climatic at all because, you know, we know they're in the future movies, so why even focus on those plot points? I feel like Disney just thinks they can put out anything as long as it has the SW name attached to it, regardless of quality. Who is the target demographic in this series?!?! That's one of my main questions. You have a stupid chase in a forest that might entertain a 6 year old, then you'll have a guy getting chopped in half. Disney, this is pathetic for how much money you have to put into this. Hire the BEST directors and writers and you'll probably have very happy fans who buy more merchandise and get their kids to fall in love with it too (since I know it's all about money anyway), at the rate you're going, you're doing nothing but losing lots of fans.

Without Excitement

Just like the TV series based on Tom Clancy and distributed by Amazon Prime, the writing is extremely bad, with a ho-hum plot. Absolutely nothing new or even exciting to see here; if you were hoping for a Tom Clancy thriller, cease to hope before watching.

I am a huge fan of Taylor Sheriden who has written so many great things, and I am so glad I didn't realize he wrote this until after I had already seen it, otherwise my expectations would have been sky high. Never in my wildest imagination would I have guessed that he wrote this consider the entire time through the movie I kept thinking how god awful the writing and dialog was. The main character is constantly talking to the audience (through a side character) to make sure that we are "caught up" with what is going on, over and over again, but the dialog doesn't even hide it well.

Overall, even writing aside, there just isn't a good movie here. It's very unfortunate what is happening, and i'm not even sure I know what, but I have no doubt this very low quality(plot wise, not production value)/low suspense movie will be "#1 on amazon Prime!" and tons of people will watch it and it will justify this horrible cycle of producing crap films with bad writing and poor plots. I think in the future I will look at reviews first to see if it's as bad as this one and just not watch it as my way to show the studio "stop making crap".

Entertaining, not scientific at all, standard "white males suck"
3 April 2020
The show is relatively entertaining, but you quickly see how science is in no way a part of this show. Quite frankly, it's just a show to push super PC ideologies. They take every chance they get to bash on the "white male". Like, they REALLY hate while males. I wish they would understand their ideological agendas would go so much further if they weren't so blindly extremely and, well, hateful.

So that's the bad, the good is that the humans themselves were actually pretty interesting and there are actually insights to get out of this, kind of like the placebo test. The contestant's make it pretty entertaining, the hosts make me want to fast forward through their parts.

One of the best sci-fi movies
19 March 2020
Wow. I was very pleasantly surprised. Everything about this movie, to me, was just about perfect. Great story. Really great ending. I loved everything about it. The action scenes were extremely well done and there was even a good amount of humor thrown in, but in a way that naturally fit and didn't feel forced like in Marvel (hey, i still love marvel movies too!). This felt like a foreign film in many ways because it doesn't have so many of the common cliche's that come out of hollywood, but that is what happens when your budget is crazy small and so you can take risks without having to worry about a 50+ Million flop.

If you're in the mood for a scifi movie or even just an action movie, WATCH THIS!!

Great Fun
19 March 2020
I'm really surprised this is rated lower than a 7; i will admit the plot is ridiculous and in real life this "game" would be shut down instantly, but this isn't real life- its a movie! I think some people need to understand that not every movie that takes place in the "real world" needs to be realistic. Anyway, this was a really fun, funny, and stylish movie! It felt like a graphic novel that came to life in movie form. I would somewhat compare it to Polar (the netflix movie - which is also based on a graphic novel) - though I probably liked this more than Polar overall.

If you're looking for a fun friday night popcorn flick, then give this a shot!

All Drama
8 March 2020
Here is what you need to know, if you're going to watch this movie because you want to see someone explore the jungle and find a lost civilization, then don't bother watching this. There is very, very little actual time spent in the jungle! It's mostly a slow drama that takes place in modern civilization outside of the jungle, which is pretty disappointing for a movie supposedly about an explorer who's going to EXPLORE the jungle. If you like period piece drama's, then maybe this movie is for you. However, be prepared to get hit over the head over and over again with how bad white people are, and in extremely take-you-out-of-the-moment fashion.

Why???????
7 March 2020
Season 1 was FANTASTIC! One of the most exciting scifi/cyberpunk shows I had ever seen! I was REALLY looking forward to season 2. I don't know what happened behind closed doors with the studio and producers, but they apparently every decision they made was the wrong one. Season 2 is nothing like season one, the entire atmosphere, the "feel" the show had, is gone.

Season 1 9/10 Season 2 Unwatchable

I dropped by rating to a 6 because I can't let people think my 9 rating could be referring to season 2 which is a 2/10.

My expectations were subverted
18 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is a really odd movie to review. On the one hand, I was on the edge of my seat the first half-ish of the movie - I was really into the plot and trying to "figure out" what the twist or payoff was going to be - only to find the second half to be mostly a disappointment. The main problem comes when it is revealed, half way into the movie, how/who the killer was and then the last half of the movie is just seeing the behind the scenes lead-up to that event and then the fallout.

The reason it was disappointing to me was because in this genre of movie/storytelling there is always a moment of "AH! it was so and so in the Library with the dagger" and this movie doesn't have that, at all. Which is odd, since this is the genre Johnson went with. Which, i'm sure, was precisely the genre he wanted. It's just a weird mix of a murder mystery drama but without the "guessing game" payoff.

It's like Rian went into this movie and said, "I know what you expect from this genre, and so i'm going to play off of that and not give you what you expect from this movie, which will make it really fresh and different!" Well, yes, you succeeded in making it different than other murder mysteries....but why? Now it's just a poorly done murder mystery.

Not bay's finest work
18 February 2020
First off, I am, generally speaking, a Michael Bay fan. I am not one of those people who leaves a Bay film complaining that there "wasn't a plot." Unlike those people, I know what type of movie I am in for: an action/comedy thin on plot and full of mindless explosions.

That being said, this just wasn't one of his best films. I felt like it was Michael Bay: Unhinged, as in, Netflix gave him 150 Million and were just like, "do whatever you want!", well, he decided to go even thinner on the plot and stuff even more explosions in. Now, this is what I was expecting in the movie, so I wasn't disappointed per se, but I do think it might have helped if a producer or a studio stepped into to at least slightly curb Bay going FULL Bay.

Reynolds was still good, the cast overall was good. I thought the parkour guy was about 10 years too late to have in a movie. I thought the graphic violence was unnecessary and added nothing to the movie, in fact I think it hurt the movie.

Overall, it's a decent popcorn flick that is worth watching as long as you know to expect.

Disappointing
27 December 2019
Finally after all these years, the end is here. I'm reminded of the last lines in T.S. Elliots poem: "It ended not with a bang, but a whimper."

I'm not old enough that I was able to see the originals when they first came out, but I am old enough that I was able to enjoy the prequels and the fanfare they brought to the theater. I remember when the Star Wars words appeared on the screen and the clapping and cheering that happened from the excitement of a new Star Wars movie. But now, over this last trilogy, the reception of this trilogy is perfectly told by the response of the fans in the theater. When TFA came out, there was cheering before and at the end of the movie. But, The Last Jedi, destroyed Star Wars. And finally on this film, what struck me, even though I was in a packed theater, was the lack of cheers when the STAR WARS text began scrolling, and then at the end of the film, when literally only two people clapped.

Unfortunately, Disney has killed Star Wars - or at least this trilogy. This movie itself is OK for what it had to deal with at the end of TLJ. However, to say there are "plot holes" is the understatement of the century. This movie is simply putting a bow on a crap trilogy, tying up loose ends. As a stand alone movie, it's just not exciting. Never once did I care about Rey or her rag tag alliance friends.

*Sigh* Be careful what you wish for, I guess.

Starts strong and fades fast
18 August 2019
The first episode is by far the best, and each episode then goes downhill and quickly! The first episode sets the stage and gets you pretty excited for a good conspiracy theory story - the problem, however, is that after the first episode makes a lot of claims, you then expect the future episodes to show the PROOF of said claims, except to actual hard proof or evidence is ever shown.

It's basically just a docuseries about a guy who really doesn't like christianity/religion in politics - which is fair enough - the problem though is that he sets the tone of this docuseries as if there is some seriously evil stuff that these Christian politicans are doing behind closed doors in a sort of secret society...except they never really do anything super evil - it's just standard politicians being politicians (adultery, bribes, etc)- no matter what religious affiliation they have.

He presents a lot of assumptions as if they are fact, and that is the main reason for my low score, but also because each episode was more boring than the previous.

Not what I expected but pleasantly surprised
16 June 2019
This isn't your average superhero series; when I think of superheros I think of lots of fighting and action, but this series actually has hardly any of that - and that isn't a bad thing, it was just unexpected. What is maybe even more unexpected is that DC actually devotes an entire season to basically just character development. This show is much more drama than action, but I really loved it and was pleasantly surprised. It is very quirky and fun. I highly recommend it. So far I have been very impressed with DC's streaming service shows.

An inside look at intelligence services
3 February 2019
Basically you get to watch old dudes who used to be in the Mossad intelligence service sit in a chair and reminisce on old jobs they partook in; personally, I find it highly entertaining because I love history and I love people telling personal stories.

I will also say it has a bit of a propaganda feel to it building up Mossad as an intelligence service. That doesn't really bother me but it could bother some other people I'm sure.

Overall, if you're a fan of history and spycraft then I highly recommend giving this a watch.

Good 90's movie fun
22 September 2018
I had just finished reading the book and so I went out and found this movie to watch. Without question, the movie stays very faithful to the book, even using a lot of the dialog and the voice over narration from the main character. If you've read the book and want to see an almost 1:1 copy into the visual format than this is the movie for you. It is great fun and its cool seeing Bale as a young kid and Heston turns in a great performance as Long John Silver! I definitely recommend watching this movie if you're in the mood for some nostalgia and a pirate adventure on a Friday night.

If you liked the first one, then you'll certainly like this one - not much is different, in terms of the tone of the movie and the style of comedy, which is of course a good thing. I also liked this one even more than the first one, but they are both great in their own ways. I can't wait to see the future movies in this series.

Decent mindless fun
4 September 2018
The movie starts off great, it really sucks you in right at the beginning and even manages to get the emotions flowing as you feel for the characters and the circumstances you find them in. The plot does really well until about half way through the movie and then it starts to muddle around and the pace slows down significantly and thus my emotional attachment to the characters. At the end of the day it is still a good film, just wish it was trimmed a bit and maybe remove about 15 minutes so it flows a bit better. The main love story is also about as cliche as it can possibly get, but I suppose that is somewhat expected with this genre.

Mediocre
4 September 2018
It's HBO so you know the acting and production value will be great; that aside, the movie doesn't really seem to know where it wants to go and what message it is trying to get across. Without a doubt, the entire situation is terrible with no happy endings - but even from an entertainment standpoint the pace was quite slow and muddled.

A Classic
4 September 2018
Well what is there to say? It's a classic. Even though I lived through the original airing of this show I never really got around to watching it. Even so, I knew the show was huge - it was everywhere in the culture. I finally decided to watch through the series. It didn't disappoint. What I liked best about the show was the way they managed to weave in emotional high points contrasted with low points in the lives of the characters. That is something that seems to be missing in most of the sitcoms of today - never any true low points in the lives of the characters to connect with them and cheer them on when they achieve the high points. Clearly, it's a show worth watching!

Jack Ryan (2018–2023)

From cliche to coincidence and back again
3 September 2018
First I want to say that I have never read a Tom Clancy book. I see a lot of bad ratings because they don't like how the characters were changed from book to screen - while that may or may not be fair - my review isn't coming from that angle at all. Also, I did watch the entire season, even though I kind of wanted to stop after ep 3.

I simply like compelling/entertaining shows! The spy/action/thriller genre is one of my favorites, so suffice it to say that I am very familiar with the genre.

I like to make my reviews on the shorter side, so I will get straight to the point: the *major* flaw this series has is using unbelievable cliche moments mixed in with waaaaaaay too many coincidences - and not just any coincidences - but specifically coincidences that *need to happen* in order for the plot to move forward.

I'm not even a writer, and even I know that plot driven coincidences are something you're supposed to avoid because it isn't creative and is simply unbelievable - and that is the tragedy with this series. Because it was Jack Ryan I was really looking forward to a "smarter" type of thriller. Not only does this show not make itself even slightly unique among this genre, but it almost feels as if it actively tried to be the most below par, average show the genre has ever seen by simply taking cliche after cliche.

There are so many things I could, and kind of want to call out as specific examples but I won't because I like to keep my reviews spoiler free for those who are genuinely trying to decide if they should watch the show or not.

Here is the bottom line: If you want an extremely bland, cliche, coincidence filled plot - but at least with high production value - then this is your show. If you hate those things in series, then you won't like this season.

p.s. I had no problem with John K as Jack Ryan - it wasn't his fault that it was bad, it was the writers.

Good but not great
23 July 2018
I definitely liked the first Equalizer....this one just didn't quite get it done as an entire body of work. The acting is great, and the action scenes are also very well done and quite slick, but I think one of the most disappointing things is that there isn't actually much action! Now, that is fine as long as the plot and the rest of the story is well done, but unfortunately it isn't. I never give away spoilers so I will simply say that the plot is nothing special, you pretty much see everything coming from a mile away and the bad guys have a real serious case of "plot stupidity" (they do really stupid things just to further the plot).

A movie that is very well done from a technical standpoint but fails the most on simply being fun/entertaining. It's not a terrible movie, probably worth a matinee showing, but I wouldn't spend full price to see it in a theater.

This is a hard pass for anyone not an Anderson fan.
12 July 2018
I'll take an entertaining movie over an artsy movie any day. Calling this movie "artsy" is the only way I can possibly conceive of this moving having such a high rating. I mean, I get it, the directors name is Wes Anderson and because of his big following it is going to instantly get great reviews. I admit that Anderson is a talented man - but I just don't get it with this movie. The movie looks great like all his other movies, but aside from that everything else is just *bad*.

There is no chemistry between the main characters - I was not convinced at all that they were actually falling in love. The other characters simply aren't very interesting or even likable. This movie should definitely not be labelled as a 'comedy' as there aren't even any funny parts in it. It is a dreadfully boring drama that aside form the usual visuals is entirely uninteresting.

Then there is the infamous beach scene. I actually felt disgusted as I watched that scene. I have no idea what Anderson was aiming for his viewers to get out of that scene - in any case, I guess he succeeded if his objective was awkwardness and felling sick.

The only people who will like this movie are die-hard fans of anderson who believe his **** doesn't stink and people who can't find it in themselves to honestly critique artsy indie films.

Pretty Solid
10 July 2018
I remembered seeing this movie back in the theater, and hadn't watched it since so I thought I would watch it again since I wanted to watch all the RE movies and hadn't seen the last few (or any after the second one). The movie holds up surprisingly well after all these years - I mean the overall tone of the movie is clearly dated - it *feels* like a late 90's movie - not that that is bad per se. The acting is mediocre, but I never really care too much about that anyway. I just rate stuff on if I am entertained or not and I can say that I was indeed with this movie. It also helps that it is about 90 minutes. I don't think this style of movie could go on for much more than that - the jarring soundtrack I think would get a little too over the top if I had to keep hearing it for another 30 minutes. Overall the movie still hold up and is entertaining all these years later. Still worth a watch.

A classic
9 July 2018
It's always interesting to watch a movie decades after it came out and then to write a review about it! This movie does an awful lot extremely well - the acting, the soundtrack, the cinematography - I can understand why it did so well it it's day and while it has held up till today - 50 years later. There are definitely a few times where you watch it and you can tell it feels a bit dated by some of the stuff that goes on and the plot is a little weak in some areas - but these are all forgivable things when you consider it came out 50 years ago and I think in some ways we have improved upon things in cinema over those 50 years; but there is no question that this film helped pave the way for many films to come. Definitely worth a watch if you still haven't seen it.
